“What is that bright light in the southwest?” Start with evidence, not a label. Record the exact time, place, direction, motion and lights, then compare the sighting with a planetarium view and satellite-pass predictions. Only after those checks should you weigh aircraft, drone or other explanations. If no explanation fits the available evidence, unidentified is the accurate conclusion—it is not proof of an extraordinary origin.
What to do the moment you see an unusual light
Human memory quickly smooths out timing, direction and movement. Write down the observation while it is fresh, even if you are still watching. Use your phone’s notes app, a paper notebook or a voice memo, then preserve the original photo or video file rather than relying on a compressed social-media copy.

Record the essential facts
- Date and local time: include the time zone and, if possible, the exact minute and second when the object appeared and disappeared.
- Location: note the town or coordinates and where you were standing. A rooftop, valley or open field can change what part of the horizon was visible.
- Direction: estimate a compass bearing such as southwest, and note nearby landmarks. Record whether the object moved north, south, east or west.
- Elevation: estimate how high it was above the horizon. “Two fist-widths above the horizon” is more useful than simply saying “low.”
- Duration and path: write the total visible time, how long it took to cross a particular part of the sky, and whether it followed a straight or curved path.
- Appearance: describe steady or flashing light, colors, trails, changes in brightness, apparent shape and whether it split apart.
- Sound and witnesses: note engine noise, a delay between seeing and hearing anything, other observers and whether anyone captured video.
Do not infer distance, size or speed from brightness. The National Jersey Astronomical Association (NJAA) notes that a dark sky provides few reliable depth cues, so a nearby drone can look slow and a distant aircraft can look stationary.
First check: could it be a planet or star?
Before separating satellites from aircraft, reproduce the sky for the exact place and time. Enter your location, date and time into a planetarium program such as Stellarium, then compare the displayed horizon with your notes. Match the object’s compass direction and approximate elevation, not just its general brightness.

NASA’s night-sky guidance specifically warns that Venus, Sirius, Jupiter and Mercury are often mistaken for UFOs. A bright planet low in the sky can shimmer through turbulent air and seem to change color. A star usually holds the same position relative to nearby stars during a short observation, although atmospheric scintillation can make it flicker.
A planet or star is a strong candidate when the light remains fixed against the star field while you change your viewing position or watch for several minutes. That test is not conclusive by itself: an approaching aircraft can also appear nearly fixed, and a satellite may move too slowly to notice during a brief glance. Use the planetarium match together with the time and direction record.
Why distance and darkness create convincing illusions
A clear, dark sky can make a point of light look close even when it is far away. With no nearby object for scale, the eye has difficulty judging the object’s actual size, altitude or speed. A large aircraft far off may appear to crawl, while a small drone near a roofline may seem to dart. Apparent hovering can also result when an aircraft is flying almost directly toward you.
Clouds add another layer of uncertainty. A light behind a thin cloud can dim, spread or change color, and moving cloud layers can make a fixed light seem to travel. If the motion is visible only in a recording, compare it with the naked-eye view: autofocus, digital stabilization, lens flare and internal reflections can create movement or extra points of light that were not in the sky.
How to recognize a satellite
Typical movement and light
A visible satellite generally appears as a point of light traveling smoothly and steadily across the sky. It normally does not make abrupt turns, stop, hover or reverse direction. Many satellites show a constant, non-blinking glow rather than aircraft-style navigation flashes. A satellite can fade or flare, however, when its reflective surfaces change angle or when it enters Earth’s shadow; a flash therefore does not automatically rule out an orbiting object.
Verify with a pass prediction
- Open a location-based satellite service such as Heavens-Above and set the observing location accurately.
- Enter the local date and time from your observation record. Check the time zone and daylight-saving setting.
- Compare the predicted rise direction, highest point, set direction and brightness with what you saw.
- For a very bright pass, check NASA’s Spot the Station schedule for International Space Station visibility.
A close line of lights may be a group of recently launched Starlink satellites. Newly deployed spacecraft can travel in a compact train before orbital spacing increases. The line can therefore look unlike a familiar single satellite while still following a smooth, common path.
The International Space Station can be exceptionally bright and may take several minutes to cross the sky. Its brightness and duration make it a frequent source of “bright light” reports, so the pass time and track are more informative than brightness alone.

Satellite clues that can mislead
Rotation or tumbling can make a satellite brighten and fade in pulses. A camera may exaggerate those changes through automatic exposure, focus hunting or digital sharpening. Compare the original recording with the naked-eye description, and do not call a flashing object an aircraft solely because it flashed.
How to recognize an aircraft
Lights and approach geometry
Red, green or white blinking lights are reasons to consider an aircraft. Navigation, landing and anti-collision lights can produce several points of light that belong to one vehicle. Colors are clues, not a remote identification test: distance, haze and camera sensors can alter them.
An aircraft flying almost directly toward you can show very little sideways motion. Its apparent position may remain nearly fixed until it passes, then shift quickly. This “stationary” phase is a common reason people reject an aircraft explanation. Record the change in bearing over time rather than deciding from the first few seconds.
Use motion and sound together
Listen for an engine, but account for the delay between light and sound. Wind, buildings and altitude can hide or distort noise, so silence does not prove that no aircraft was present. If several lights maintain a rigid arrangement while moving along a predictable route, treat them as one aircraft until other evidence suggests otherwise.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchAir-traffic tracking can sometimes help, but a missing public track is not proof that the object was not an aircraft. Small planes, helicopters, military flights and gaps in coverage can limit what a public service displays. The observation record remains the primary evidence.
How to recognize a drone
Drones operate near the observer, so they can appear to hover, accelerate, stop, move sideways or change direction. Several lights may be visible, and their arrangement can change as the craft turns. Those behaviors are reasons to consider a drone or nearby aircraft, not definitive proof of either.
Distance is the major trap. A faraway aircraft can seem to hover, while a nearby drone can look unusually bright and fast. Estimate movement against fixed references such as a roofline or tree, and note how the apparent size changes. A light that repeatedly returns to one spot may be circling, holding position or being viewed through moving clouds.

Do not approach, shine lasers, throw objects or attempt to interfere with a drone. If it appears to threaten people, property or public safety, move to a safe location and document the time, direction and behavior from there.
Satellite, aircraft and drone: practical comparison
| Observation | Satellite | Aircraft | Drone |
|---|---|---|---|
| Typical apparent movement | Smooth, steady path across the sky | May seem stationary while approaching, then move relative to the observer | Can appear to hover or change direction because it is nearby |
| Lights | Often steady; many visible satellites do not blink; brightness can vary or flash | Red, green or white blinking navigation and anti-collision lights may be visible | May have multiple lights; appearance varies |
| Pattern | A group shortly after launch can form a line or train | Several lights may belong to one aircraft | Multiple lights or direction changes can be suggestive, not definitive |
| Best verification | Match a location-based satellite prediction and exact time | Compare light pattern and motion while allowing for approach geometry | Record behavior and use the appropriate safety-reporting path when needed |
These are observational tendencies described by NJAA, not a test that identifies an object from one color or movement cue. Atmospheric conditions, viewing angle and camera artifacts can make different objects look alike.
A complete identification workflow
1. Preserve the original evidence
Save the unedited photo or video, including its metadata when available. Write down what you saw without replacing observations with interpretations: “three white points, one red flash every few seconds” is better than “a triangular craft.” Ask each witness to make an independent note before comparing accounts.
2. Recreate the sky
Use a planetarium view for the location and timestamp. Check bright planets and stars first, then look for the same object at the same elevation. If the remembered direction is uncertain, test a small range rather than forcing a match.
3. Check satellite passes
Run the same timestamp through a pass-prediction service. Compare the predicted track, visibility period and brightness with your record. Check the International Space Station separately when the sighting was unusually bright or lasted several minutes.

Describe the movement relative to fixed landmarks. Ask whether the lights blinked in a repeating pattern, whether their spacing stayed constant, whether the object hovered or turned, and whether sound was present. Keep “consistent with” language; a single clue cannot establish vehicle type.
5. Test other explanations
NASA lists rocket launches, comets, military jets, weather balloons, sounding rockets, satellites, meteors and fireballs, experimental craft, lenticular clouds and lens flare or optical aberration among phenomena that can be confused with UFOs. NJAA offers several useful timing clues:

- The beginner telescope adopts an adjustable aluminum alloy tripod, which can be freely adjusted from 12 inches to 38 inches to achieve different observation positions. Installation is very simple and does not require additional tools.
- The perfect gift for astronomy beginners and children. Put it at home to see the moon, or take this travel telescope on the road to see the scenery. Enjoy various family happy moments around this cool technology gift. And provide timely service to customers, answering any questions about telescopes.
- A fast streak lasting about one or two seconds is consistent with a meteor; an unusually bright one may be a fireball.
- Multiple glowing fragments moving together for longer can indicate a spacecraft reentry.
- A large glowing cloud or spiral can occur during a rocket launch.
- Cloud layers can reflect city lights or moonlight and create an apparent moving object.
- Lens flare, internal reflections and autofocus artifacts can appear only in a recording, not in the sky itself.
These are diagnostic possibilities, not guarantees. Weather records, launch notices and a second recording can strengthen or weaken a hypothesis.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What “UFO” or “unidentified” actually means
UFO simply describes an observed object that has not been identified from the available information. It does not establish extraterrestrial origin, secret technology or any other extraordinary explanation. The honest standard is proportional to the evidence: identify the object when a time-and-position match is strong, describe competing possibilities when evidence is incomplete, and retain “unidentified” when no explanation can be supported confidently.
NASA’s 2013 guidance encourages sharing a careful record with a local astronomy club or experienced observer. Include the original files, exact time, location, direction, duration, brightness changes and apparent speed. A patient review is more useful than a dramatic label, especially when witnesses remember the same event differently.
When and how to report a safety concern in the United States
Reporting depends on what you observed and whether anyone may be in danger. These pathways apply to U.S. readers; other countries use different authorities.
Immediate danger or suspected crime
If a drone or other aircraft appears to endanger people or property, or seems connected to a crime, contact local law enforcement first. Give the dispatcher the current location, direction of travel, time, altitude estimate, behavior and any safe-to-share media. Do not pursue the operator or put yourself in danger.
Suspected drone-rule violation
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) directs witnesses to report an apparently rule-violating drone to the local FAA Flight Standards District Office. A useful report states what happened, when and where it happened, how the aircraft was operated, and why the activity appeared unsafe or unlawful.

The FAA Aeronautical Information Manual directs people who want to report unexplained phenomena to the All-Domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO). Its guidance also says that if life or property might be endangered, the activity should be reported to local law enforcement. These channels do not replace emergency services.

If the object is still visible: an optional telescope check
A beginner telescope can reveal detail only while the object remains in view and the observer is present. NASA’s guidance presents a telescope as an optional aid, not a way to identify a sighting from a past memory or a shaky recording. First complete the free time-and-position checks; then, if the object is still visible, use a stable mount, low magnification and a wide field of view. Keep recording what the telescope actually shows rather than assuming magnification will resolve every mystery.
Bottom line
Start with a timestamped observation record, then match the sky, satellite passes and behavior in that order. Smooth travel and a prediction match favor a satellite; blinking navigation lights and approach geometry favor an aircraft; hovering or abrupt nearby maneuvers make a drone worth considering. None of those cues is conclusive alone. When the evidence runs out, “unidentified” is a precise answer—and a reason to gather better data, not to claim more than the sighting shows.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a satellite flash like an aircraft?
Yes. A rotating or tumbling satellite can briefly reflect sunlight and brighten or fade in pulses. A flash alone does not establish that the object was an aircraft; compare its smooth path and timing with a location-based satellite prediction.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Why did the object appear to stop?
An aircraft flying nearly toward you can show little sideways movement, and a distant object has few depth cues in a dark sky. A nearby drone can genuinely hover. Record movement against fixed landmarks before deciding which explanation fits.
How can I check whether Venus or another planet was the light?
Enter your location, date and exact time into a planetarium such as Stellarium. Compare the displayed horizon, compass direction and elevation with your notes. NASA specifically identifies Venus, Sirius, Jupiter and Mercury as frequent sources of mistaken UFO reports.
What does a line of lights mean?
Recently launched Starlink satellites can travel in a close, smooth train before spreading apart. Several lights may also belong to one aircraft. Check whether the lights keep a rigid arrangement and whether a satellite pass prediction matches the time and track.
What should I do if a drone seems dangerous?
Move to safety and document the time, location, direction, altitude estimate and behavior from a safe distance. In the United States, contact local law enforcement for an immediate danger or suspected crime; suspected rule violations can be reported to the local FAA Flight Standards District Office.
Recommended Free Tools
Can a telescope identify something I saw yesterday?
No. NASA’s guidance treats a telescope as useful only while the object is still visible and you are observing it. For a past sighting, preserve the original files and use the timestamp, location, sky chart and satellite-pass checks instead.
