How to Tell an Impact Crater from a Volcanic or Collapse Crater

How can you tell if you have found an impact crater? Start by treating a round depression as a candidate, not a diagnosis: impact, volcanic activity and collapse can all create roughly circular landforms. The strongest evidence for impact is not the outline but rocks or minerals bearing diagnostic shock effects, supported by geological context and other impact-related materials.

Why shape alone cannot identify a crater

A circular rim, basin or topographic anomaly can help locate a feature, but it cannot establish how the feature formed. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) lists glaciation, volcanism, sinkholes, atolls, salt domes, intrusions and hydrothermal explosions among processes that can produce crater-like forms. Volcanic maars and calderas can also look broadly circular from above.

NASA’s guide to finding impact structures describes circular or near-circular topography, unusual exposed bedrock with localized deformation or breccia, and circular gravity or magnetic anomalies as clues for finding candidates. These are exploration clues, not independent proof: a remote-sensing pattern needs geological evidence on the ground or in samples before it can support an origin.

What evidence most strongly supports an impact?

The Meteoritical Society Impact Cratering Committee’s 2026 recommendations emphasize diagnostic evidence in three categories: shock-metamorphic features formed under conditions experimentally shown to require hypervelocity impact; meteorites spatially and chronologically associated with the structure; and extraterrestrial elemental or isotopic signatures in associated melt rocks or breccias. These lines of evidence carry more weight than a circular outline. A chemical anomaly by itself is not conclusive unless it is tied to the structure and its geology.

  • Shock-metamorphosed rocks or minerals: Look for features whose formation requires the extreme pressures of hypervelocity impact. Their identification generally requires specialist examination.
  • Shatter cones: These distinctive fractured rocks can be diagnostic when correctly identified, but their absence does not rule out impact. A 1989 NASA technical report said shatter cones were associated with more than half of the roughly 120 impact structures known at that time; that historical figure is neither a current census nor a probability estimate for an unknown site (NASA Technical Reports Server, “Shatter cones: Diagnostic impact signatures”).
  • Impactites, breccias and melt rocks: These materials are meaningful when their textures, mineral effects and setting fit an impact process, rather than merely because broken or melted rock is present.
  • Associated extraterrestrial material: Meteorite fragments or geochemical signatures can strengthen the case when their spatial and chronological relationship to the structure is established.
  • Structural relationships: Deformation, uplift and the distribution of impact-related rocks can provide context that a surface outline cannot. At Utah’s Upheaval Dome, the impact interpretation is supported by mapped deformation, impactites, shatter features and shock-metamorphosed rocks considered together (USGS, “Structure and kinematics of a complex impact crater, Upheaval Dome, southeast Utah”).

Shatter cones are useful when present, but there is no single surface feature that every impact structure must preserve. Erosion, burial and later geological activity can alter or obscure evidence, so absence of a visible feature is not automatically evidence against impact.

What points to a volcanic crater or caldera?

Volcanic origin is supported by a relationship to a volcanic system and by volcanic rocks or deposits associated with eruptive activity. A crater may form through a relatively small evacuation of magma at shallow levels; a maar is an explosion crater associated with interaction between magma and groundwater. The USGS describes Zuni Salt Lake in New Mexico as a maar occupying a flat-floored crater (USGS, “Volcanoes: Other Volcanic Structures”).

A caldera is a different structure: it forms when the main magma chamber beneath a volcano is partly emptied and the overlying area collapses. The USGS explains the distinction between calderas and craters in its overview of volcanic landforms (USGS, “Caldera or crater…what’s the difference?”). A roughly circular depression may fit either a volcanic crater or a caldera at a glance; the surrounding volcanic context and the evidence for eruption or collapse matter more than the plan-view shape.

As the USGS puts it, “Fragments of meteorites or chemically detectable traces of extraterrestrial materials and indications of strong forces acting from above, rather than from below, distinguish impact from volcanic features” (USGS, “Volcanoes: Other Volcanic Structures”).

How to assess collapse and other crater-like features

“Collapse crater” is not one specific geological process. A caldera collapses above a partly evacuated magma chamber, while sinkholes and salt-dome-related processes can also produce crater-like depressions. For any suspected collapse feature, ask what material, chamber or soluble rock was removed or altered, and what evidence shows the overlying ground subsided. A circular depression alone does not answer either question.

Other alternatives matter too: glacial processes, intrusions and hydrothermal explosions can leave unusual circular or basin-like features. Regional geology can help distinguish these explanations from impact, but the relevant evidence depends on the local setting.

A practical workflow for a suspected impact site

  1. Describe before interpreting. Record the feature’s shape, dimensions, exposed rocks and surrounding terrain without labelling it an impact crater based on appearance.
  2. Check the regional geology. Consult geological maps and assess nearby volcanic deposits, vents, intrusions, collapse relationships and other plausible processes.
  3. Look for impact-diagnostic evidence. Seek specialist identification of shocked minerals or rocks, shatter cones, impact breccias or melts, associated meteorite material, and relevant extraterrestrial elemental or isotopic signatures.
  4. Separate candidate clues from proof. A circular topographic, gravity or magnetic anomaly may guide further investigation, but it is not diagnostic on its own.
  5. Get expert assessment for a serious candidate. Confirmation can involve petrographic or geochemical analysis as well as geological mapping. The USGS says it is not the ultimate authority on confirming impact craters and points readers to the University of New Brunswick Planetary and Space Science Centre for specialist help (USGS FAQ, “How can I tell if I have found an impact crater?”).

How the main evidence compares

Question Impact interpretation Volcanic or collapse interpretation
What materials or structures are most informative? Diagnostic shock effects, impact breccias or melts, associated meteorites, extraterrestrial geochemical signatures and supporting structural relationships. Volcanic rocks and deposits tied to eruptive activity, or structures and deposits consistent with collapse.
What process could form it? Hypervelocity impact into target rock. Magma eruption; magma–groundwater explosion in a maar; or subsidence after partial evacuation of a magma chamber in a caldera. Other collapse processes may also create crater-like forms.
What does a circular shape establish? It may help identify a candidate, but does not prove impact. It is also compatible with volcanic or collapse features and is not sufficient to establish either origin.
What raises confidence? Converging diagnostic evidence and expert confirmation. Converging volcanic products and regional context, or a supported collapse process and its geological relationships.
What can make interpretation difficult? Erosion, burial and later geological activity can obscure the original form and evidence. Erosion, burial, later eruptions and collapse can also obscure the original form and evidence.
