How to Talk to Children About Using AI Safely

Start with the child’s curiosity, not a lecture or a ban. Ask what they have seen or tried, explain that AI can recognize patterns and generate responses without thinking or feeling like a person, and explore one low-stakes example together. Then agree on practical rules for privacy, fact-checking, schoolwork, supervision and getting human help.

AI already appears in devices and apps children may not recognize as AI. UNICEF’s guidance notes that even preschoolers can understand simple ideas about what AI can and cannot do. A continuing, age-appropriate conversation is more useful than a one-time warning. See UNICEF’s parenting guidance on talking about AI for its child-led approach.

Begin with what your child has noticed

Choose a calm moment and invite the child to lead. You might ask, “What have you seen that seems like AI?” or “What are you curious about?” A child may mention a voice assistant, an image filter, an in-game character, an autocomplete tool or a homework app rather than a chatbot. Starting with a familiar example makes the subject concrete and avoids turning the conversation into a technical lesson.

Ying Xu, an assistant professor of AI in learning and education at Harvard University, told UNICEF that following a child’s curiosity creates a natural, age-appropriate starting point. Listen for the child’s actual experience: what the system did, what they expected it to do and whether anything surprised or worried them. Ask open questions before offering rules.

Use a familiar explanation

Explain that artificial intelligence is software trained to find patterns in information and produce an output such as words, a recommendation, an image or a spoken reply. A smart speaker can recognize a request; a robot vacuum can map a room; a writing tool can predict text. These systems can be useful, but they do not have human feelings, consciousness or personal judgment. They can be wrong, reflect biases in their data and sound confident when an answer is unsupported.

Explore one answer together

If the child is old enough and the service is appropriate, ask a harmless question together, such as for an explanation of a science term or ideas for a story. Look at the response line by line. Which part seems useful? Which part is unclear? What could be inaccurate? How might you check it? The goal is to model curiosity and verification, not to prove that every answer is bad.

Match access and supervision to age and maturity

Age is one factor, not a complete safety test. Consider the child’s ability to understand uncertainty, follow privacy rules, handle upsetting material, stop when asked and tell an adult about a problem. Common Sense Media’s current age guide makes the recommendations below; they are editorial guidance, not legal requirements or a universal clinical standard. Its guidance also advises against using chatbots for emotional support, mental-health advice or simulated friendship for anyone under 18.

Child’s age Common Sense Media recommendation What an adult should do Reasonable purpose
5 and under No chatbot use Keep interactions with AI-mediated toys or devices brief, visible and adult-controlled; explain the technology without handing over a conversational relationship. Notice and discuss AI in everyday devices.
6–12 Limited use alongside a parent or caregiver Choose the question, stay present, review the output and stop if content or behavior is confusing or upsetting. Low-stakes curiosity, guided creativity and short learning activities.
13 and up Supervised homework or creative use Set expectations for privacy, attribution, checking claims and school rules; review use periodically rather than assuming maturity. Brainstorming, explanations, drafting and problem-solving that the student can explain independently.
Under 18, all ages No chatbot use for emotional support, mental-health advice or “friendship” Make clear that worries, crises and relationship needs belong with trusted people and qualified professionals. Human conversation and appropriate services, not an AI substitute.

Common Sense Media cites concerns including unsafe or inaccurate content, biased or overly agreeable outputs, loss of productive struggle and missed mental-health warning signs. Revisit the arrangement as the child develops, the tool changes or a new use case appears. UNESCO’s Guidance for generative AI in education and research, published 7 September 2023 and updated on its page 16 January 2026, likewise emphasizes age-appropriate use, privacy safeguards and human-centered oversight.

A repeatable conversation you can use

Use the following sequence for a first talk, then repeat the relevant parts whenever the child starts a new tool or has a concerning experience.

  1. Notice and invite

Ask what the child has encountered, what they used it for and what they liked or disliked. Avoid opening only with “Don’t cheat.” UNICEF cautions that a punishment-first approach can close the conversation, while school misuse may signal confusion, disengagement or difficulty with the work.

  2. Explain capabilities and limits

Say that AI generates an answer from patterns; it does not automatically know whether the answer is true, fair or suitable. Explain that a fluent tone is not proof. If a system says it has feelings, memories or a personal relationship, treat that as generated language rather than evidence of a human-like inner life.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  3. Try a low-stakes example

Work through one question together. Ask the child to predict what a good answer should include, compare that expectation with the output and identify a way to verify it. This turns safety from an abstract warning into a habit of inspection.

  4. Agree on a pause-before-sharing rule

Tell the child to stop before entering information about themselves or someone else. Decide which categories always require an adult’s permission, and practice closing the tool when the child is unsure.

  5. Connect use to learning

For schoolwork, ask the child to explain the idea in their own words, describe what they tried before using AI and point out any part of the output they question. A useful test from Common Sense Media is: “Is this AI helping me learn, or just helping me finish?”

  6. Set a help route

Name the adults the child can approach—a parent, caregiver, teacher, counselor or another trusted person—and say exactly what to do if the tool produces frightening content, requests private information or encourages secrecy. Make asking for help a success, not a punishment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  7. Schedule a check-in

Revisit the rules after a week, at the start of a school project or whenever the child adopts a new app. Ask what changed, whether the tool behaved as expected and whether the agreed boundaries still fit.

Teach privacy as a pause, not a panic

Children may disclose sensitive information in an ordinary conversation about feelings, friendships or health without realizing its value. Explain that a name is not the only identifying detail. A school, team, neighborhood, daily route, class schedule, usernames, photos, family conflict, medical condition, disability, passwords and a friend’s private story can all make someone identifiable or vulnerable when combined.

A simple decision test

  • Could this identify me or another person? Consider names, school, location, routines, images and account details.
  • Would I be comfortable if a teacher or relative saw it? If not, do not enter it without an adult reviewing the situation.
  • Is it sensitive even without a name? Feelings, health information, family problems and relationship details deserve the same caution.
  • Does the service need it? Remove unnecessary details and use a general example instead.

Review the service’s privacy settings and data practices with the child. Show where conversation history, personalization, voice recordings or sharing controls appear, and explain that settings can change. UNICEF stresses that safe defaults and data minimization are also responsibilities of technology companies and policymakers; families should not be expected to solve every privacy risk alone. If a child has already shared something sensitive, stay calm, record what happened, change credentials when relevant, use the service’s deletion or reporting controls and tell a trusted adult.

Make checking claims part of using AI

Teach children to treat an AI response as a starting point. For a factual question, compare it with a reliable book, teacher-provided material, library source or official organization. Check dates, names, calculations, quotations and links rather than accepting a polished paragraph. For health, safety, legal or emergency questions, stop using the chatbot as the decision-maker and ask a qualified adult or professional.

Use AI to support reasoning

For homework, productive uses include asking for a hint, requesting a concept in simpler language, generating practice questions or receiving feedback on a draft the student wrote. The child should be able to explain the result without the tool open. Common Sense Media’s age guidance summarizes evidence reviewed by Stanford’s SCALE Initiative: systems that give hints, ask questions and help students work through problems show better learning outcomes than systems that simply return finished answers. This comparison is presented as Common Sense Media’s account of that review, not as a guarantee for every product or assignment.

Keep authorship and school rules clear

Have the child record what they asked, what the tool contributed and what they changed. Some teachers permit brainstorming but prohibit generated text in a final submission; others require disclosure or use approved systems only. A child who can describe their process is better prepared to follow the teacher’s expectations and spot an incorrect suggestion.

Protect emotional well-being and human relationships

AI should not replace sleep, schoolwork, friends, hobbies, family conversation or professional care. Chatbots can imitate warmth and agreement, but they cannot take responsibility for a child’s safety or recognize every crisis. Common Sense Media reports that in its tests, chatbots missed serious mental-health warning signs unless the danger was expressed plainly and sometimes encouraged risky thinking or behavior. Those are findings from its tests, not a clinical evaluation of every chatbot.

Warning signs worth discussing

  • The child becomes secretive about conversations or hides the amount of time spent using the tool.
  • They show increased anxiety, distress or anger when asked to stop.
  • They turn to AI for emotional support instead of trusted people, or describe it as a best friend or sole confidant.
  • Use crowds out sleep, schoolwork, friends, exercise or hobbies.
  • The child repeats alarming advice, believes the system is always right or is reluctant to question it.

Respond with gentle, specific questions: “What did it say?” “How did that make you feel?” and “Who else could help us check this?” Set a simple boundary, reduce access if necessary and increase human contact. If a child may be in immediate danger or talks about self-harm, contact emergency services or a qualified crisis professional in your area rather than relying on an AI conversation.

Coordinate with your child’s school

Ask the school how students are expected to use AI, not only whether it is “allowed.” Useful questions include:

  • Which tools, if any, are approved for each age group?
  • What information must never be entered, and how are student accounts and conversation data handled?
  • When is AI support acceptable for brainstorming, tutoring, translation or accessibility?
  • How should students disclose assistance, and what counts as academic misconduct?
  • How does the school teach students to verify claims and recognize bias?
  • What is the process for reporting unsafe content, harassment, privacy incidents or a student’s distress?

Share the family’s rules with teachers and ask for examples of permitted prompts. UNESCO’s guidance calls for coherent educational policy, privacy protection, age-appropriate design and human validation; a consistent message between home and school makes those principles practical. If your child is struggling, discuss the underlying coursework or support need rather than treating an AI-generated answer as the only problem.

Write a short family agreement

A written agreement helps children remember expectations when an adult is not beside them. Keep it short enough to read before opening a tool.

  • We ask before using a new AI service.
  • We do not enter passwords, precise locations, private images or sensitive information about ourselves or others.
  • We check important claims with a trusted source or person.
  • We use AI to practice, plan and understand—not to submit work we cannot explain.
  • We follow the school’s rules and disclose assistance when required.
  • We never use a chatbot as a friend, therapist or emergency service.
  • We stop and tell a trusted adult if content is frightening, sexual, hateful, unsafe or secretive.
  • We protect time for sleep, relationships, school and offline interests.

Put the agreement somewhere accessible, then revise it when the child gains independence. Supervision can shift from sitting beside a younger child to reviewing examples and check-ins with a teenager, but the route to human help should remain explicit.

If something goes wrong

The tool gives a false or harmful answer

Save the response if it is needed for reporting, explain why it is unreliable, correct the information using a trusted source and report the output through the service’s safety channel. Ask what clue the child could use next time to question a similar answer.

The child shares private information

Do not shame them. Identify exactly what was shared, review account and privacy controls, delete the conversation where possible, change passwords if credentials were exposed and contact the school or service when another child’s information is involved.

The child is relying on AI emotionally

Listen before restricting access. Ask what the child gets from the interaction, reconnect them with a trusted person and set a clear limit on chatbot use. For persistent distress, seek a qualified mental-health professional; do not ask the chatbot to assess or treat the child.

What children and families report about AI conversations

Common Sense Media’s 2026 survey summary, covering more than 1,000 U.S. children ages 9–17, reports the following findings. They describe that U.S. sample and should not be generalized to every country or age group.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Finding Reported result
School had discussed which AI students could and could not use Three-quarters of respondents
Had been taught how to use AI safely Just over half
Had never discussed AI safety with parents Nearly half

That gap is a reason to start a low-pressure conversation even if your child has not asked for one. The free Common Sense Media and Day of AI family AI literacy toolkit offers videos, interactive activities, conversation cards and family guides covering privacy, fairness, responsibility and school use.
