The safest approach is an ongoing, calm conversation—not a one-time warning. Learn how your child plays and communicates, explain grooming in simple non-blaming language, agree on privacy and reporting rules, and make it clear they can tell you anything without losing your support. If a child discloses a concern, listen, thank them, say it is not their fault, preserve evidence safely, and report through the appropriate service for your country.
Start with your child’s online life
Begin with curiosity rather than suspicion. Ask your child to show you a favorite game, explain what players do, and describe how people communicate. NCMEC’s gaming guidance recommends learning about the games and contacts that matter to a child before discussing risks.

- “Who do you usually play with, and how do you know them?”
- “What usernames do you recognize?”
- “What communication features does this game have—voice, text, direct messages or friend requests?”
- “Has anyone asked for your full name, school, phone number, photos or other personal details?”
- “What do you do when someone is rude, sexual or makes you uncomfortable?”
Keep the first conversation short enough that it feels manageable. Return to the subject regularly, especially when your child starts a new game, joins a new server or begins using a new messaging app. Repeated invitations to talk are important because children may not recognize grooming immediately or disclose an uncomfortable interaction at once.

How do I talk to my child about online grooming?
Explain grooming as a pattern in which an older person or another exploiter builds trust or emotional dependence in order to obtain sexual contact, images, money or an offline meeting. It can happen in games, social networks, messaging apps and other online spaces. NCMEC describes online enticement tactics that include sexual conversation or role-play, requests for sexual images, pretending to be a peer, compliments and shared interests, gifts or favors, secrecy and pressure to meet. Australia’s eSafety Commissioner also warns that contact may move across several services or from a public game chat into a private messaging app.

Use examples a child can understand: someone may act like a friend, romantic partner, mentor or especially generous teammate; ask personal questions; offer game items or other gifts; insist that the relationship remain secret; or make the child feel guilty for refusing. The interaction can feel flattering or affectionate as well as frightening. A child may feel loyalty, confusion, embarrassment or fear and still not call it grooming. Responsibility always belongs to the person exploiting the child.
Give your child language they can remember:
- “You can tell me even if you think you made a mistake.”
- “You will not be in trouble for asking for help.”
- “You can say no to anything that makes you uncomfortable, even if you know the person.”
- “You can stop replying, block the account and come to me.”
NCMEC puts the principle plainly: “Remember, it is not the child who is at fault.” It also says, “You have the right to say ‘NO’ to anyone who talks about or asks you to do something that makes you uncomfortable, even if it’s someone you know.”
Use age-appropriate language
Young children generally need short, concrete rules: do not share your name, school, address, passwords or pictures; stay with approved friends and family; and tell an adult when a message feels strange. Avoid frightening details they cannot use. With preteens, explain that a person online can pretend to be younger, and that a request to keep a chat secret is a reason to pause and tell you. Teens can discuss consent, pressure, intimate images, moving between platforms, and the difference between an online friend and someone whose identity they have independently verified offline.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsAsk open questions rather than testing the child: “How did that message make you feel?” “What do you think the person wanted?” and “What would make it easier to leave the chat?” Do not insist that the child hand over every conversation as proof. The goal is to make disclosure easier, while still agreeing on reasonable family checks.
How can I keep my child safe while gaming online?
Set privacy and contact boundaries together
Open the game or app with your child and review its current privacy, friend and communication controls. Labels and menus vary by platform, so have the child show you where voice chat, direct messages, friend requests, blocking and reporting are located. Practice on a harmless account so the steps are familiar before a problem occurs.

- Keep full name, address, school, phone number, passwords and payment details private.
- Use a screen name that does not reveal a child’s real identity, school or location.
- Be cautious when a player asks to move a conversation from game chat to a private messaging service.
- Block or unfriend anyone who ignores a boundary, sexualizes conversation or demands secrecy.
- Use the platform’s report function for suspected exploitation, threats, sexual requests or account scams.
Explain that a friendly voice, shared game interests or a familiar username does not prove that someone is the age or identity they claim. Do not frame every online friend as dangerous; instead, teach your child to pause when a contact asks for information, images, secrecy, money or an offline meeting.
Compare safety needs across games and apps
There is no single “safe gaming” setting. Consider how much contact a service allows, whether strangers can search for or message a child, whether voice and text chats are recorded, and how easily a conversation can move to another app. A game with only approved contacts presents a different decision from one with open public chat. Recheck these features after updates, when a child joins a new server, or when they add a companion messaging app.

Ask which controls feel protective and which make it harder to play with known friends. Explain that privacy settings reduce unwanted contact but cannot identify every unsafe person or stop a determined user from attempting contact. Keep the reporting route visible and practice leaving a conversation.
Match independence to age
For younger children, eSafety recommends keeping online connections to close friends or family and using age-appropriate games. As children gain independence, discuss why they connect with people they have not met offline, what information they can withhold and what to do when trust is tested.
If an older child wants to meet an online contact, eSafety recommends parental permission, a public daytime location and accompaniment by a trusted adult. A child should never be pressured into meeting alone, keeping the meeting secret or changing the plan at the last minute.

Use controls as support, not surveillance
NSPCC advises parents to keep up with the apps and games children use, consider parental controls and place gaming devices or computers in shared spaces where practical. Controls can limit contacts, purchases or screen time, but they cannot guarantee that grooming will not occur. A hidden account or a monitoring alert is not a substitute for a child who feels safe seeking help. Agree in advance what you will check, why you are checking it and how your child can regain privacy as they demonstrate safe judgment.
Cover money, scams and content
Gaming risks are broader than grooming. Children may encounter strangers, requests for personal information or sexual images, scams aimed at passwords or payment details, inappropriate content and purchases they do not realize cost real money. Review parental purchase approvals, explain that virtual currency still has a price, and teach children never to share passwords or verification codes—even with someone claiming to be a moderator or game employee.
Warning signs to discuss carefully
No single behavior proves grooming. A gentle check-in is warranted when several changes appear together or when a child seems distressed.
Interaction clues
- A contact asks the child to keep the relationship or conversations secret.
- The same person repeatedly reaches out through different apps or accounts.
- Someone asks who is nearby, where the child lives or goes to school, or for other identifying details.
- Compliments focus on the child’s body or become sexual.
- The person offers gifts, game items, money or favors and expects something in return.
- They request sexual conversation, role-play or images, pressure the child to meet, or use threats and guilt when the child resists.
Changes at home
NSPCC lists secrecy, distress, withdrawal, unexplained gifts, major changes in time spent online and upset when unable to get online as possible signs. Each can have many other explanations—friendship problems, ordinary adolescence, stress or a different online conflict—so avoid accusations. Ask what has changed, listen to the answer and keep the conversation open.
What should I do if my child is being groomed online?
- Stay calm and listen. Let the child speak in their own words. Do not interrogate, demand a perfect timeline or react with anger that could make future disclosure feel unsafe.
- Thank them for telling you. Say clearly that you believe them, that the exploitation is not their fault and that they are not in trouble.
- Explain the next steps. Tell the child what you will do, which adults or services may need to be involved and what information you will share. Keep them updated rather than making unexplained decisions.
- Protect immediate safety. If there is an imminent threat, an arranged meeting, a current risk of physical harm or a demand for urgent payment, contact your local emergency number. Do not allow a child to meet the contact alone.
- Preserve useful information safely. Record usernames, profile links, dates, messages and platform names. Do not encourage the child to continue chatting to collect evidence.
- Block and report through the platform. Use the game or app’s report and block tools after saving the information needed for a report.
- Report to the appropriate authority. Use the route for your country listed below, and seek professional child-protection support.
Do not confront the alleged abuser yourself. NSPCC advises reporting concerns promptly and avoiding direct confrontation. Do not download, forward, comment on or share sexual images of a child. Sharing such material can further harm the child and may be illegal; use the relevant reporting service instead.

If an account, password or payment detail was exposed
Tell the child that reporting a mistake is the priority, not punishment. Change a compromised password, beginning with the affected account and then any other account that reused it. Check whether payment information was shared and contact the relevant provider if an unauthorized purchase appears. Keep a note of what happened, when it happened and which accounts were involved. Do not negotiate with someone demanding money or more images; threats and escalating demands are reasons to seek authority support.
Support after the report
A report may not produce an immediate visible result. Continue checking in without making the child repeat the story unnecessarily. Preserve ordinary routines, offer a trusted adult besides the primary caregiver, and ask the reporting service or a child-protection professional what follow-up is appropriate. If the child wants to stop using one game, listen to the reason and help them make a safe, informed choice rather than presenting withdrawal as the only solution.

Build a family safety routine
Before a child joins a new game
- Check the game’s age rating and communication features.
- Decide who may send friend requests or direct messages.
- Set purchase approvals and explain how virtual items are charged.
- Identify where the block and report controls are.
- Agree on a private family signal the child can use to ask for help quickly.
During regular check-ins
- Ask what was fun, uncomfortable or confusing online this week.
- Invite the child to show new contacts, servers or apps without assuming wrongdoing.
- Revisit what information stays private and when to leave a chat.
- Adjust controls as the child’s age, game choices and independence change.
When a child makes a mistake
Respond to the behavior without threatening to remove every device. If a child clicked a scam link, shared a password or replied to a sexual request, focus first on safety: change compromised passwords, report the account, preserve relevant details and involve the appropriate authority. A calm response makes it more likely the child will disclose the next problem early.
Best Value
Common mistakes caregivers should avoid
- Blaming or shaming: Saying “Why did you answer?” can close the channel you need. Ask what happened and what support is needed now.
- Promising absolute secrecy: Explain that you will respect the child’s privacy but may need to involve a service or another safe adult to protect them.
- Confronting the suspected person: Direct contact can escalate risk, alert the person or interfere with a report.
- Forwarding explicit material: Do not circulate images of a child, even to show relatives or friends. Follow the reporting service’s instructions.
- Relying only on an app or device: Filters and controls can help with boundaries, but they cannot replace trust, supervision appropriate to age and open conversation.
- Treating every warning sign as proof: Changes in mood or screen use deserve a question, not an accusation.
What children should remember
A child does not have to prove that a contact is dangerous before ending the conversation. They can stop replying, leave a game, block the account, report the behavior and tell a trusted adult. No gift, friendship, rank, promise or threat creates an obligation to share information, images or an in-person meeting. The practical goal is not to eliminate every online risk; it is to give children knowledge, boundaries and a reliable path to help.
Frequently Asked Questions
How can I tell my child about grooming without frightening them?
Use calm, concrete examples: someone may pretend to be a peer, offer gifts, ask for secrecy or request images. Emphasize that the child is never to blame and can stop replying and ask for help. Revisit the conversation as games and apps change.
Should I ban online gaming if I am worried?
A ban is not a guaranteed safeguard and can make a child less willing to disclose problems. Review the game’s contacts, privacy and communication features, set age-appropriate boundaries and keep talking. If a specific contact is threatening or exploitative, block, report and seek authority support.
What should I save if my child receives a grooming message?
Note usernames, profile links, platform names, dates and relevant messages. Save information safely without encouraging further conversation. Do not download, forward or share sexual images of a child; use the appropriate reporting service.
Should my child meet someone they know only online?
Discuss the request with a caregiver first. eSafety recommends parental permission, a public daytime location and accompaniment by a trusted adult. A child should not meet alone, secretly or after a last-minute change of plan.
What if my child shared a password, image or payment detail?
Stay calm, thank them for telling you and focus on immediate safety. Change compromised passwords, check payment accounts, preserve relevant details, block and report the account, and contact the appropriate authority. Do not negotiate with threats or demands.
Where can I report online grooming?
Routes depend on location. In the United States, use NCMEC’s CyberTipline; in the United Kingdom, CEOP, local child-protection services or police; in Australia, follow police reporting information identified by eSafety. Elsewhere, contact local police, child-protection services or a national child-exploitation reporting service.

The Bottom Line
Keep the conversation open, teach children to protect personal information and use block/report tools, and respond to disclosure without blame. Controls can support these habits, but a trusted adult and a clear reporting plan are the strongest safeguards.
