Chrome DevTools can capture the current viewport, an entire page, a selected rectangle, a single HTML element, page-loading states, or frames from a performance recording. Open DevTools with F12 or Ctrl+Shift+I (Windows/Linux) or Command+Option+I (macOS), then choose the workflow that matches what you need.
Choose the capture that matches your goal
| What you need | DevTools workflow | Important caveat |
|---|---|---|
| What is visible now | Device Mode → More options → Capture screenshot | Only the current viewport is included. |
| The complete page, including content below the fold | Device Mode → More options → Capture a full size screenshot | Set the viewport or device dimensions first. |
| A rectangular portion of the page | Command Menu → Capture area screenshot | DevTools must remain docked. |
| One DOM element | Elements panel → select the node → Command Menu → Capture node screenshot | Select the intended node in the DOM tree. |
| How the page looked while loading | Network panel → enable Screenshots → reload | Thumbnails represent points in the load process. |
| Frames during a performance recording | Performance panel → enable Screenshots → record | Images are tied to the recording timeline. |
The first four are save-a-view workflows. Network and Performance screenshots are diagnostic evidence: they help explain when a visual state appeared, not just preserve a final image.
Capture the visible viewport
- Open DevTools and click Toggle device toolbar (the phone-and-tablet icon), or press Ctrl+Shift+M on Windows/Linux or Command+Shift+M on macOS.
- Choose Responsive and enter the width and height you want, or select a device preset. Set the orientation and device scale options if they are relevant to your test.
- Open the Device toolbar’s More options menu.
- Choose Capture screenshot. Chrome downloads an image of the viewport currently shown in the emulated device.
Device Mode changes the browser’s simulated viewport and related signals; it is not the same as running the page on physical mobile hardware. If touch behavior, hardware sensors, fonts, GPU behavior, or an actual phone’s browser are part of the question, verify the result on a real device using Chrome’s remote-debugging workflow.
Take a full-page screenshot
A full-size capture includes content outside the visible viewport, which is useful for documenting long articles, landing pages, or complete test fixtures.
#1 Best Overall
- 14" diagonal, 1366x768 resolution, HD BrightView LED, Glossy NON-TOUCH Display
- Enable Device Mode and select Responsive or a device preset.
- Enter the viewport width and height that should govern the page layout. The resulting image uses this emulated viewport even though Chrome scrolls through content beyond it.
- Open More options in the Device toolbar.
- Click Capture a full size screenshot. Wait for the download to finish before changing tabs or closing DevTools.
Set the dimensions before capturing: changing them afterward produces a different responsive layout. Chrome’s documentation does not specify a universal maximum page height or file size. If an exceptionally long or script-heavy page fails, capture sections, reduce the page’s runtime complexity, or use an automated service rather than assuming a published numeric limit.
Capture only part of a webpage
Use the Command Menu when you need a rectangle rather than a viewport or DOM node.
- Keep DevTools docked to the side or bottom of the browser. Area capture does not work when DevTools is undocked.
- Open the Command Menu with Ctrl+Shift+P on Windows/Linux or Command+Shift+P on macOS.
- Type screenshot.
- Choose Capture area screenshot.
- Drag over the region to save. Release the pointer to create the image.
If the command is missing or the drag does nothing, dock DevTools and repeat the search. The area tool is for a screen rectangle; it does not understand CSS boundaries or automatically include off-screen content.
Screenshot a specific HTML element
- Open the Elements panel.
- Click the element in the DOM tree. Use the element picker if finding it visually is easier, then confirm that the highlighted node is the one you intend to export.
- Open the Command Menu with Ctrl+Shift+P (Windows/Linux) or Command+Shift+P (macOS).
- Type node and choose Capture node screenshot.
Chrome downloads an image of the selected node. Selecting a parent container instead of the visible component is a common source of unexpected whitespace or extra content, so check the highlighted outline before invoking the command.

See screenshots as a page loads
Network-panel screenshots answer “when did this visual state appear?” rather than “what does the final page look like?”
- Open the Network panel.
- Open Network settings (the gear icon) and enable Screenshots.
- Reload the page while the Network panel is open.
- Open the Screenshots tab above the request list. Select a thumbnail to inspect the page at that point and the network activity associated with it.
This is useful for diagnosing a late-rendering hero image, a layout shift, a consent dialog, or content that appears only after a request completes. It is not a replacement for a deterministic final screenshot.
Capture frames in a performance recording
- Open the Performance panel.
- Enable Screenshots in the capture settings.
- Start a recording, reproduce the interaction or load you want to study, and stop the recording.
- Hover over the timeline overview or select a frame in the Frames section to inspect the captured images.
Frame screenshots let you correlate visual changes with scripting, rendering, painting, and network events in the same recording. They are evidence for performance analysis, not a convenient way to export one polished page image.
Make captures reproducible
Fix the viewport and state
- Record the width, height, device preset, orientation, and zoom level used for every comparison.
- Use a fresh reload when testing load states. Cached resources can change which thumbnail appears first.
- Dismiss consent dialogs and overlays when the purpose is to compare page content; leave them visible when testing the user’s first visit.
- For dynamic pages, wait until fonts, images, and client-side data have rendered before using a final viewport or node capture.
Understand emulation limits
Device Mode is a desktop approximation of a mobile experience. It helps test responsive layout and viewport-dependent CSS, but it does not prove behavior on a particular physical phone. Use a real device when hardware-specific behavior matters.

Plan for unusually long pages
Full-size capture can be affected by the page’s length, memory use, fixed-position elements, canvas content, or continuously changing scripts. If one giant image is impractical, capture logical sections or use PDF output or an automated screenshot endpoint.
Troubleshooting Chrome screenshot problems
The full-page option is missing
Enable Device Mode first, then open its More options menu. The full-size command belongs to the Device toolbar, not the ordinary browser page menu.
Area capture will not start
Dock DevTools. Chrome does not support Capture area screenshot while DevTools is undocked. Reopen the Command Menu after docking and search for “screenshot” again.
The node image contains the wrong content
Return to Elements and verify the highlighted outline. A wrapper, hidden duplicate, or parent node may be selected. Select the smallest element that actually owns the visual you need.

The image shows a loading state
For a final image, wait for fonts, images, and data requests to finish, then capture from Device Mode. If you need to understand the transition, enable Network screenshots and inspect the thumbnails instead.
The mobile result does not match a phone
Check the viewport dimensions and orientation first. Then test on the physical device: emulation is an approximation, not hardware execution.
A very long page fails or looks stitched incorrectly
Remove continuously changing content, stop animations where practical, retry after the page settles, or capture smaller sections. Chrome does not publish one universal full-page dimension or file-size ceiling, so treat the failure as page- or environment-specific.

For repeatable captures in scripts or CI, ScreenshotNeo returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF from one request. It accepts consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf to Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
