An “exchange deposit” and a “wallet transfer” are not different kinds of blockchain transaction. The difference is what the destination is and how it handles the incoming funds: a self-custody wallet is controlled by its owner, while an exchange deposit is an incoming transfer the exchange must identify and credit to a customer account.
What makes a transfer an exchange deposit?
OKX defines a deposit as “transferring crypto from another exchange or platform to your OKX account” (OKX Help Center). The blockchain records a transfer to an address; “deposit” describes the receiving exchange’s process for associating that incoming transfer with your account and adding it to your internal balance. Kraken likewise explains that a deposit appears in an account after the required blockchain confirmations are complete (Kraken Support).

A wallet transfer describes sending crypto to a wallet address. With a self-custody wallet, the owner controls the keys. With an exchange, the platform operates or controls the destination wallet infrastructure and credits the customer’s account according to its own deposit rules (Coinbase Help).
How to tell where your crypto was sent
- Check where you got the destination details. If you copied the address and network from an exchange’s deposit page after choosing an asset, the transfer was intended as an exchange deposit. That page may also show a required memo or destination tag. If you copied the address from a self-custody wallet’s Receive screen, it was intended for that wallet. Check the original instructions or your account records; an address alone does not reliably identify who controls it (Kraken; OKX; Binance.US; Exodus).
- Match the asset and network separately. Confirm that both the coin or token and the network match the receiving destination’s current instructions. A token may be transferable on multiple networks, but the receiving service may support only particular combinations. Sending an unsupported asset or using an unsupported network can leave funds inaccessible or difficult to recover (Kraken; OKX; Binance.US).
- Check for a memo or destination tag. Some platforms use a shared on-chain address for certain assets and rely on a tag or memo to route a transfer to the right customer account. Whether it is required depends on the asset and destination. Coinbase’s help page gives examples including XRP, XLM, ATOM and HBAR; that is Coinbase-specific guidance, not a universal list (Coinbase Help). Exodus notes that tags and memos are generally not needed for unique self-custody receiving addresses, but do not assume that applies to every network or service (Exodus). Coinbase explains: “This extra field allows exchanges like Coinbase to route deposits from one shared address to the correct customer account, and is required for all deposits of these crypto assets to Coinbase.”
- Look up the transaction ID (TxID). Use the blockchain explorer for the network used to check the transaction’s status and confirmations. This confirms what happened on-chain, not whether an exchange has credited your account. The exchange may require a particular number of confirmations and may apply additional deposit processing rules (Binance.US; Kraken; OKX).
Wallet transfer vs. exchange deposit at a glance
| What to compare | Self-custody wallet transfer | Exchange deposit |
|---|---|---|
| Who controls the destination | The wallet owner controls the keys. | The exchange operates or controls the destination wallet infrastructure and credits an internal customer balance. |
| Where the address usually comes from | The wallet’s Receive screen. | The exchange’s deposit page for the selected asset and network. |
| Memo or destination tag | Generally not needed for a unique self-custody receiving address; check the wallet’s instructions. | May be required for particular asset and platform combinations; check the exchange’s current instructions. |
| What confirmations establish | The transaction’s on-chain status. | The transaction’s on-chain status; the exchange must still process and credit the deposit. |
| What counts as completion | The transfer reaches the wallet address and is available under that wallet’s controls. | The exchange credits the funds to the intended customer account, subject to its deposit rules. |
Why a transfer can be confirmed but not deposited
“Confirmed” on a blockchain explorer and “credited” in an exchange account are separate checkpoints. The explorer reports network activity. The exchange determines when its confirmation requirement is met and whether the transfer satisfies its deposit requirements. Kraken puts it this way: “After sending the crypto, your deposit will appear in your Kraken account once the required confirmations are completed on the blockchain.” The number of confirmations and other processing conditions vary by platform, asset and network; use the current instructions for the exact destination.

What to check if the exchange has not credited the funds
- Open the receiving exchange’s deposit record and verify the asset, network and destination address against the transaction.
- Check whether the asset’s deposit minimum applies and whether the exchange required a memo or tag. Compare the required value with what was included in the transfer.
- Search the TxID in the correct network’s explorer and note its status and confirmations.
- If the transaction is confirmed but the account still shows no credit, contact the receiving platform through its official support flow and provide the TxID and relevant deposit details (OKX; Kraken; Coinbase; Binance.US).
Do not share your private keys or recovery phrase with support or anyone claiming to help. A successful on-chain transaction does not guarantee an exchange can recover or credit an unsupported transfer.

For a new address, network or tag requirement, sending a small test first can help catch a copied-address error or a missed instruction before sending a larger amount (Coinbase; Exodus). It is a precaution, not a recovery method: it cannot make an unsupported asset or network recoverable (Binance.US). Always check the receiving service’s current instructions for the exact asset and network before sending.
