How to Talk to Kids About AI Chatbots and Online Safety

The most effective conversation about AI chatbots is calm, curious and ongoing. Ask what your child has tried, what they use it for and whether any answer felt strange or wrong. Then agree on boundaries for age, purpose, privacy and time, while keeping trusted people—not a chatbot—at the center of support.

Children may meet chatbots at home, in school, through friends or inside familiar devices. Talking before a problem appears gives them a way to ask for help when an answer is unsafe, a service requests personal information or the interaction starts replacing sleep, schoolwork, friends or hobbies.

Why start the conversation now?

AI is already part of many children’s daily environment. UNICEF Parenting quotes Ying Xu, Assistant Professor of AI in Learning and Education at Harvard University: “Parents can begin talking about AI when children are quite young, because many kids already encounter AI in their everyday lives.” A child does not need to own a chatbot account to encounter one; a classmate, school platform, search tool or family device may provide the first exposure.

Adoption is substantial but uneven. A June 2026 UNICEF Innocenti brief found that up to 50 per cent of surveyed children were using AI, and one in ten had turned to AI for advice about things that worry them. Those figures come from children and caregivers in 10 countries—Armenia, Brazil, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Jordan, Mexico, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Pakistan and Serbia—so they should not be treated as a worldwide rate.

Common Sense Media’s 2026 findings also indicate a communication gap: nearly half of children in its report had never discussed AI safety with their parents. Three-quarters said their school had discussed which AI they could or could not use, while just over half said they had been taught how to use AI safely. The landing page does not provide enough sample detail to generalize those percentages to every school or family. The practical lesson is narrower and useful: do not assume a child has received consistent guidance elsewhere.

Open with listening, not a lecture

Choose an ordinary moment rather than waiting for a rule violation. A short conversation in the car, while doing homework or when a news story raises the subject can feel less threatening than a formal “meeting.” Your first goal is to learn what is happening.

  1. Ask what tools are available. Try, “Have you used a chatbot or seen one in a school app?” Ask whether the child uses it alone, with friends or with an adult.
  2. Ask about purpose. Find out whether the tool is being used to explain a difficult idea, brainstorm, write, role-play, make images or talk when the child feels lonely. Different purposes require different boundaries.
  3. Ask about the experience. “What do you like about it?” and “Has it ever said something creepy, confusing, upsetting or obviously wrong?” Keep your tone interested. A child who expects punishment may hide a concerning interaction.
  4. Look at one example together when appropriate. Invite the child to show an answer, prompt or conversation without demanding access to every private exchange. Discuss which parts seem useful and which need checking.
  5. Practice checking. For schoolwork, ask the child to explain what they already understand, then compare the chatbot’s answer with a teacher’s material, a library source, a doctor or another reliable authority as appropriate. Ask, “How could we verify this?”
  6. Set boundaries collaboratively. Agree on acceptable purposes, privacy rules, adult involvement and times when chatbots are off limits. Explain that boundaries can change as the child’s age, needs and the service change.
  7. Schedule another check-in. A single talk cannot cover every new feature or situation. Revisit the agreement after a school assignment, a software change or any interaction that leaves the child uneasy.

UNICEF Parenting describes privacy as an ongoing family practice: “Supporting children’s privacy involves both practical steps and ongoing conversations.” That approach also applies to accuracy, emotional reliance and changing features.

Explain what a chatbot is—and what it is not

A chatbot can produce fluent, friendly language without thinking or feeling as a person does. A warm tone, a confident answer or apparent agreement is not evidence of understanding, consciousness or good judgment. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) warns that chatbot responses can be incorrect or harmful; its parent guidance recommends discussing how human relationships differ from interactions with AI (AAP guidance, updated August 27, 2025).

Give children a simple rule: treat an answer as a suggestion to examine, not as an authority. The risk is higher when the question involves health, safety, money, sexuality, law, bullying or another person’s private information. For those subjects, a trusted adult and an appropriate professional or authoritative source should be involved.

Chatbots may also agree too readily or produce misleading material that sounds plausible. Ask the child to notice missing sources, sweeping claims, pressure to keep a secret and advice that conflicts with what a trusted adult has said. If an answer could affect someone’s wellbeing, pause before acting on it.

Teach privacy with concrete examples

Children often understand “be careful online” better when it is translated into specific information. Explain that a chatbot should not receive:

  • full name combined with an address, phone number or precise location;
  • school name, class schedule, daily routines or information that reveals when nobody is home;
  • passwords, account recovery codes, financial details or identity-document numbers;
  • private details about friends, classmates or family members;
  • photos, recordings or documents that identify a child or someone else without permission;
  • sensitive health, relationship, sexual or emotional information that the child would not want shared beyond the conversation.

Explain that deleting a chat later may not erase every copy or prevent a service from retaining or using data under its policies. Settings can reduce exposure, but they cannot guarantee confidentiality or safety. Review the service’s privacy and data controls together, using the current wording in the account, and make a plan for what to do if sensitive information has already been entered.

Children should know they can tell you about a mistake without losing access to help. If a chatbot asks for identifying details, urges secrecy or requests an image, the child should stop and involve a trusted adult.

Use age and purpose to set boundaries

Age recommendations are not laws or a universal regulatory threshold. The following table summarizes Common Sense Media’s guidance, reviewed or updated June 8, 2026. Treat it as one organization’s recommendation and adapt it to a child’s development, circumstances, school expectations and the specific service.

Child’s age Common Sense Media recommendation What the family should emphasize
5 and under No AI chatbots Keep interaction with conversational systems out of the child’s routine and focus on human conversation and age-appropriate activities.
6–12 Limited use alongside a parent or caregiver Use together, keep sessions purposeful and check answers and privacy choices in real time.
13 and older Supervised use for homework and creativity Discuss independent judgment, source checking, privacy and whether use is displacing sleep, school, friends or hobbies.
Under 18, any age band No AI for emotional support, mental-health advice or “friendship” Direct emotional and mental-health needs to people who can listen, protect the child and provide qualified care.

The AAP takes a family-engagement approach rather than giving a single age cut-off: listen to learn, explain the difference between human relationships and AI, protect privacy, stay tuned in and seek medical advice if a child becomes withdrawn and prefers chatbot interaction (AAP guidance). Common Sense Media’s recommendations should therefore be used as a planning reference, not presented to a child as a legal requirement.

Separate learning and creativity from companionship

A family may allow a teenager to use a chatbot to brainstorm a story while prohibiting it as a confidant. State the difference plainly. Learning and creative use still require supervision appropriate to the child and checking of important claims; companionship and emotional support create a different risk because a system can sound available without being able to care, protect or take responsibility.

For homework, ask the child to show the question they started with, what they already knew and how they evaluated the response. Common Sense Media offers a concise self-check: “Is this AI helping me learn, or just helping me finish?” If the chatbot is doing the thinking, writing or problem-solving that the assignment is meant to develop, change the process rather than simply hiding the use.

For creative projects, discuss consent and ownership of other people’s names, images and stories. Keep identifying details out of prompts, and do not use a friend’s private information as raw material. Follow the school’s rules for disclosure and permitted tools; a school policy may be stricter than a family’s general agreement.

Recognize excessive use or emotional reliance

One long session does not prove a problem. Look for a pattern and for changes in the child’s functioning. UNICEF Parenting and the AAP identify warning signs that merit a calm conversation:

  • distress, anger or panic when the child is asked to stop;
  • secrecy about the chatbot, its prompts or the amount of time spent using it;
  • increasing anxiety, confusion or upset after conversations;
  • reliance on the chatbot for reassurance, emotional support or decisions;
  • withdrawing from family or preferring chatbot interaction to people;
  • sleep, schoolwork, friendships, physical activity or hobbies being displaced.

Start with observations rather than accusations: “I have noticed you are staying up to chat and skipping the things you usually enjoy. What is the chatbot doing for you?” Listen for loneliness, bullying, academic pressure or another need that the chatbot is temporarily masking.

Then use a shared plan: pause or reduce access, move use to a common area, restore sleep and offline activities, and identify a person the child can contact. If the child is withdrawn and prefers chatbot interaction, the AAP advises talking with the child’s doctor. Do not frame professional help as punishment for using AI.

What to use instead of AI for emotional support

A chatbot cannot replace a trusted adult, school counselor, qualified clinician or emergency service. Help the child name several real people they could approach—parent or caregiver, another relative, teacher, coach, school counselor or health professional—and decide how to reach them when feelings become intense.

For immediate danger, threats, self-harm concerns or abuse, stay with the child when possible and contact appropriate local emergency or crisis services. A chatbot should not be the only place a child discloses a crisis. If the child is reluctant to speak, offer choices: talking while walking, writing a note, asking a counselor together or having another trusted adult start the conversation.

Address image abuse and other serious risks without panic

Children also need to know that AI can be used to create harmful material about real people. A June 2026 UNICEF Innocenti brief estimates that at least 1.2 million children in 11 surveyed countries had fake sexual images or videos created using AI within one year. The figure is an estimate for those surveyed countries and period, not a global count.

If a child says an image, message or threat involving them or a friend exists, believe the disclosure, preserve relevant evidence safely, avoid forwarding the material and involve a trusted adult and the appropriate school, platform or child-protection authority. Do not ask the child to investigate alone or negotiate with whoever is threatening them. The child is not responsible for material created or shared without consent.

UNICEF’s policy brief, “When AI becomes a friend” (June 2026), discusses child-rights risks and a regulatory overview current as of May 2026. Families should use local professional advice for reporting and protection steps because procedures differ by country.

Make a family agreement that can change

Write a short agreement in language the child helped create. Include:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Purpose: which learning or creative tasks are acceptable and which uses are not;
  • People: who must be present or available for younger children and whom to contact with a worrying answer;
  • Privacy: information that never goes into a chatbot and how settings will be reviewed;
  • Checking: when an answer must be compared with a teacher, official source, doctor or another qualified person;
  • Time and place: device-free periods for sleep, meals, schoolwork that requires independent effort and family activities;
  • Exit plan: what the child should do if the chatbot asks for secrecy, personal data, an image or continued conversation.

Review the agreement after a new service feature, a school policy change or a difficult interaction. Ask regularly, “Is this helping you learn, or is it taking over something you need from people?” Keep the invitation to talk open even when the child has broken a rule.

Keep expectations realistic

Evidence about children’s AI use is still sparse and adoption is moving faster than research, as UNICEF Innocenti notes. No setting can make a chatbot perfectly private, accurate or safe, and no age label can account for every child’s development or circumstance. The durable protection is a combination of adult involvement, concrete privacy habits, answer checking, clear limits and strong human relationships.

For additional parent-focused guidance, see the UNICEF Parenting interview with Ying Xu, the Common Sense Media age-and-stage guidance, and the UNICEF Innocenti June 2026 snapshot. Common Sense Media’s broader 2026 findings are available in its report on teens, tweens and AI.
