How to Tell a Mountain Lion From a Bobcat, Lynx, or Other Wild Cat

Start with the tail and overall scale. An adult mountain lion is a large, uniformly tawny cat with a long, thick tail; a bobcat is much smaller and has a 4–6-inch bobbed tail; a Canada lynx is also short-tailed but usually has longer ear tufts and a tail that is black all the way around. Confirm those first impressions with coat markings, tracks, and what species actually occur where you saw the animal. A distant or partial view may not support a confident identification, and no sighting is worth approaching a wild cat.

The quickest safe way to narrow the identification

Use several independent clues instead of trying to match one photograph-like feature. The most useful order is scale, tail, head and coat, tracks, then geography. If the animal disappears before you can check all five, record the sighting as uncertain rather than forcing a species name.

  1. Estimate overall size without moving closer. Compare the cat with a fence post, parked vehicle, tree trunk, or another fixed object that was already beside it. Do not follow the animal or walk toward it to create a scale reference. Indiana Department of Natural Resources warns that nearby vegetation and objects can distort size estimates.
  2. Look at the tail. A long tail that appears roughly as long as the body points strongly toward a mountain lion. A very short tail points toward a bobcat or lynx. If the tail is visible end-on, note its pattern: a bobcat’s tip is black on top and white underneath, while a lynx’s is black all around.
  3. Check the ears and face. Both bobcats and lynx have ear tufts, but lynx tufts are generally longer. Bobcats show noticeable facial ruffs. A mountain lion has a more even, rounded head profile and dark-tipped ears and muzzle.
  4. Check the coat, while allowing for age and lighting. Adult mountain lions are commonly tawny, tan, or slightly reddish with a pale or white underside. Bobcats often show spots or bars. Lynx coats can be mottled and pale. Shadows, distance, wet fur, and seasonal coats can hide or exaggerate these patterns.
  5. Use tracks only as supporting evidence. Feline tracks usually show no claw marks and have a heel pad with two front lobes and three rear lobes. Measure several prints if you can do so from a safe distance; one distorted print is not decisive.
  6. Apply location as a filter. Range differs by region. For example, California Department of Fish and Wildlife states that Canada lynx are not found in California, making a short-tailed cat there more plausibly a bobcat than a Canada lynx. Verify local occurrence with the relevant wildlife agency.

Mountain lion, bobcat, and lynx compared

Clue Mountain lion Bobcat Lynx
Overall build Large, long-bodied, powerful cat; an adult is far larger than a bobcat. Smaller, muscular cat; California Fish and Wildlife describes it as about one quarter the size of a mountain lion. Intermediate in appearance; larger-footed and often leggier-looking than a bobcat.
Tail Long and thick, extending well beyond the hind legs. Short, typically 4–6 inches; “bobbed.” Tip is black on top and white underneath. Short. The tip of a Canada lynx tail is black all around.
Ears and face Rounded ears with dark tips; dark-tipped muzzle; no prominent long tufts. Short ear tufts and facial ruffs. Longer ear tufts than a bobcat; broad, tufted ears.
Coat Usually tawny, tan, or slightly reddish, with a white underside. May have spots or bars; pattern varies with region and season. Often grayish or buff and mottled, with a pale belly; appearance varies geographically and seasonally.
Typical track stride 32–44 inches, Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks comparison published in 2025. 22–26 inches in the same comparison. 24–33 inches in the same comparison.
Listed track width 3½–5 inches. About 2¼ inches. 3¾–4¾ inches.
Best first question Is the tail unmistakably long and the animal much larger than a house cat or bobcat? Is it a small cat with a very short tail and visible ruffs or spotting? Is it short-tailed, large-footed, and long-tufted, in a place where lynx occur?

The track ranges overlap: a large bobcat print can approach a small lynx print, and a lynx print can overlap the lower end of a mountain-lion range. Treat the table as a set of probabilities, not a species key that works from one measurement.

How to recognize a mountain lion

Body and tail

The adult mountain lion’s silhouette is the strongest clue. It is a large cat with a long, heavy tail that may trail behind the body or curve downward. The tail is not a short stub; even a partially hidden tail usually extends noticeably beyond the rump. A mountain lion’s torso, shoulders, and legs also look substantial compared with a bobcat.

Color and face

California Fish and Wildlife describes adults as tawny, tan, or slightly reddish, with a white underbelly and dark-tipped muzzle, ears, and tail. Color alone is unreliable in low light: a tawny coat can look gray, orange, or nearly black against a forest background. Look for the combination of a uniform body color and the long tail rather than a particular shade.

Kittens and juveniles

Young mountain lions are spotted. California Fish and Wildlife notes that the spots begin fading at about three months, so spots do not automatically mean bobcat. A kitten can also look deceptively small. If you see a spotted cat with a tail that is already long relative to its body, leave the identification open to a young mountain lion.

What not to infer

A large-looking cat is not automatically a mountain lion when perspective is poor. A cat near the camera can appear enormous, while a distant mountain lion can look bobcat-sized. Use a fixed object already in the scene, and record the uncertainty if scale cannot be judged.

How to recognize a bobcat

Tail and proportions

The bobcat’s namesake tail is short, normally about 4–6 inches according to California Fish and Wildlife. It may be hard to see in tall grass, but when visible it ends close to the rump rather than sweeping behind the animal. Bobcats have a compact, muscular body and relatively long legs for their size.

Head markings

Look for facial ruffs that flare beside the cheeks and short ear tufts. The tail tip is a useful close view: black on the upper surface and white underneath. Because the underside may be hidden, do not reject a bobcat simply because the white portion is not visible.

Coat pattern

Spots, bars, and mottling are common, but their strength changes with season, habitat, and lighting. A plain-looking bobcat seen in shadow can lose its pattern, while a mountain-lion kitten can gain one. Body size and tail shape should carry more weight than a single patch of fur.

How to separate a Canada lynx from a bobcat

Ear tufts and tail tip

Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks identifies longer ear tufts as a lynx clue. It also distinguishes the tails by color: a lynx tail tip is black all around, whereas a bobcat’s is black on top. These features are helpful when the head and tail are clearly visible, but distance can make short bobcat tufts look long or hide the pale underside of a bobcat tail.

Feet and stride

Lynx generally leave broad, furry-looking tracks and take a longer stride than bobcats. The 2025 Montana comparison lists a 24–33-inch lynx stride and a 22–26-inch bobcat stride, with listed widths of 3¾–4¾ inches and about 2¼ inches, respectively. Snow compression, soft mud, and an animal walking at a different pace can erase that distinction.

Geographic plausibility

Range is essential. A lynx identification should fit the local species list and habitat, not just the animal’s appearance. The National Park Service’s Canada lynx material compares lynx and bobcats, while state and provincial wildlife agencies provide the most useful local confirmation. In California, for instance, California Fish and Wildlife says Canada lynx are absent, so a short-tailed cat is more likely a bobcat.

Reading tracks without overconfidence

Feline track anatomy

Most cat tracks show four toe pads and a broad heel pad. California Fish and Wildlife describes the heel pad as having two lobes on the front edge and three on the rear edge. Claw marks are usually absent because cats retract their claws while walking. A track with obvious claw points may belong to a canine, although a cat can show claws while running, scrambling, or walking on an unusual surface.

Measurements from the 2025 comparison

Species Stride range Track width How to use it
Mountain lion 32–44 inches 3½–5 inches Long stride and broad print support a large cat, but a short stride can result from slow walking or uneven ground.
Lynx 24–33 inches 3¾–4¾ inches Width overlaps mountain lion; combine with ear-tuft, tail, habitat, and repeated-track evidence.
Bobcat 22–26 inches About 2¼ inches Usually the smallest print and shortest stride, though substrate can enlarge or shrink the apparent outline.

These figures are approximate field ranges from Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks’ 2025 wolf and furbearer regulations comparison; they are not a promise that every individual will fall inside the range. Snow, mud, sand, leaf litter, slope, and scale in a photograph can change the measurement.

How to measure a track line

  1. Photograph the print with a ruler or another known-size object only if you can place it without disturbing the site or putting yourself near the animal.
  2. Measure the widest part of the individual print, not the smear created by a sliding foot.
  3. Measure stride from the same point on one print to the corresponding point on the next print in the same track line.
  4. Record several consecutive prints and discard obviously partial, overlapping, or melted impressions.
  5. Compare the measurements with the animal’s visible tail, body size, and local range. A track result that conflicts with all other clues deserves an “uncertain” label.

Using geography as an early filter

Species ranges overlap in some regions and are sharply separated in others. Start by asking which wild cats are documented in the county, park, or watershed, then use appearance to distinguish the plausible candidates. Local wildlife agencies can account for reintroductions, occasional dispersers, and records that a broad national guide misses.

Geography cannot rescue a poor observation. A short-tailed cat in a place where both bobcats and lynx occur still requires tail-tip, ear-tuft, foot, coat, and track clues. Conversely, a clear sighting in a region without Canada lynx should not be relabeled “lynx” simply because the ears looked tufted.

Why photographs and brief sightings mislead

Perspective and hidden tails

A cat walking toward the camera may hide most of its tail. Tall grass can conceal a bobcat’s entire tail, while a mountain lion’s tail can blend into shadow. A side view is more informative than a frontal view, but do not wait for a better angle by approaching.

Lighting and seasonal coats

Backlighting removes color detail; flash can create false white patches. Wet fur clumps, and winter coats can make feet and ear tufts look larger. Describe what was actually visible—“short tail, broad feet, long-looking ear tufts”—rather than adding details the image cannot support.

Scale errors

Nearby branches, rocks, and fence rails can be closer to the camera than the cat. Indiana DNR specifically advises accounting for surrounding objects and vegetation when estimating size. A ruler placed digitally beside an animal in a photograph is meaningful only when both are in the same plane and the object’s distance is known.

Other lookalikes

Domestic cats, feral cats, coyotes seen head-on, and partially hidden animals can produce misleading silhouettes. Ear shape, gait, tail carriage, and repeated images help, but a partial glimpse may never resolve the question. “Unidentified wild cat” is a valid field conclusion when evidence is weak.

What to do if the cat may be a mountain lion

Identification comes second to distance and an escape route. California Fish and Wildlife’s encounter guidance says: “Never approach a mountain lion. Give them an escape route.” It also says: “DO NOT RUN. Stay calm. Do not turn your back.”

  • Face the animal and keep it in view without advancing.
  • Do not run, crouch, or turn your back.
  • Make yourself look larger and use a firm voice or other noise if the animal remains nearby.
  • Keep children close and pick up small pets when that can be done without moving toward the cat; otherwise keep pets leashed and behind you.
  • Back away slowly toward a building, vehicle, or other secure place, leaving the cat a clear route away from you.
  • Do not approach a carcass, den, kitten, or animal that is feeding, cornered, or injured.
  • After reaching safety, follow the local wildlife agency’s reporting instructions for a concerning encounter.

These steps also protect you when the species is uncertain. A bobcat or lynx normally wants distance, but a frightened, sick, injured, or habituated animal can behave unpredictably.

A practical field checklist

Write down observations immediately after the animal leaves. Memory tends to replace a short tail with a long one or add colors that were never visible.

  • Confidence: high only when several independent clues agree; otherwise record “probable” or “uncertain.”

When a field guide helps—and when it cannot

A printed animal-track guide can be useful for learning pad shape, stride terminology, and regional species lists before you go outdoors. Use one as an educational reference, not as proof that an ambiguous photograph shows a particular cat. The agency comparisons cited above are most valuable when you practice on clear tracks and learn the limits of measurements.

Binoculars or a camera with a zoom lens can let you observe from farther away, but equipment does not justify closing the distance. The safest identification is the one made from the place where you already are.

How to report an uncertain sighting

Contact the local wildlife agency when an animal is repeatedly visiting homes, approaching people, acting sick or injured, or has been involved in a pet incident. Provide the location, time, behavior, direction of travel, photographs taken from a safe distance, and the features you actually observed. Avoid presenting a guess as a confirmed species; agency staff can weigh the report against local records and evidence.
