Choose the authentication method the site accepts
ScreenshotOne documents three approaches for authenticated pages. The right one depends on how the target site authenticates and whether you can change its configuration. Its official authenticated-pages guide and options reference describe the available request options.

Send an authorization header
If the site accepts a token or basic authentication header, provide it with ScreenshotOne’s authorization option. For a site that expects a different header name, use the general headers option. Confirm the exact header name, value format, and token scope with the site’s configuration; a syntactically valid request cannot compensate for an invalid or insufficient credential.
Keep the credential on a server you control. Do not put a private token into browser-side code or publish a request URL containing it.

Allow access at the site you control
If header authentication is unsuitable and you administer the protected site, you can configure its authentication or firewall to allow ScreenshotOne’s servers through. This requires changes on the target site, and ScreenshotOne describes it as a complicated option. Check the service’s current guidance for the relevant server access configuration before changing a firewall. Do not apply this method to a site you do not control.
Pass cookies for a browser session
Cookie authentication works only when you have a valid session for the page and the site permits automation. ScreenshotOne notes that obtaining cookies may require writing your own sign-in code. After an authorized sign-in, identify the required cookie names and values along with their domain and path attributes, then pass them using the cookies option.

The options reference supports multiple cookies as repeated cookies parameters in an escaped query string. For credentials, a structured POST request with a JSON body may be easier to encode safely and less likely to put secrets in URL logs; ScreenshotOne’s reference documents POST JSON requests. Use only cookies you are authorized to use, and do not copy a live session cookie into examples, source control, or public logs.
Protect API keys and authentication data
A request needs a ScreenshotOne access_key, which its API-key guide says can be sent in a query string, JSON body, or X-Access-Key header. ScreenshotOne recommends HTTPS because HTTP does not encrypt API keys, authorization headers, cookies, or other sensitive request data in transit. Its getting-started documentation uses the HTTPS API endpoint.

- Store the API key and target-site credentials in environment variables or a secrets manager; do not commit them to source control.
- Avoid exposing unsigned screenshot URLs that contain the API key publicly.
- Prefer a protected server-side request when sending sensitive headers or cookies, and check application, proxy, and observability logs for accidental credential capture.
- Use credentials with only the access needed for the screenshot task, and rotate them if exposed.
Understand what happens to rendered content
ScreenshotOne says requests without caching, storage, or similar options are rendered and returned without being stored on its infrastructure. That is not an unconditional no-retention guarantee: a JSON response temporarily stores the screenshot to serve its URL, and rendered content may pass through temporary internal components such as queues or buffers. See its caching documentation when deciding whether the request and response pattern fits your data-handling requirements.
Troubleshoot failed or incorrect captures
- The result is a login page. The request may be missing the needed header or cookie, the credential may be expired, or the page may require a different sign-in flow. Verify the method against the site’s authentication design.
- The site returns an authorization error. Check that the token or cookie is valid, has access to the requested page, and is sent in the exact header or cookie format the site expects.
- Cookies work in a browser but not in the capture. Confirm the cookie’s domain and path apply to the requested URL, and that the session is still valid. Some sign-in flows may require your own code to obtain the cookie.
- The request is blocked despite valid credentials. The target site may block automation or restrict requests at its firewall. If you own the site, review its access configuration; do not attempt to evade restrictions on a site you do not administer.
- The API key or credential may be exposed. Remove it from public code and logs where possible, rotate it, and store the replacement in a protected environment variable or secrets manager.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a screenshot API get into someone else’s private account?
No. These methods require authorization from the site and valid credentials; they are not a way to bypass access controls.
