Use Selenium WebDriver to open a college webpage, wait until the content you need is visible, then call driver.save_screenshot("college-page.png"). It saves the current browser window as a PNG—not a guaranteed full-page image. To capture one part of the page, locate that element and call its screenshot() method.
The examples below use Python and Chrome. Replace the sample address with the exact public page you need, such as https://example.edu/admissions. The code is a general Selenium example, not a test against a particular Indian college website.

Set up Selenium and capture a college webpage
Install Selenium and make sure Chrome is available on the machine that will run the script. Selenium’s current Chrome guidance documents headless mode and notes that Chrome and ChromeDriver major versions must match. See the Selenium Chrome documentation for driver and browser guidance.

driver.quit()Selenium documents save_screenshot as saving the current window to PNG. Use a filename ending in .png; the Python WebDriver API says the method returns False if an I/O error occurs. Check the Python WebDriver API reference for the installed Selenium release.
Choose a wait that matches the page
driver.get() does not prove that a modern college site has finished rendering every asynchronous item. The example waits for a visible heading as a basic readiness signal. For a page where the important content is loaded later, replace h1 with a selector for that content or wait for another observable page-specific state. A fixed sleep may be too short on a slow run and unnecessarily long on a fast one.
Visible Chrome for debugging
To watch the browser while diagnosing a failure, remove options.add_argument("--headless=new"). The explicit viewport size still makes the captured window dimensions deliberate. Selenium’s Chrome documentation lists headless and other Chrome arguments; argument support can change, so check that documentation against your installed version.

Capture a single element instead of the window
If you need only a heading, notice, or other component, find it and call its screenshot method. The selector below is illustrative; college websites use different markup.

Know what the screenshot includes
- Window capture:
driver.save_screenshot(path)captures the current browser window. Do not treat it as a universal full-document screenshot method. - Element capture: an element’s
screenshot()method is useful when only one component matters. - Page longer than the viewport: the documented Python window screenshot captures the current window. The cited Selenium documentation does not establish a universal full-page capture API across drivers. If the entire long page is essential, verify a method supported by your browser and driver rather than assuming this call includes content below the viewport.
Handle errors and make runs repeatable
Screenshot file is missing or empty
- Confirm the output directory exists and the process has permission to write there. The example creates the directory before capture.
- Use a filename ending in
.pngand check the Boolean result ofsave_screenshot; the API documentsFalsefor an I/O error. - Keep the screenshot call inside the
tryblock and thedriver.quit()call infinallyso the browser is closed after a failure too.
Chrome fails to start
Check that Chrome and ChromeDriver have matching major versions, as required by Selenium’s Chrome guidance. Also verify that Chrome is installed and that the environment can launch it in the selected mode.

The screenshot is blank or misses content
Wait for an element that signals the specific content you need is visible. If a banner, timetable, or admissions panel appears asynchronously, waiting only for a generic page heading may not be enough. Use a selector that matches the target, and investigate whether the site requires an interaction or additional loading time.

Captures differ between runs
Set a deliberate window size and use the same browser configuration for each run. Dynamic content, rotating announcements, and page updates can still change what appears; Selenium’s screenshot call captures the page state present at capture time.
Use Selenium responsibly on college sites
Separate four questions: can you reach the page, does the particular site permit automated access, does the screenshot expose personal information, and may you reuse or republish the image? A publicly reachable page does not answer the other questions. Check the target institution’s own terms, privacy and copyright policies before automating access or publishing a capture.
India’s GIGW guidance addresses government website practices and calls for relevant policies. Its example website policies apply to the referenced government site; they are not a rule or a survey of every Indian college’s policies. The GIGW guidelines are useful context, but consult the college’s own terms for the site you plan to capture.

Minimize personal information in captures
A screenshot may preserve student, applicant, or staff information that was visible in the browser. Avoid unnecessary capture or disclosure, restrict access to stored images, and redact identifying details when feasible. India Code lists the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 as Act 22 of 2023, enacted on 11 August 2023; the Act provides for commencement by government notification, including different dates for different provisions. A PIB release reports notification of the Act and the Digital Personal Data Protection Rules, 2025 in November 2025. Those facts do not determine whether a specific capture, storage choice, or publication is lawful; consult current official notifications and obtain institutional authorization when needed. See the India Code text of the Act.
Do not treat robots.txt as permission
IETF RFC 9309 says robots.txt rules are not access authorization. Respecting or not encountering a robots.txt restriction does not settle permission under a college’s terms or other applicable requirements. Read RFC 9309 and the target site’s own policies.
