You decide whether to share a changing understanding of your identity, when to share it, whom to tell and what words to use. There is no required announcement and no deadline. If a conversation could put your housing, income, physical safety, privacy or emotional support at risk, waiting and making a support plan first is a valid choice. When you do talk, share only what you want, choose a channel that feels safe, make a specific request if you have one, and allow the relationship time to adjust.
What “changing identity” can mean
People use this phrase in different ways. You may be recognizing a sexual orientation, gender identity, name or pronouns; moving away from an old label; or finding language that fits better than the words you used before. Some people know exactly which label they want. Others prefer a broad description, no label, or a simple statement that their understanding is evolving. A person can use different language with different people and can change that language later.

In LGBTQ+ contexts, sharing this information is often called coming out. It is not a single event that must happen with everyone. The Planned Parenthood explanation of coming out, the Human Rights Campaign’s guide to living authentically, and PFLAG’s 2024 identity guide all place the decision with the person sharing. You are allowed to tell one trusted friend, several relatives, nobody yet, or people in stages.

You also do not have to prove an identity, answer every question or promise that your wording will never change. A conversation can communicate what is true for you now without predicting how you will describe yourself in the future.

Decide whether this is a safe time to talk
Emotional readiness matters, but practical safety comes first. Before telling someone, consider what could happen if they reject the information, tell others, withdraw money or housing, monitor your devices, or become threatening. Planned Parenthood notes that loss of emotional or financial support and physical danger can be relevant considerations; PFLAG likewise recommends planning for a person to contact, somewhere to stay and another source of financial help when those risks are possible.
- Housing: Could you be forced to leave, lose access to a room or face unsafe conditions?
- Money and essentials: Do you depend on this person for food, tuition, health care, transport, immigration paperwork or other necessities?
- Physical safety: Has the person threatened violence, used violence, controlled you or reacted aggressively to LGBTQ+ topics?
- Privacy: Might they read your messages, post about you, contact your employer or school, or tell relatives without permission?
- Support: Who could stay with you, pick you up, provide a place to sleep or help you think through the next step?
- Timing: Are you about to travel with the person, sit an exam, start a shift, move house or depend on them for an immediate decision?
If the answers raise concern, you can postpone the conversation, disclose only to a safer person, or seek local support before saying anything. Waiting is not dishonesty or failure; it can be an intentional safety decision. If you are dependent on the person you plan to tell, speak privately with a trusted adult, counselor, LGBTQ+ service or domestic-abuse service that understands your location and circumstances. Do not rely on a plan that assumes the other person will respond well.
Choose whom to tell, and in what order
Start with the person most likely to respect your boundaries, not necessarily the person you feel most obligated to inform. A supportive friend can help you rehearse, accompany you, or be available afterward. You can tell relatives one at a time rather than making a group announcement. You can also decide that a particular person does not need to know.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAsk yourself what you want from each conversation. You might want emotional support, a practical change such as a name or pronoun, confidentiality, an introduction to resources, or simply to stop hiding an important part of your life. Different people may receive different information and requests.
Pick a method that matches your needs
There is no morally superior format. PFLAG describes conversation and written messages as valid options, and the Human Rights Campaign notes that people use different ways to communicate. Compare the choices by safety, privacy, control and the kind of response you want.

| Method | Useful when | Advantages | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Face-to-face | You feel physically safe and want immediate dialogue. | You can read body language, answer questions and show warmth. | A strong reaction can feel intense; arrange an exit and a supportive contact. |
| Phone or video call | You want conversation without sharing the same physical space. | You can end the call quickly and control where you are. | Video may reveal your location; a phone call can still be overheard. |
| Text or email | You need time to compose your words or want a written record. | You control the message and the pace; the recipient can reread it. | Messages can be forwarded or shown to others, and tone may be misunderstood. |
| Letter or card | You want a deliberate, personal message without real-time pressure. | You can explain boundaries clearly and give the reader time. | Mail can be opened by someone else; you may wait longer for a reply. |
| Small group or family meeting | Several people need the same information and the setting is safe. | You do not have to repeat the explanation. | It is harder to control side conversations and individual reactions. |
Check digital privacy before sending anything sensitive. Use an account and device the recipient cannot access, review message previews and shared cloud accounts, and avoid sending a message when you cannot safely leave or silence notifications. These steps are especially important if someone has previously monitored your communications.
Build a conversation you can manage
You do not need a perfect speech. A short, clear structure helps you keep control when emotions rise.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Open with the purpose. Say that you want to share something about how you understand yourself. For example: “There’s something about how I understand myself that I want to share.” This is a writer-created example, not a required formula.
- Name what is true now. Use the label, description or uncertainty that feels accurate. You can say, “I’m using the word bisexual,” “I’m nonbinary,” “I’m questioning,” or “My understanding of my gender is changing, and I’m still finding the words.”
- Say only what you want to disclose. You are not required to describe your body, relationships, medical care, sexual history or every step that led you here.
- Make a concrete request. Ask for a name or pronoun, confidentiality, a pause before questions, practical help, or time to adjust. A request gives the listener something useful to do.
- Set a boundary. Explain what is private, which questions are off limits and what you will do if the conversation becomes disrespectful.
- Leave room for a pause. You can end with, “You don’t have to respond perfectly right now. I’d like to come back to this after we’ve both had time.” A pause should give everyone breathing room, not create pressure for you to defend your identity.
Sample messages you can adapt
To a trusted friend: “I want to tell you something personal. I’m using the word queer for myself now. Please keep this between us, and ask me before sharing it with anyone.”
About a name or pronouns: “I’m asking people to call me Alex and use they/them pronouns. I know mistakes may happen; please correct yourself and keep practicing.”
When you are still exploring: “I’m questioning my sexual orientation. I’m telling you because I trust you, but I do not want advice or a label yet.”

By text when safety or composure matters: “I’m sharing this in writing so I can say it clearly. My understanding of my gender has changed, and I’m using the name Sam. Please read this privately. I’m not ready for a call tonight, but I can talk tomorrow if the conversation is respectful.”
Handle the first reaction without surrendering your boundaries
Reactions vary. A person may be affirming, surprised, quiet, confused, emotional or hostile. Their first response is information, not a verdict on your identity. You can end the conversation if you feel unsafe or if the discussion turns into insults, threats or an interrogation.
If they are supportive
Tell them what support would be useful rather than expecting them to guess. They might practice your name, read a reliable guide, accompany you to a community group or simply listen. Thank them for keeping the information private if confidentiality matters.
If they are surprised or need time
Give a specific next step: “Please use my name, and let’s talk again this weekend.” You can share a resource, but you do not have to become a teacher while you are also processing your own change. Their need for time does not permit repeated demands that you justify yourself.
If they ask intrusive questions
Answer only questions you genuinely want to answer. Try, “That’s private,” “I’m still working that out,” or “I’m willing to talk about what name to use, not about my body.” Redirecting is not evasion; it is a boundary.

If they reject, threaten or out you
Prioritize leaving the situation and contacting your support person. Save threatening messages if doing so is safe, and use local emergency, housing, crisis or domestic-abuse services when necessary. If you live with or rely on the person, do not announce a plan that could leave you stranded. You can stop replying, move the conversation to writing, block contacts, or revisit the subject only under conditions you choose.
If a family member or friend tells you about a changing identity
Your first job is care, not investigation. Belong To’s 2025 guide for parents and carers offers two useful principles: “The most important thing to remember is that you don’t need to know it all,” and “Keep the conversation going.” Those lines are guidance from the organization’s guide, not a personal quotation from an individual.
- Thank them for trusting you. Try “I’m glad you told me,” or “I love you no matter what.”
- Ask what support they want. “How can I support you?” is more useful than guessing.
- Confirm language. Ask which name, pronouns and terms they want you to use, and whether those preferences apply with everyone.
- Protect confidentiality. Do not tell relatives, post online or contact a school or workplace without permission, except where an immediate safety emergency requires action.
- Listen before explaining. Do not turn the first conversation into a debate about politics, religion, stereotypes or whether the person is certain.
- Repair mistakes. Apologize briefly, correct the word and continue. Lengthy guilt can force the person to comfort you.
- Learn privately. Read a reputable guide or speak with a support service rather than making the person answer every question.
A young person may need adults to protect housing, schooling, health care and privacy. Ask what information can be shared and with whom. If you are worried about safety, discuss that concern directly instead of assuming that disclosure to more adults is automatically helpful.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. After the conversation: make the change workable
Identity conversations often continue through ordinary routines. Agree on how to handle introductions, family gatherings, online profiles, school or work records and relatives who have not been told. Decide whether the person wants corrections made publicly or privately. A quiet correction may be safer in one setting; a clear correction may be important in another.
Expect language to take practice. If a name or pronoun changes again, treat that information as an update, not evidence that earlier disclosure was deceptive. Ask what wording is current and where it should be used. Do not make the person repeatedly announce changes to people who could have learned through a trusted channel.

Find support that fits your location and situation
PFLAG’s Be Yourself guide points readers toward local chapters and other support groups. Local LGBTQ+ centers, school or workplace counselors, health professionals and trusted community organizations may provide confidential help; verify their privacy policies and eligibility before sharing sensitive details.
Planned Parenthood offers guidance on talking with friends, coming out as a teen, and coming out as transgender or nonbinary. These pages can help you think through supportive people and comfort, but your circumstances determine whether their suggestions are safe to use.
Recommended Free Tools
Belong To’s 2025 guide for parents and carers describes a free, confidential family support service available across Ireland for families of LGBTQ+ young people. That geographic scope does not make it a worldwide service, and availability or contact details can change, so readers elsewhere should use services in their own country.
If you face immediate danger, contact emergency services in your country. If the risk is coercive control, homelessness or violence, seek a local service that can help you make a safety plan without requiring disclosure to an unsafe family member.
Keep the central rule in view
Disclosure is an option, not an obligation. The person whose identity is changing sets the pace, chooses the audience and decides what information remains private. A good conversation does not require certainty, a polished explanation or instant agreement. It requires enough safety to speak, clear boundaries about what is shared, and people willing to listen, learn and respect the words that fit now.
