For a sharp telephoto night photo, keep the phone steady until the camera finishes capturing, confirm which lens is in use, and focus on the subject. Then choose exposure for the scene: a longer Night mode capture can help with a still building or landscape, while a moving person or animal usually needs a shorter exposure to avoid motion blur.
Why zoomed-in phone photos get blurry at night
There are two different kinds of movement to account for. Camera shake happens when the phone shifts during capture; bracing it or using a tripod can help. Subject motion happens when a person, animal, or vehicle moves while the camera is collecting light. A steady phone cannot freeze that movement. A shorter exposure can, but it lets in less light, which may leave the photo darker or noisier.

Focus and lens choice matter too. A zoom number on screen does not prove the phone is using its physical telephoto camera: some phones switch camera modules automatically, or use a crop. Night mode also does not necessarily use the telephoto camera. The available lenses, stabilization, and controls vary by phone model.

Clean and steady the phone
Wipe the rear camera glass. For a static scene, brace the phone against a solid support or mount it in a phone tripod. A timer or remote shutter, if available, can help avoid a wobble from tapping the screen. Keep the phone still for the entire capture, not just when you press the shutter.

Check that the telephoto camera is selected
Start at the telephoto lens’s native optical framing when possible. If your camera app offers a manual lens selector, choose Tele. If it selects lenses automatically, check the preview and any lens indicator as you zoom; the app may change cameras. Consult your phone’s camera instructions for its specific behavior.
For example, Google says lens selection on Pixel phones can be automatic and documents manual selection on eligible models. Its current guidance lists Pixel 6 Pro, Pixel 7 Pro, Pixel 8 Pro, Pixel Fold, and Pixel 9 and later among devices with manual selection, but controls can differ by model and software version. A zoom value alone is not confirmation of which camera recorded the image.

Focus on the subject
If autofocus misses, tap the subject to focus where the app supports it. Avoid changing your distance after focusing. For distant night-sky subjects, use the phone maker’s night-sky guidance rather than assuming terrestrial focus advice applies. Google documents a Far focus setting for supported Pixel devices when the subject is more than 4 meters (13 feet) away; that instruction is specific to those devices and use cases.

Choose a capture mode based on movement
For a stationary building or landscape, try Night mode or a longer capture and hold the phone still until the app indicates it is finished. Apple says iPhone Night mode can take several seconds and advises holding the phone steady until capture completes. Google’s Pixel Camera Help notes that Long Exposure duration adapts to scene motion and depends on the focused item’s size and speed.

For a moving person or animal, do not simply maximize capture time: movement during a long exposure can blur the subject. If your camera app has manual controls, try a faster shutter and raise ISO only as much as needed, accepting that the image may become darker or noisier. Samsung says Pro mode on supported Galaxy phones exposes settings including shutter speed, ISO, exposure, focus, and white balance. There is no single shutter-speed setting that works for every phone, subject, or amount of movement.

Review several frames at full size
Take several pictures, then inspect them at full size. If the subject is blurred, consider whether the cause was phone movement, subject movement, missed focus, or digital zoom. Change one factor at a time—for example, add support, refocus, or shorten exposure—so you can see what improves the result.

What to expect from Night mode and telephoto lenses
Night mode is not a universal telephoto setting. Phone makers use different camera hardware and software, and a device may switch lenses as conditions or zoom change. Google’s Pixel specifications, for instance, list a 5x optical telephoto with optical and electronic stabilization for specified Pixel models; those are model-specific specifications, not a general feature of phones. Check your exact model’s camera documentation before relying on a particular lens or control.
