How to Talk to Kids About Violent Video Games and Age Ratings

Start by asking what your child likes about the game and what they think happens in it. Listen before deciding, then look at the game’s age category, content descriptors and interactive features together. Ratings are useful clues—not a substitute for knowing the game, your child’s response and your family’s boundaries.

Start with curiosity, not a verdict

Ask open questions before saying whether the game is allowed. For example:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • “What do you like about this game?”
  • “What happens in it?”
  • “Which parts feel exciting, scary or uncomfortable?”

If possible, watch or play together. An older child can explain why they want the game and what they think its rating means. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends that parents become familiar with a game’s content before allowing a child to buy, download or play it. ESRB President Patricia E. Vance likewise advises starting with an open, non-judgmental conversation (ESRB, April 30, 2020).

When you discuss violent scenes, ask how they felt rather than arguing over whether your child’s reaction is right. Explain your own concerns and connect them to family values such as kindness, respect and tolerance. The AAP also suggests pointing out when violence is rewarded or glamorized.

What a video game age rating tells you

In the United States and Canada, the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) label has three parts: a Rating Category, Content Descriptors and Interactive Elements. The category gives an age-based guide; descriptors identify content that contributed to the rating; interactive elements flag features such as interaction with other users or in-game purchases. Check the specific game’s rating summary or store listing, including for digital titles, rather than relying on its genre or someone else’s description. The ESRB system is voluntary, although some console makers, retailers and digital storefronts require ratings for titles they offer (ESRB ratings guide).

Use the category and descriptors together. Then consider the child’s maturity, temperament, sensitivity to frightening or violent material, and your family’s values. Also check communication and spending settings: an age rating does not tell you everything about how a child may interact with other players or make purchases.

How to set boundaries that fit the child

Make rules concrete and explain the reason for them. Decide which games are allowed, when and where play happens, what the child should do if content feels upsetting, and whether online communication or purchases are enabled. If siblings share devices, separate child accounts and age-based restrictions can help prevent a younger child from opening an older sibling’s game.

For practical account and family-rule guidance, ESRB suggests adult supervision for very young children; account controls for ages 5–9; checking ratings and communication settings for ages 10–12; and open conversation with rules adjusted to maturity for teens ages 13–16. These are ESRB parent-guide suggestions, not clinical developmental milestones. Revisit rules as a child’s maturity and circumstances change (ESRB parental controls guide).

The AAP recommends a family media plan and checking parental controls. A kitchen timer is one optional way to make an agreed play-session limit clear; it does not replace deciding whether the game’s content is appropriate (AAP Family Media Plan).

How age and development affect the decision

The AAP says children under six may not distinguish fantasy from reality and recommends trying to exclude violent content from their media diet. For older children, the guidance does not set one universal age at which every violent game becomes appropriate. Learn what the game depicts, observe how your child responds and make a decision based on their age, temperament and needs (AAP guidance on virtual violence, last updated November 28, 2022).

Are violent video games harmful?

A single game does not determine whether a child will become violent. David L. Hill, MD, FAAP, author of the AAP’s virtual-violence guidance, writes that “No single violent movie or video game will make your child violent.” The AAP emphasizes the amount and intensity of virtual violence over time, alongside factors such as age, temperament and individual needs. That is why both the game’s content and the child’s response matter.

In its December 9, 2024 survey summary, ESRB reported that among surveyed parents of children ages 3–15 who play video games, 84% were aware of the rating system and 78% used it regularly—“every time” or “most of the time”—when deciding which games were appropriate. ESRB also reported that 85% considered Rating Categories and Content Descriptors very or extremely important, 76% said the same of Interactive Elements, and 80% used parental controls on at least one game device at home (ESRB survey summary). These are figures reported by ESRB about its survey; they describe reported awareness and use, not whether ratings prevent exposure or predict a particular child’s reaction.

What to do if your child seems upset or changes behavior

If a scene unsettles your child, pause the game and ask what bothered them. Listen, reassure them that they can tell you when something feels uncomfortable, and decide together whether to stop, change games or adjust settings. If mood or behavior difficulties persist, or you remain concerned about virtual violence, discuss what you have observed with the child’s pediatrician. The AAP says a pediatrician can tailor advice and refer a family when needed. Its guidance is general, not a diagnosis or a substitute for individual clinical advice.
