Start from a manufacturer’s known official domain or a bookmark, inspect the complete hostname, and download wallet software only through the vendor’s own site. Never enter a recovery phrase, wallet backup, PIN, password, or verification code into a webpage or send one to “support.” Those requests are decisive scam warnings.
A convincing logo, HTTPS padlock, polished design, advertisement, or high search ranking proves only that a page exists. It does not prove who operates it. Website authenticity, seller authorization, and the condition of a physical device are separate checks, so verify each one.

Why a professional-looking wallet site can still be fake
Hardware-wallet scams copy the visual identity of real manufacturers. Fake emails, websites, phone calls, applications, and support messages can use familiar colors, logos, help articles, and checkout pages. Trezor warns that you cannot judge safety by how “professional” a message looks or sounds. Ledger likewise cautions that fake applications and websites can look convincing.
Recommended Free Tools
The safest habit is to distrust the route by which you arrived. An unexpected email, text, social-media message, QR code, browser advertisement, or search result can lead to a counterfeit page even when the page itself looks perfect. Close that route and open a saved bookmark or navigate from the manufacturer’s known main domain instead.

Check the hostname, not just the page design
The browser’s full hostname is more informative than the page content. Read it carefully from right to left and identify the registrable domain—the part the site owner actually controls. A brand name appearing somewhere in a longer domain or subdomain does not make the site official.
Look for spelling substitutions
Scammers register domains that differ by one character or use letters that resemble others. Ledger gives variations such as “legder” and “ledqer” as examples. Compare every character with the manufacturer’s known address rather than relying on the logo or page title.
Watch for misleading subdomains and longer domains
A hostname can place a brand word at the beginning while ending in an unrelated registrable domain. The same applies to a path or page title that contains the manufacturer’s name. Read the ending of the hostname first; a familiar word to the left of an unrelated domain is not ownership evidence.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor example, a hostname that ends with the manufacturer’s genuine registrable domain is structurally different from one that merely starts with the brand and ends with an unrelated domain. A page title, browser tab label, company name in a URL path, or a lock icon cannot change which domain controls the page. When the ending is unfamiliar, stop rather than trying to “test” the page.
Use a bookmark you created from a trusted route
After opening the genuine manufacturer site through a known source, bookmark the pages you regularly need, such as the software download page and support center. Reuse that bookmark rather than searching for the site every time. If a bookmark suddenly redirects to a different domain, stop and verify through the manufacturer’s trusted security guidance.
Never provide wallet secrets to a website or support contact
A real support representative or setup page does not need your recovery phrase. Ledger’s guidance states: “Always remember: there is never a good reason to type your phrase into a computer.” Trezor’s rule is equally direct: “any request for your wallet backup, PIN, passwords, or codes is always a scam.”
Requests that should end the interaction
- “Verify,” “restore,” or “secure” the wallet by entering a recovery phrase or backup.
- Typing a device PIN into a webpage, chat window, email form, or remote-support tool.
- Sending a password, one-time code, authentication code, or full wallet details to support.
- Copying the recovery phrase into a computer or phone so a site can “synchronize” accounts.
Do not test the page with a partial phrase, upload a photograph, or paste the words into a form “just to see what happens.” Treat the phrase as equivalent to control of the accounts created from it.
A request can be fraudulent even when it uses your name, order number, device model, or a plausible explanation about maintenance. Those details may have been copied from a message, a public post, or an earlier interaction. The deciding question is not whether the request sounds helpful; it is whether it asks for information that the wallet maker says must remain private. If it does, end the conversation.
Download wallet software only through the official site
Use the manufacturer’s known main site to reach its wallet application download page. Trezor directs users to its official Suite download page and recommends bookmarking legitimate sites. Ledger similarly directs users to its own website for its wallet application.
- Close any download link delivered by an unsolicited message, advertisement, QR code, or unknown search listing.
- Open your saved manufacturer bookmark, or type the known official address yourself.
- Navigate through the site’s own menu to the current wallet application download page.
- Confirm that the download remains on the expected manufacturer domain before installing.
- If an installer asks for a recovery phrase, PIN, password, or code, cancel it and remove the installer.
A genuine-looking application reached through a fake site is still an unsafe download. The route matters as much as the appearance of the installer.
Apply the same discipline to updates, browser extensions, mobile applications, and recovery tools. An unsolicited notice that your software is “out of date” is not a reason to follow its button. Return to the bookmarked vendor site and look for the update from there. If the vendor’s page sends you to another domain for a legitimate service, confirm that transition through the vendor’s own navigation rather than trusting a stranger’s explanation.

Verify the seller separately from the website
A genuine manufacturer website does not make every marketplace listing safe, and a legitimate seller’s page does not prove that a different support site is authentic. For a purchase, use the manufacturer’s official store or a reseller that the manufacturer currently identifies as authorized.
Before ordering
- Compare the seller’s exact name and storefront with the manufacturer’s current official store or authorized-reseller information.
- Be cautious when a listing is reached through an unsolicited promotion or an unfamiliar domain, even if product photographs look official.
- Do not treat an arbitrary marketplace listing as endorsed merely because it uses the manufacturer’s branding.
- Keep the order confirmation and seller details so you can identify the actual source if a device arrives with problems.
Trezor identifies its official shop, its Amazon storefront, and authorized resellers as generally safe channels. Ledger recommends its own site or authorized resellers. Authorization can change, so check the manufacturer’s current information when you buy rather than relying on an old seller list.
Check the exact storefront, not only the marketplace name. A generally safe marketplace can contain separate third-party listings, and a seller can change its status. Open the manufacturer’s current reseller information independently, then compare the legal or storefront name exactly. If you cannot make that match, do not assume that a low price, fast shipping, large review count, or “fulfilled” label is an authenticity guarantee.
Inspect the device after delivery
Packaging and hardware checks are model-specific. Use the manufacturer’s current setup and authenticity instructions for the exact model; do not assume that one seal, hologram, or box feature applies to every wallet.

Trezor advises checking that packaging is complete and has not been tampered with. Missing components, opened packaging, unexplained labels, or signs of resealing warrant a pause while you contact the manufacturer through a trusted official channel.
Create the credentials yourself
Ledger says not to use a device that already has a PIN or recovery phrase set. During setup, the buyer should create the PIN and generate the recovery phrase on the device according to the current model instructions. A card, screen, or message that supplies a prewritten phrase is not a shortcut; it is a reason to stop.
Do not “activate” a device on a suspicious page
Some scams tell buyers that a device is locked or unverified and demand a phrase or code to unlock it. Return to the manufacturer’s official setup instructions instead. Hardware authenticity cannot be established by surrendering wallet secrets to a website.
Do not connect a questionable device to a computer merely to see whether it works. Preserve the packaging, order details, and seller information while you seek instructions through the manufacturer’s known domain. A support page reached from a card inside the box, a QR code, or an unsolicited message should be treated like any other untrusted route until independently confirmed.

Each check answers a different question. A genuine site does not prove that a physical device came from an authorized seller, and intact packaging does not prove that a website is genuine.
| Check | What a reassuring result looks like | What it cannot prove |
|---|---|---|
| Domain and contact route | You opened a known manufacturer domain or bookmark, and the hostname has no spelling substitutions or misleading ending. | That a marketplace device is genuine. |
| Requests for secrets | No page or contact asks for a recovery phrase, backup, PIN, password, or code. | That a site offering no secret request is operated by the vendor. |
| Software source | The download is reached through the manufacturer’s own site and remains on its expected domain. | That unrelated browser extensions or applications are safe. |
| Seller authorization | The exact shop or reseller appears in the manufacturer’s current official information. | That a separate support message or website is legitimate. |
| Device condition | Packaging is complete and untampered with, and setup begins with credentials you create yourself. | That the website used to order it was genuine. |
A practical verification sequence
Use this sequence whenever you receive a wallet message, visit a support page, download software, or buy a device.
- Stop the unexpected route. Close links from unsolicited email, text, social posts, QR codes, advertisements, or calls. Ledger says it does not contact users by phone or text; Trezor advises treating unsolicited messages and calls as phishing.
- Open a trusted route. Use a bookmark you created from the manufacturer’s known site or navigate from that known main domain.
- Read the hostname right to left. Identify the registrable domain and check for misspellings, lookalike characters, unusual endings, and brand words placed only in subdomains or paths.
- Scan for secret requests. If the page asks for a recovery phrase, backup, PIN, password, or code, do not submit anything. Close the page.
- Reach downloads through the vendor. Follow the manufacturer’s own navigation to the current wallet application page; do not use an unsolicited download link.
- Check the seller. For a purchase, match the exact seller with the manufacturer’s current official store or authorized-reseller information.
- Inspect the delivered device. Follow the exact model’s authenticity checklist, confirm the package is complete and untampered with, and reject any device that arrives with a preset PIN or recovery phrase.
How to check a crypto wallet URL on a phone
Mobile browsers often shorten or hide part of a URL, which makes the same hostname checks harder. Expand the address bar, select the URL, and inspect the complete hostname before entering information or downloading an application. If the message arrived through a QR code, do not assume scanning it makes the destination trustworthy; close it and use your saved bookmark or the manufacturer’s known domain instead.

Do not rely on an app’s icon, a familiar sender name, or a support chat badge. Those elements can be copied. The relevant evidence is the complete domain, the route you used to reach it, and whether the page asks for secrets. When the display is cramped or the address is difficult to read, move to a device where you can inspect it clearly.

Contact and support warning signs
Ledger says it does not contact users by phone or text. Trezor advises treating unsolicited messages and calls as phishing. A caller or chat agent who creates urgency, threatens loss of access, offers to “validate” a device, or insists that you stay on the line is giving you another reason to stop. Do not let a request for a small code, screenshot, or partial phrase become a larger disclosure.
End the contact and independently open the maker’s official security or support guidance. Do not reply to ask whether the original message was genuine; use a new route. The response address, phone number, or chat button inside the suspicious message may lead back to the same scammer.
Common traps and why they fail
“The padlock means it is official”
HTTPS protects the connection to the displayed site; it does not identify the site operator. A scammer can secure a counterfeit domain just as a legitimate operator can secure its own.
“It was the first search result”
Search placement is not an ownership certificate. Ads and compromised or lookalike listings can appear above the result you expected. Use your bookmark or a known manufacturer route.
“The logo and wording look perfect”
Visual imitation is inexpensive and effective. Compare the hostname and the requested information instead of judging design quality.
“Support needs the phrase to fix the wallet”
That is the exact behavior the manufacturers warn against. Stop communicating through that channel and open the maker’s official security guidance independently.
“The box has a seal, so the website must be safe”
Packaging condition concerns the physical item, not the domain that sold it. Perform both checks independently.
“A discount proves I found a bargain”
Price is not an authenticity test. Compare the exact seller with the manufacturer’s current authorized information. If you cannot verify the seller, a discount does not justify the risk.
If you already entered a recovery phrase
Ledger’s guidance says that anyone who has a recovery phrase has access to accounts created from it. Stop interacting with the suspected site and do not provide any additional information. Through a trusted route, consult the wallet maker’s official security guidance for the affected model and accounts. Do not assume that changing a website password or uninstalling an application removes control granted by an exposed recovery phrase.
The available manufacturer guidance does not establish a universal recovery sequence or promise that funds can be recovered. Avoid further instructions from the suspicious contact, especially requests for fees, new phrases, remote access, or “verification” payments.

How to decide when to walk away
Leave the page, cancel the download, or stop the purchase when any one of these conditions appears:
- You cannot confirm the registrable domain from a trusted route.
- The hostname contains a spelling substitution, lookalike character, or misleading brand subdomain.
- A page or person requests a recovery phrase, backup, PIN, password, or code.
- The software link did not originate from the manufacturer’s own site.
- The seller is absent from the manufacturer’s current official store or authorized-reseller information.
- The delivered device has a preset PIN or recovery phrase, incomplete contents, or signs of tampering.
When in doubt, end the session and restart from the manufacturer’s known domain. A short delay is safer than giving a stranger the information that controls the wallet.

How do I know if a hardware-wallet website is real?
Start with a bookmark you created from the manufacturer’s known site or navigate from its known main domain. Read the complete hostname from right to left, check for spelling substitutions and misleading endings, and confirm that no page or support contact requests your recovery phrase, backup, PIN, password, or code.
Is this Ledger or Trezor website fake?
Do not decide from the logo, wording, padlock, advertisement, or search position. Compare the full hostname with the manufacturer’s known domain, then independently open the maker’s official site. Ledger says it does not contact users by phone or text, and Trezor warns that unsolicited messages and calls can be phishing.
How do I check a crypto wallet URL?
Expand the browser address bar and identify the registrable domain at the end of the hostname. Look for misspellings such as “legder” or “ledqer,” lookalike characters, and brand words used only in a subdomain or path. If the ending is unfamiliar, close the page and use a trusted bookmark.
Where can I buy a genuine hardware wallet?
Use the manufacturer’s official store or a seller it currently identifies as authorized. Trezor lists its official shop, Amazon storefront, and authorized resellers as generally safe channels; Ledger recommends its own site or authorized resellers. Check the exact storefront at the time of purchase because authorization can change.
Can a real hardware wallet arrive in suspicious packaging?
Packaging checks are model-specific. Follow the current instructions for the exact model, and pause if contents are missing, packaging appears opened or resealed, or labels are unexplained. Contact the manufacturer through a trusted official route rather than a card, QR code, or message supplied by the questionable seller.
What should a new device ask me to do?
You should create the device PIN and generate the recovery phrase on the device according to the model’s current instructions. Do not use a device that already has a PIN or recovery phrase, and never enter a phrase on a website to activate or unlock hardware.
What if I already typed my recovery phrase into a fake site?
Assume that anyone who obtained it can access accounts created from it. Stop interacting with the site and contact the wallet maker through a trusted official route for guidance. Do not pay fees, provide another phrase, grant remote access, or follow further instructions from the suspicious contact.
Does HTTPS prove that a wallet website is official?
No. HTTPS protects the connection to the displayed domain but does not establish who operates that domain. A counterfeit site can have the same padlock as a legitimate one, so verify the hostname and route independently.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe Bottom Line
Use a trusted route, inspect the full hostname, and keep every wallet secret off websites and support channels. Download software through the manufacturer’s own navigation, buy only from its official store or currently authorized sellers, and authenticate the physical device using model-specific instructions. If anything asks for a recovery phrase, backup, PIN, password, or code, stop.
