How to Tell a Honeybee Swarm From a Nest or Wasps

A dense cluster of bees sitting out in the open may be a temporary honeybee swarm; steady bee traffic disappearing into a wall, roof or other cavity is more consistent with an established colony. Wasps and hornets often look less fuzzy and may build papery nests. These are clues, not a safe or definitive identification test: keep your distance, do not disturb or spray the insects, and contact a local beekeeper or qualified professional for help.

Start with the safest visible clues

From a place where you can remain well away, note where the insects are and what they are doing. An exposed, tightly grouped cluster is consistent with a resting honeybee swarm. Repeated flights into and out of one opening point more toward a colony occupying a cavity. A papery nest and insects with less-fuzzy bodies and a narrow waist may indicate wasps or hornets.

No single clue proves what you are seeing. A cluster can be difficult to identify at a glance, wasps vary in their nesting habits, and a calm-looking group is not a guarantee that it is safe to approach. The purpose of these observations is to choose an appropriate local contact—not to get close enough to inspect or handle the insects.

Compare the possibilities

What you can observe from a distance More consistent with What to do next
A dense, exposed group on a branch, shrub, fence or similar surface, without a clear pattern of traffic into one opening A temporary honeybee swarm, but this is not confirmation Keep people and pets back; contact a local beekeeper or beekeeping association about collection
Bees repeatedly entering and leaving a crack, hole, wall, roof or other cavity; beeswax comb may also be visible An established honeybee colony Do not open the cavity; contact a qualified local removal professional or pest-control provider
Insects that appear less fuzzy and narrow-waisted, or a nest that looks papery Possibly wasps or hornets; not every wasp builds a communal nest Do not approach to confirm; seek local expert advice if the nest is a concern

Use the comparison as a first sorting step, not a diagnosis. One clue may be unclear or unavailable: a cavity entrance can be difficult to see, comb may be hidden inside a wall, and you may not be able to judge body shape from a safe distance. It is reasonable to tell the person you contact that you are unsure. There is no need to choose a label before asking for help.

What a honeybee swarm is—and what it is not

A swarm is a group of honey bees that has left a colony and clusters while scout bees search for a suitable new nesting site. It may settle temporarily on a branch, shrub or another exposed surface. The cluster is different from the colony’s permanent nest: the bees are gathered together while the scouts look for a place to establish it.

A swarm can be large. Cornell Cooperative Extension’s Wayne County page, last updated November 16, 2015, describes swarms as containing “Upwards of 20,000 bees.” Treat that as an upper-scale descriptive figure from that page, not as a typical count or a way to estimate the size of a particular cluster.

Swarms are temporary, but there is no dependable departure time to promise. Extension guidance describes a stay ranging from about an hour to a few days, depending on conditions and scouting. A cluster still present after a short wait does not, by itself, prove that it is an established nest; repeated traffic into a cavity is a more useful clue.

Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, in guidance last reviewed in May 2023, quotes Donald Lewis: “Swarms are temporary and the bees will move on if you patiently ignore them.” That describes swarm behavior, not a reason to approach one or leave a potentially hazardous situation unmanaged. Observe only from a safe distance and seek local advice when needed.

Waiting is not a required test. If the cluster is near a place people or pets need to use, or you are uncomfortable assessing it, keep clear and contact a local expert rather than timing how long it stays. Conversely, a cluster that has not moved yet is not automatically a permanent nest. Duration is only one piece of context, and the available guidance does not provide a precise countdown that applies to every swarm.

How an established honeybee colony looks different

The key distinction is often not the number of visible bees but their relationship to a particular opening. Repeated trips into and out of a crack, hole, wall, roof or other cavity suggest bees are using that space as a nest. An exposed cluster may be a temporary swarm; a persistent flight path to one entrance is a stronger sign of a colony established inside.

Beeswax comb, honey or other colony activity visible inside a structure also supports the possibility of an established nest. Do not reach into the opening, remove material, or open a wall to check. A cavity can contain bees and comb that cannot be assessed safely from the outside.

When reporting activity, describe what you have actually observed: the general location, whether insects are clustered or repeatedly flying to an opening, and whether the opening is in a building or on a freestanding surface. If you can observe safely, note the broad type of location—such as a roofline, wall opening or tree—without approaching it. Do not take measurements or investigate hidden spaces to make the description more complete.

Why removal from a building is a different job

A colony in a structure may require access to the cavity and removal of both the bees and the comb. The University of Maryland Extension warns that killing bees while leaving the nest material behind can lead to melting wax and honey, seepage, odor and pests. For that reason, when calling a qualified local removal professional or pest-control provider, ask how both the bees and the comb will be handled. A service that addresses only the visible flying insects may not address the remaining nest material.

The work can involve the building itself, so a removal plan should be based on the actual location and access needs rather than on the appearance of bees at the entrance. Do not try to create access yourself or disturb the cavity while arranging help.

It can help to make the difference between an exposed cluster and a building cavity clear when you call. A beekeeper or association may be able to advise about collecting an accessible swarm, while a colony established inside a structure may need a professional prepared to address the cavity and comb. These are different situations and may call for different people; do not assume one contact offers every type of service.

How wasps and hornets differ from honey bees

Honey bees are generally fuzzy and brownish or golden. Wasps and hornets commonly appear less fuzzy and have a narrower waist. Honey bees build beeswax comb; social wasps may build nests made of paper-like material. These broad traits can help you decide what to report to a local expert, but they do not identify every species reliably.

Wasps are not all alike. Indiana Department of Natural Resources notes that many wasps are solitary, so it is not correct to assume every wasp will be near a large communal nest. Likewise, seeing a papery structure is a useful clue, not proof of the precise insect or species.

Do not approach a nest to inspect its material, count insects, or get a better view of their markings. If you can take a photograph from where you already are without moving closer or disturbing the insects, it may help an expert. If not, describe the location, pattern of movement and general appearance from memory instead.

A field guide can be an optional reference for comparing general bee and wasp appearances, but it is not needed to take the safe first steps. Do not carry a book or phone closer to the insects in an effort to identify them. A guide cannot make an uncertain close inspection safe, and broad visual traits are not a substitute for local expert identification.

What to do, step by step

  1. Make space. Keep children and pets away and stay at a safe distance. Do not touch, swat, spray or try to collect the cluster or nest.
  2. Observe only what is already visible. From your safe position, note whether the insects form an exposed cluster, repeatedly use one opening, or are near a papery-looking nest. Do not open a wall or reach into a cavity.
  3. If it appears to be an exposed honeybee swarm, contact a local beekeeper or beekeeping association. Ask whether someone in your area can collect it. Some swarms may move on by themselves, but timing and local collection availability vary.
  4. If bees repeatedly use a building cavity or comb is visible, contact a qualified local removal professional or pest-control provider. Ask how the plan addresses both bees and comb, since leaving nest material can create property problems.
  5. If identification is uncertain or the situation presents an immediate hazard, stay away and contact local authorities or a qualified professional for advice appropriate to your area. Do not take a closer look to settle the identification yourself.

What to ask when you call

Keep the call focused on the visible facts and the kind of help you need. For a suspected exposed swarm, ask a local beekeeper or beekeeping association whether they handle swarm collection in your area and whether the location is accessible for them. Availability and arrangements vary, so a referral or collection should not be assumed.

For possible bees inside a building, explain that you see repeated traffic to a particular opening, if that is what you have observed. Ask whether the professional handles established colonies in structures and how the work will address both the bees and the comb. If access to a wall, roof or other part of the building may be needed, ask how the plan accounts for that. Local services and fees vary; confirm local arrangements directly rather than relying on a general price expectation.

If the insects may be wasps or hornets, say that the identification is uncertain and report the visible nest or movement pattern. Do not promise that the insects are honey bees based on one clue. A local professional can advise what service, if any, fits the situation. If there is an immediate hazard, prioritize distance and local urgent guidance over trying to take a photo or complete an identification checklist.

Why location can change the advice

Local species, available services and recommendations differ. Indiana DNR provides state-specific information, while the University of Maryland Extension and Iowa State Extension offer guidance that should not be turned into a universal rule for every region. A beekeeper or removal professional familiar with local conditions is better placed to advise on the insect and the appropriate response there.

Geography matters particularly for African honey bee warnings. University of Florida IFAS discusses their risk and advises against approaching a swarm in its regional guidance, noting that a cluster could instead be a newly established colony. Those warnings should be applied in the Florida context described by IFAS, not generalized as a claim about every swarm everywhere. The safe general approach remains the same: observe from a distance and get local expert help.

Seasonal activity and management recommendations can also be region-specific. State or university extension guidance written for one location should not be treated as a universal calendar or removal instruction. If you are unsure which local resource applies, a regional beekeeper association, extension office, local authority or qualified professional may help direct you to appropriate advice.

Common misreadings to avoid

  • “It is outside, so it must be a harmless swarm.” An exposed cluster is consistent with a swarm, but appearance alone cannot establish what it is or make close approach safe.
  • “They have been there for a while, so it must be a nest.” Swarm duration varies; time alone is not decisive. Repeated entry into a particular cavity is a more useful sign of an established colony.
  • “I can tell by body shape or nest material alone.” Fuzziness, waist shape and nest material are broad clues, not a complete identification key for every species.
  • “If I kill the visible bees, the problem is solved.” In a building, remaining comb and honey can cause seepage, odor and pest problems; professional removal may need to address the nest material as well.
  • “A closer photo will settle it.” A photo is useful only if taken without approaching or disturbing the insects. Safety matters more than a better image.
  • “Every wasp makes a visible paper nest.” Many wasps are solitary, so the absence of a communal nest does not rule them out.
  • “A beekeeper will always be available or remove bees from a wall.” Swarm collection availability and professional services vary locally. Ask what the person handles instead of assuming a single contact is right for every situation.

Examples of questions people ask

People often describe the situation in everyday terms rather than using a precise insect name. An April 22, 2024 Ask Extension question asked, “There’s a swarm on our house in TP. What should we do?” Another Ask Extension question, dated September 9, 2014, described “a large honey bee nest about 15 feet up in a tree” and asked who to call. These are examples of reader wording, not evidence about how common either situation is.

The useful first response in either case is to avoid getting closer and separate the description from the identification: Is there an exposed cluster, repeated traffic into a cavity, or a visible nest? A cluster on a house does not, by itself, establish that bees are inside the structure; repeated trips into a crack or cavity are a more relevant clue. Likewise, the height of a cluster in a tree does not tell you whether it is a temporary swarm or what collection services are available. Tell the local contact what you can see and ask whether they handle that situation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the location is difficult to access, such as a high tree branch, do not climb or attempt to knock down the cluster. Ask the local beekeeper or other qualified contact whether they can help with that specific location. Local availability varies, so confirm whether a beekeeper can collect a high or otherwise inaccessible swarm.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I tell whether bees are swarming or nesting in my house?

An exposed, dense cluster on a branch, shrub or similar surface is consistent with a temporary swarm. Repeated bee traffic into a particular wall, roof or other cavity is more consistent with an established colony. Neither clue is definitive, so observe only from a safe distance and contact the appropriate local help.

How long will a honeybee swarm stay?

Extension guidance describes a range from about an hour to a few days, depending on conditions and scouting. There is no dependable departure time to promise. A cluster’s duration alone does not establish that it is a permanent nest.

Should I spray or knock down a swarm?

No. Keep people and pets away, and do not touch, swat, spray or try to collect the cluster. Contact a local beekeeper or beekeeping association about a suspected exposed honeybee swarm.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Who should I call for bees in a wall or roof?

Contact a qualified local removal professional or pest-control provider. Ask how the plan will address both the bees and the comb, since leaving nest material in a building can lead to melting wax and honey, seepage, odor and pests.

Can I identify a wasp by its nest?

A papery nest and a less-fuzzy, narrow-waisted appearance are broad clues that may point toward wasps or hornets. They are not a definitive identification key, and many wasps are solitary rather than living in a communal nest. Do not approach to inspect.

Is a swarm safe if it looks calm?

A calm appearance does not guarantee that a group is a swarm or that it is safe to approach. Observe only from a distance and get local expert advice. Regional warnings, including Florida IFAS guidance about African honey bees, should be applied in the geography they address.

What if the cluster is high in a tree or hard to reach?

Do not climb, shake or knock it down. Tell a local beekeeper or beekeeping association where it is and ask whether they handle collection from that location. Availability and ability to collect vary.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

An exposed cluster may be a temporary honeybee swarm; repeated traffic into a building cavity points more toward an established colony, while papery nests and less-fuzzy, narrow-waisted insects may indicate wasps or hornets. These are clues, not proof. Keep people and pets back, do not disturb or spray the insects, and contact a local beekeeper about a suspected swarm or a qualified professional about bees in a structure. Ask how both bees and comb will be handled when a building is involved.
