How to Tell a Small Raptor Bite Mark From Damage Caused by Other Animals

First, identify what was injured. The evidence summarized here applies to marks on bone and other prey remains, not to a fresh wound on living skin. On bone, no single pit, puncture or scratch can reliably identify a small raptor. A defensible assessment combines the mark’s shape and penetration with its position, digestion or other surface alteration, the skeletal parts that survived, prey size and the way the remains were deposited.

That combination can support raptor involvement, but it usually cannot identify a species from one mark. Other predators, scavengers and environmental processes can produce overlapping traces.

Bone marks and skin wounds are different questions

Taphonomy—the study of what happens to remains after death—can help interpret marks on bones. It cannot turn a puncture on a person or living animal into a reliable species identification. A fresh injury may need medical treatment, rabies or wildlife advice, and documentation by a qualified clinician or animal-control professional. Do not press bone-mark criteria into service as a diagnosis of a living wound.

For a bone or prey assemblage, the useful question is not “Does this one hole look like a raptor?” It is “Does the entire pattern fit raptor feeding better than the plausible alternatives?” That requires recording observations before assigning an agent.

What evidence can support raptor involvement?

Raptor feeding may leave several kinds of traces. Analysts compare them as a group rather than treating any one class as a fingerprint.

Evidence axis What to record Why it helps—and its limit
Mark morphology Pits, punctures, scores and furrows; outline, orientation, spacing and whether the outer cortex is penetrated Describes the trace precisely, but different animals and processes can make similar forms. Morphology alone does not identify a species.
Position Bone end or shaft; proximal or distal end; wing, leg or another element Feeding mechanics and the parts handled may influence location. Distributions are assemblage-specific, not universal rules.
Surface alteration Digestive rounding, pitting, scratching, beak or claw marks and edge modification Can reveal passage through a digestive tract or handling, but intensity depends on feeding stage and the bone element.
Skeletal representation Which elements are present, whether paired parts remain, how connected the skeleton was and how fragmented it is Shows what happened to the prey after capture. A single raptor can create different accumulations under different conditions.
Context Prey type and size, likely predator community, site, sediment and deposition history Provides the comparison set. Prey size and other agents can bias which bones survive and which marks are visible.

A step-by-step method for examining a bone

1. Preserve the context before handling

Photograph the item in place, including a scale, and note the location, date, substrate, associated bones, feathers, scat or pellets and any obvious disturbance. Keep a record of whether the element was exposed, buried, water-rolled or moved. A mark separated from its depositional setting loses much of its interpretive value.

2. Identify the bone and its anatomy

Determine the skeletal element as far as possible and mark its orientation. Record whether the trace lies on a shaft, a proximal end or a distal end, and whether it is on a wing, leg or another part of the skeleton. The same puncture has a different meaning on a thin bone end than on a thick shaft.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Describe the mark without naming an animal

Use neutral terms first: pit, puncture, score or furrow. Note whether the mark is round, elongated, V-shaped, paired, clustered or associated with a crack. Record its dimensions with a scale and describe raised edges, crushing, flaking or a channel leading away from the opening. Avoid labels such as “eagle hole” until the rest of the evidence has been assessed.

4. Check whether the cortex is penetrated

Distinguish a superficial score from a true perforation. A perforation passes through the outer cortical surface; a shallow impression does not. Look at both sides when possible. Penetration is a useful observation, but it is not a species test: claws, beaks, teeth, trampling and other forces can all produce penetrating damage in suitable bone.

5. Map repeated marks

One mark is weak evidence. Several traces with consistent orientation, spacing or location are more informative, especially if they occur on comparable elements. Still, repeated marks can reflect repeated handling by different agents or post-depositional breakage. Record every mark rather than selecting only the most dramatic example.

6. Examine digestion and surface change

Digestive alteration may include rounding, pitting and a chemically softened appearance. Record how much of the surface is affected and whether the change is concentrated on exposed edges or spread across the element. Feeding stage matters: prey that is swallowed, regurgitated or partly consumed can produce different degrees of alteration. Digestion damage supports a processing history; by itself it does not identify which raptor was involved.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Assess breakage and skeletal representation

List the elements present and absent, note whether they remain articulated or paired, and classify fragmentation. A concentration of selected parts can result from how prey was carried, eaten, regurgitated or deposited. Missing bones are not automatically evidence of a raptor; carnivores, people, rodents, weather and sediment can remove or destroy the same elements.

8. Compare plausible alternatives

Consider other birds, mammals, reptiles, humans, trampling, weathering and sediment movement. Compare the complete pattern: mark shape, penetration, location, digestion, fractures, element representation and site history. The correct conclusion may be “animal modification is present, but the agent is unresolved.” That is more defensible than forcing a species assignment.

9. State confidence and uncertainty separately

Write down which observations are direct and which are interpretations. For example, “three perforations on proximal wing bones” is an observation; “raptor feeding is consistent with the pattern” is an interpretation. Keep alternative explanations visible, especially when only one bone or one mark is available.

What documented assemblages actually show

Sarakenos Cave, Greece: a location pattern, not a universal signature

The 2018 study of the Sarakenos Cave avian assemblage found perforations attributed to raptor claws and/or beaks on an average of 5% of remains across the taxa, bones and periods examined. Of those perforations, 51% were on proximal ends, and wing elements had higher perforation percentages than leg elements.

Those percentages describe that archaeological assemblage only. They do not mean that half of all raptor perforations occur near bone ends, that wings are always targeted, or that a bone with a proximal hole must have been handled by a raptor. The figures are useful as a comparison when the prey, site and preservation history are similar.

Oliva Mountain: one owl, several accumulation patterns

A 2025 study examined 273 avian remains from three nearby assemblages associated with the Eurasian eagle-owl (Bubo bubo) at Oliva Mountain in Tarragona, Spain. The assemblages differed in prey representation, consumption stage and bone modifications. The finding matters because it demonstrates that even one raptor species can leave substantially different traces when prey and feeding conditions change.

In the Pine Grove assemblage discussed in that study, 78% of remains showed digestion damage, with a range of digestion intensities. That is a local result, not a general rate for owl prey. It illustrates why “digested” should be recorded as a degree and pattern, not used as a yes-or-no owl identifier.

Crowned hawk-eagle predation on monkeys: a different predator-prey setting

A 2003 study of crowned hawk-eagle predation on monkeys described numerous nicks, punctures and “can-opener” perforations on thin bones, along with raking or shattering of scapular blades. Many long bones remained whole or minimally damaged. This is a documented pattern for that predator and prey context. It is not a diagnostic template for small raptors or for bird remains.

Why comparisons with other trace studies need care

Studies of non-raptor traces, including work on theropod bite marks, use classes such as pits, scores and punctures to describe damage. Those classes communicate shape and penetration; they do not automatically name the maker. Prey size, bone anatomy and environmental alteration can make unlike agents look alike. A 2023 study on prey body size likewise warns that the size of the prey can bias which bones are represented in assemblages made by humans and birds.

Why a single puncture is not enough

  • Shape overlaps. A pit or puncture records contact with bone, not a unique beak, claw or tooth.
  • Bone anatomy changes the trace. Thin ends can perforate while thick shafts crush, crack or resist penetration.
  • Feeding stage changes the assemblage. A partly eaten carcass, a swallowed item and a regurgitated pellet may preserve different parts and surface conditions.
  • Prey size changes what survives. Small and large prey do not produce equivalent skeletal samples, and selective transport or consumption can remove the elements you expected to see.
  • Post-depositional processes imitate feeding damage. Trampling, weathering, sediment movement and other animals can add scratches, pits or breaks after the original event.

Species-level identification generally requires a well-documented assemblage, comparative reference material and specialist analysis. A hand lens and a photograph can support documentation, but they cannot convert an isolated mark into a validated species diagnosis.

How to compare raptors with other possible agents

Use a comparison matrix rather than a checklist that assigns one mark to one animal.

Question If the pattern fits raptor handling What could still confound it
Are there perforations? Repeated perforations may be compatible with beak or claw contact. Other predators and mechanical damage can penetrate bone.
Where are they? A concentration on particular elements or ends may reflect how prey was handled. Position frequencies vary by assemblage and by which bones survived.
Is there digestion? Rounding, pitting or other chemical alteration may indicate passage through digestion. Weathering and surface chemistry can produce similar-looking alteration.
What is missing? Selective skeletal representation can reflect transport, consumption or regurgitation. Scavengers, people, rodents and sediment can also remove or destroy elements.
Does the site make ecological sense? Local raptor presence, prey type and a compatible deposition setting strengthen the interpretation. Presence of a raptor does not prove it made a particular mark.

A practical recording sheet

For each specimen, record the following in a consistent order:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Specimen number, location and photographs with scale.
  2. Bone identification, side and anatomical position.
  3. Number, type and dimensions of marks.
  4. Whether each mark penetrates the cortex.
  5. Associated crushing, cracking, scores, furrows or edge loss.
  6. Digestive alteration and its intensity across the surface.
  7. Element completeness, articulation, pairing and fragmentation.
  8. Prey-size estimate and other animals or physical processes present at the site.
  9. Most plausible agent, alternative agents and the observations supporting each.
  10. Confidence level: high only when multiple independent lines of evidence agree; otherwise report the uncertainty.

This format prevents confirmation bias. It also gives a zooarchaeologist, forensic taphonomist or archaeologist enough information to reassess the interpretation.

When the specimen may be archaeological or fossil

Do not clean, drill, paint or chemically treat a potentially archaeological or fossil bone before consultation. Modification can erase microscopic evidence and damage the context that makes the pattern interpretable. Keep the specimen dry unless a qualified curator gives different instructions, and preserve photographs and location notes with it.

For readers who want a broader technical treatment of animal modification of remains, the Manual of Forensic Taphonomy, Second Edition appears in a 2021 Smithsonian Institution Repository record. It is reference material, not a field kit or a standalone diagnostic test.

If the mark is on living skin

Bone taphonomy cannot identify a bite on living skin. Skin wounds change as swelling, bleeding, infection and healing progress, and the relevant evidence includes medical examination, photographs, the circumstances of the event and, where appropriate, wildlife or public-health assessment. Seek urgent care for deep punctures, uncontrolled bleeding, loss of function, facial or hand injuries, or any concern about infection or rabies exposure. Do not delay treatment while trying to match the wound to a bird’s beak or claw.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom line for an isolated find

An isolated puncture or scratch is compatible with many agents. Raptor involvement becomes more credible when a coherent assemblage combines compatible marks, penetration, anatomical distribution, digestion or handling damage, skeletal representation, prey ecology and deposition context. Even then, the responsible result may be “consistent with raptor modification” rather than a named small-raptor species.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the shape of one hole identify the raptor species?

No. Pits, punctures, scores and furrows can overlap among birds, mammals, reptiles and non-animal processes. Species attribution requires a broader, documented pattern and suitable comparative expertise.

Does a proximal hole prove a raptor made it?

No. In the Sarakenos Cave assemblage, 51% of raptor-attributed perforations were on proximal ends, but that percentage is specific to that assemblage and cannot be used as a universal rule.

What does the 5% figure from Sarakenos Cave mean?

It was the average share of remains with perforations attributed to raptor claws and/or beaks in the taxa, bones and periods studied there in 2018. It is not a general raptor rate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does digestion damage prove an owl was responsible?

No. Digestion supports a processing history, but its appearance varies with feeding stage, bone element and preservation. The 78% digestion figure reported for Pine Grove applies only to that local assemblage.

Can these criteria identify an animal that bit a person?

No. The evidence concerns bone and prey remains. A fresh skin wound needs medical and, when relevant, wildlife or public-health assessment rather than taphonomic species matching.
