There is no dependable visual tell that proves game art was generated by AI. Strange fingers, unreadable lettering, repeated textures, or inconsistent lighting are useful reasons to investigate, but none is conclusive on its own. A reliable assessment combines the original file, comparisons with related assets, provenance records, narrowly interpreted detector results, and—when the claim matters—confirmation from the credited artist or developer.
This guide shows how to investigate without turning a hunch into an accusation. It also explains what Content Credentials can establish, why a detector’s not_detected result is limited, and how much confidence you should place in a quick visual judgment.

What you can—and cannot—conclude from appearance
Game art passes through many transformations before a player sees it. An original illustration may be resized, compressed into a texture, color-graded, composited into a trailer, or captured in a screenshot. Cropping and post-processing can remove details that would have helped you evaluate it; scaling and compression can create halos, jagged edges, or broken-looking text that were not present in the source.
Human artists also make revisions, use photo references, combine 3D renders with paint, and work within a team’s style guide. A deliberate stylization can look “wrong” according to photographic expectations, while a polished AI-assisted image can look entirely ordinary. Treat appearance as a collection of leads, not as a test with a yes-or-no answer.

The practical question is therefore not “Which single flaw proves AI?” It is “What independent evidence exists about this specific asset, and how strong is each piece?”
A five-step method for investigating a game image
- Establish what file you are actually examining. Start with the highest-quality, original asset available. Record whether it is a final in-game texture, concept art, a screenshot, a thumbnail, or a promotional image that may have been edited after export. Note the file type, dimensions, and any visible scaling or compression. A screenshot cannot answer questions that require the source file’s metadata, and a tiny thumbnail may hide the very details you want to inspect.
- Compare the asset with related work. Collect other images from the same game, character set, artist, or production period. Compare recurring characters, props, hands, faces, lettering, logos, repeating patterns, lighting direction, perspective, and the way small details are resolved. Look for whether a character’s costume hardware remains consistent, whether a weapon’s controls appear in the same places, and whether text follows the project’s established type treatment. A mismatch is a reason to gather more evidence; it is not a verdict, because teams change references, styles, and tools during production.
- Inspect provenance records. If the file carries Content Credentials, open the credential details rather than relying on a badge or icon. Identify the issuer, the claims about creation or editing, the time or software information that is actually present, and the asset to which the record is cryptographically bound. A signed record can document recorded actions, but it does not automatically describe every step in a workflow or certify that a person, rather than a model, made every mark.
- Use a detector only for the signals it supports. Read the tool’s documentation before interpreting an output. Check which models, watermarks, metadata formats, and file types it recognizes. Treat a positive supported signal as evidence that the signal was found, not as a complete reconstruction of authorship. Treat
not_detectedas “no supported signal was detected,” never as proof of human creation. - Seek direct confirmation when the consequence is significant. For a crediting dispute, takedown request, tournament rule, school assignment, or commercial claim, ask the credited artist or developer about the specific asset. Ask whether generative tools were used, which portions were assisted, and whether the image was later painted, modeled, or composited by people. Keep the question about the asset and workflow; do not infer a person’s identity, prompt, account, or intent from an automated score.
How to preserve useful evidence
Save the original file without re-exporting it, and keep a copy of the version you inspected. Record where it came from, when you downloaded it, and any transformation that occurred before you saw it. If you are comparing images, keep the same zoom level and color-management conditions where possible. This simple chain of custody helps separate a property of the asset from an artifact introduced by a social platform, game engine, or image editor.
Visual clues worth checking
Visual inspection is most useful when it is systematic. Examine several categories and write down what you observe before deciding what it means.

Look at hands, fingers, teeth, ears, straps, buckles, weapon grips, jewelry, and places where one object passes behind another. Generated images can contain locally plausible parts that fail to connect globally: a strap may disappear into clothing, a hand may not wrap around a handle, or a row of buttons may change count. However, a human sketch, an intentionally exaggerated character, a low-resolution texture, or a rushed production asset can show similar problems.

Lettering and symbols
Read every sign, label, menu item, and logo at full resolution. Garbled letterforms, inconsistent kerning, and symbols that change between repeated instances deserve a closer look. They can also result from a deliberately fictional alphabet, a texture baked at too low a resolution, a localization pass, or motion blur in a screenshot. Verify the source before treating unreadable text as evidence of generation.
Repetition and patterns
Check brickwork, foliage, fabric, crowds, stars, particles, and other repeated elements. Accidental near-duplicates, abruptly changing motifs, or patterns that do not follow the surface’s perspective can indicate a synthetic or composited layer. Texture artists and level designers also tile materials intentionally, and post-processing can smear a pattern, so compare the same material elsewhere in the game.
Lighting, perspective, and shadows
Trace the direction of key lights and cast shadows. Check whether reflections agree with the objects that should produce them, whether parallel lines converge consistently, and whether atmospheric perspective matches depth. A concept image may combine painted and rendered elements by design; a game screenshot may contain multiple real-time lights, bloom, depth of field, and temporal artifacts. An inconsistency narrows the questions you should ask, but it does not identify the tool that produced the image.

Edges, materials, and small-scale detail
Zoom in on hair, fur, foliage, thin cables, translucent materials, and silhouettes against the background. Look for edge chatter, melted fine detail, or a surface whose texture scale changes unexpectedly. Compression, sharpening, antialiasing, and an engine’s mipmapping can produce each of these effects. Compare an uncompressed export or another view of the same asset before drawing a conclusion.

What Content Credentials can tell you
Content Credentials are based on the C2PA standard. A credential is a manifest containing assertions about an asset, wrapped in a digitally signed claim and bound to the content. The signature lets a verifier check whether the recorded assertions are associated with that file and whether the record has been altered. The C2PA Technical Specification, version 2.4 describes this as provenance and a trust signal for evaluating an asset.
Read the issuer and each assertion separately. A record might describe an application that exported the file, an edit that occurred after capture, or a declared creation event. Those statements are only as specific as the issuer made them. A credential attached to a final composite may not reveal the source layers, an unrecorded offline step, or work done before the credential was created. Check that the record is bound to the exact asset you are assessing, not to a visually similar image or an earlier version.
The standard deliberately avoids declaring an asset good, bad, authentic, or human-made. As the C2PA Technical Specification puts it: “C2PA specifications SHOULD NOT provide value judgments about whether a given set of provenance data is ‘good’ or ‘bad,’ merely whether the assertions included within can be validated as associated with the underlying asset, correctly formed, and free from tampering.” A valid credential therefore gives you a documented account to interpret; it is not a universal judgment about artistic merit or the complete production story.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →What the absence of a credential means
Many legitimate files have no Content Credentials. Metadata can be stripped when an image is edited, converted, uploaded, or shared, and older assets may have been created before a provenance system was available. Missing credentials tell you that no record is available in the copy you possess—not that a human made the image and not that an AI system made it.

How to interpret AI-image detectors
Detectors differ in what they inspect. Some classify pixels against patterns associated with particular models; others look for a known watermark or metadata record. A tool may support only certain model families, image types, or signal versions. Transformations such as resizing, recompression, cropping, color changes, or screenshots can weaken or remove the evidence it expects.
OpenAI’s Content Provenance documentation describes an API that checks images for C2PA Content Credentials and images or audio for supported SynthID watermarks. The documentation states that it is not a general-purpose detector and does not detect every company’s AI output. Its not_detected result means that supported evidence was not found; it does not establish human authorship. Verify the original file whenever possible, because editing and sharing can strip metadata or degrade a watermark.
| Approach | Evidence examined | What a positive result can support | What it cannot establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| Visual inspection | Pixels, anatomy, text, repetition, lighting, perspective, and material detail | A reason to investigate a particular feature or compare related assets | The generating tool, the person who used it, or authorship from one anomaly |
| Signed provenance | Cryptographically bound C2PA assertions and issuer information | That recorded claims are associated with the file and have not been tampered with | That the entire workflow was recorded, that every mark was made by a human, or that the art is truthful or valuable |
| Signal detector | Supported watermarks, metadata, or model-specific image patterns | That the detector found a signal within its documented scope | Use of unsupported systems, evidence removed by transformation, or a complete authorship history |
| Artist or developer confirmation | A first-party account of the specific asset and workflow | Context about tools, revisions, and which portions were assisted | Independent proof when the account cannot be authenticated or corroborated |
Use these approaches as complementary evidence. Do not average their outputs into a made-up probability: they inspect different things and can fail for different reasons.
What research says about quick human judgments
A 2025 CHI experiment by Kamali, Nakamura, Kumar, Chatzimparmpas, Hullman, and Groh tested people’s ability to distinguish diffusion-model-generated photographs from real photographs. It collected 749,828 observations from 50,444 participants, using 450 generated images and 149 real images. Participants identified a generated image with 72% accuracy after a one-second glance. Accuracy rose by five percentage points after four additional seconds and by ten points when viewing time was unlimited.
Best Value
Those figures illustrate why a fast visual impression is fragile, but they are not a performance rate for game-art detection. The experiment used photographs rather than game assets or game-art pipelines, and its results were affected by scene complexity, artifact type, display time, and human curation. Do not quote the percentages as evidence that people can identify a game texture or concept painting with the same accuracy.
Applying the method to common situations
A screenshot shared on social media
Ask for the original export or an in-game capture at native resolution. A screenshot may include scaling, platform compression, UI overlays, and color changes. Compare the character, props, and environment with other official images from the same build. If no original file or provenance record is available, report the uncertainty rather than labeling the art.
A concept-art image in a portfolio
Inspect the highest-resolution version and look for a credential. Compare its typography, brushwork, anatomy, and design language with other pieces credited to the same project. Contact the artist with a specific, neutral question about whether generative tools contributed to the image and which parts were later edited. A detector score alone is not a substitute for that conversation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA disputed asset in a commercial release
Preserve the shipped file and its surrounding documentation. Check credentials and issuer claims, compare the asset with source-control or art-bible references if the developer can share them, and ask for a workflow statement from the responsible team. Separate three questions: whether a supported AI signal is present, whether the asset violates a particular contract or policy, and who should receive credit. They require different evidence.
An asset pack or marketplace image
Review the license, creator attribution, update history, and any available provenance before buying or importing it. Request the original files and a statement about AI assistance if your project has disclosure or training-data rules. Do not infer licensing status from visual appearance; an image can look hand-painted and still have contractual restrictions, or look synthetic and still be entirely permissible under the relevant license.
A practical evidence checklist
- Do you have the original file rather than a thumbnail or recompressed screenshot?
- Have you identified every edit, crop, scale change, or export that occurred before inspection?
- Did you compare related characters, props, text, patterns, lighting, and perspective?
- Did you record specific observations instead of relying on a general impression?
- Did you inspect the issuer and claims in any C2PA credential and confirm they bind to this file?
- Does the detector document support for this model family, watermark, metadata format, and file type?
- Are you interpreting
not_detectedas absence of a supported signal rather than proof of human work? - For a consequential claim, did you ask the credited artist or developer about this exact asset?
- Can you distinguish an authorship question from a policy, contract, credit, or licensing question?
If several independent lines of evidence agree, you can make a more carefully qualified statement such as “the file carries a signed record asserting X” or “the creator says Y about the workflow.” If the evidence consists only of visual oddities or a negative detector result, the responsible conclusion is that authorship remains unverified.
