How to Talk to Kids About Energy Drinks Without Starting a Fight

Start with curiosity, not a lecture: ask, “What do you like about it?” or “When do you feel like you need one?” Listen to the answer, then share one clear concern and agree on a practical next step. The aim is a calmer conversation—not a guaranteed way to avoid disagreement.

Why energy drinks are different from sports drinks

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) says energy drinks are not appropriate for children and adolescents, and its parent guidance says avoiding caffeine is the best choice for children. Energy drinks are marketed for stimulation; sports drinks are flavored beverages that often contain carbohydrates and electrolytes. They are not interchangeable.

For routine activity, sports drinks generally are not needed instead of water. Water is the principal hydration source for children and adolescents. Sports drinks have a limited role during prolonged, vigorous activity, according to the AAP. If your child says they want an energy drink for sports or hydration, this distinction is a useful place to begin.

CDC guidance for schools and families also encourages coaches to explain the difference and teach athletes to read labels.

How to start the conversation

Choose a neutral moment

Bring it up when neither of you is already upset—not in the middle of an argument or as your first response to finding a can. A calm moment makes it easier to hear what is going on before trying to solve it.

Ask what the drink does for them

Try an open question such as “What do you like about it?” or “When do you feel like you need one?” They may mention taste, staying awake, sports, or fitting in. Treat the answer as information, not something to argue away. You can reflect it back: “So you like the taste,” or “You’re trying to get through the afternoon.”

Share one or two concerns

Keep the health explanation specific and brief. For example: “Caffeine can make it harder to sleep,” or “It can leave you feeling jittery.” AAP guidance encourages parents to discuss healthy choices and help children notice how caffeine affects their bodies. You do not need to recite every possible effect in the first conversation.

Sleep is a concrete starting point: AAP Committee on Nutrition member Tamara S. Hannon, M.D., M.S., FAAP, says energy drinks “have a profound negative impact on sleep.” The AAP parent guide also notes that caffeine is not a substitute for lost sleep.

Look at the label together

Check the serving size as well as the caffeine amount. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) gives a typical range of 41–246 mg of caffeine per 12 fluid ounces for energy drinks, based on category-level data attributed to a June 2015 study. That range is not a measurement of every product: amounts and container sizes vary. Caffeine may also come from ingredients such as guarana.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports the AAP recommendation that adolescents avoid consuming more than 100 mg of caffeine per day. That is an upper daily limit, not a target and not an endorsement of energy drinks. The AAP’s parent guidance says avoiding caffeine is the best choice for children.

Connect the concern to what your child needs

If they want hydration or sports performance

Explain that energy drinks are not sports drinks, then offer water as the usual choice. For an athlete doing prolonged, vigorous activity, ask the pediatrician or coach whether a sports drink has a role; it is not needed for ordinary activity in place of water.

If they are trying to stay awake

Ask what part of their schedule is leaving them tired and whether there is a realistic way to protect more sleep. Caffeine can remain in the body for more than eight hours, depending on metabolism. When it wears off, a child may have a headache, feel irritable, or feel tired; the timing and effects are not identical for everyone.

If taste or social pressure is the draw

Acknowledge that taste or wanting to fit in can matter without treating either as a medical argument. You can ask what alternative would feel acceptable to them, or agree to check caffeine in other drinks together. The point is to make a decision with them rather than turn the conversation into a test of obedience.

Agree on one next step

End with a small, concrete action rather than a broad demand. Depending on what your child said, you could:

  • Choose water when the need is hydration.
  • Read the serving size and caffeine content on drinks together.
  • Talk with their pediatrician about their caffeine intake, especially if they have a health condition or take medication.
  • Look at sleep and scheduling if they feel they need caffeine to get through the day.

Follow through consistently, and model the choice where you can. CDC advises: “Everyone can model healthy behavior by not drinking energy drinks in front of kids.”

Know when caffeine exposure needs medical help

Too much caffeine can cause sleep problems, anxiety or jitters, increased heart rate, palpitations, high blood pressure, and digestive problems. CDC also lists dehydration and heart complications among potential dangers of energy drinks, which can contain added sugars, additives, and stimulants such as guarana, taurine, and L-carnitine.

If a child has consumed a large amount and develops a racing or irregular heartbeat, fast breathing, uncontrolled body shakes, anxiety, or hyperactivity, the AAP parent guide says to get medical help right away. For other concerns about a child or teen’s caffeine use, the FDA advises talking with a health professional.

The FDA says it does not have a regulation specific to energy drinks; general ingredient regulations apply. That regulatory distinction alone does not establish that every product is unsafe or unregulated.
