Minecraft has no dogs. The animal you tame is the wolf, and players usually call a tamed wolf their dog. To tame one, find a wild wolf that is not hostile and use a bone on it. Each bone gives a one-in-three chance of success, according to Mojang’s “Taking Inventory: Bone” article (2019), so a failed attempt is normal and you simply use another bone.
Step-by-step: taming a wolf
- Locate a wolf that is not angry. Wolves that are hostile cannot be tamed with a bone (see below).
- Collect bones. You need at least one in your inventory, and having several saves time because each attempt uses one bone.
- Approach the wolf slowly and select the bone in your hotbar.
- Use the bone on the wolf. The control for “use” or “interact” differs between Java Edition, Bedrock Edition, consoles and touch devices, so check your edition’s controls list if you are unsure which button applies.
- If the wolf is not tamed, use another bone. Keep repeating until it works.
Once a wolf is tamed, it becomes your companion and follows you. The source does not describe the exact visual or sound feedback for every edition, so watch for the change in the wolf’s behavior to confirm success.

Wild versus hostile wolves
The bone mechanic depends on the wolf’s state. Mojang’s Bone article gives these two outcomes:
| Wolf state | Chance per bone | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Wild, non-hostile wolf | One in three | Mojang, “Taking Inventory: Bone” (2019) |
| Hostile wolf | Zero in three | Mojang, “Taking Inventory: Bone” (2019) |
Mojang’s wording on the hostile case is direct: using a bone on a hostile wolf carries “a high risk of serious injury.” Do not try to tame an aggressive wolf. Move away from it, let it calm down, or deal with the threat first.

Choosing a wolf’s appearance
Wolf variants are determined by the biome where the wolf spawns, so if you want a particular look, look for it in the matching biome. The nine variants below come from Mojang’s Java Edition 1.20.5 release notes (“Armored Paws,” 2024). Later versions may change spawn rules, so check the notes for your version.
| Variant | Natural biome |
|---|---|
| Woods | Forest |
| Pale | Taiga |
| Ashen | Snowy taiga |
| Black | Old growth pine taiga |
| Chestnut | Old growth spruce taiga |
| Rusty | Sparse jungle |
| Spotted | Savanna plateau |
| Striped | Wooded badlands |
| Snowy | Grove |
Mojang’s “New Minecraft Wolves” article (March 6, 2024) also introduced wolf armor, which absorbs incoming damage until it breaks and can be repaired with armadillo scutes. Armor is optional and is not needed to tame a wolf.

Troubleshooting
- Bone is used but nothing happens: The attempt failed. Each bone is an independent one-in-three roll, so use another.
- You ran out of bones: Collect more before approaching. The source does not state a fixed number of bones needed, and no number is guaranteed.
- The wolf attacks you: It is hostile. Stop, retreat, and wait for it to calm down before attempting again.
- You cannot find the variant you want: Check the biome table above and confirm the spawn rules in your version’s notes.
