How to Take Screenshots of Hindi Webpages with Selenium and Chrome

For a screenshot of the visible Hindi webpage, use Selenium’s regular WebDriver screenshot method after the page and its fonts are ready. It saves the current browser window to a PNG. A full-page image needs a separate approach, such as Chrome DevTools Protocol (CDP) capture beyond the viewport or scrolling and stitching multiple screenshots.

Capture the visible page with Selenium

Install Selenium and make sure a compatible Chrome browser is available in the environment where the script runs. Current Selenium can manage driver setup, but behavior depends on the Selenium and Chrome versions and runtime. Replace the example URL with the Hindi page you want to capture.

from pathlib import Path
from selenium import webdriver
from selenium.webdriver.chrome.options import Options

options = Options()
options.add_argument("--headless") # Remove this line to use a visible browser.
options.add_argument("--window-size=1440,1200")

driver = webdriver.Chrome(options=options)
try:
    driver.get("https://example.com/hindi-page")
    # Add a page-specific wait here if the page loads content asynchronously.
    Path("screenshots").mkdir(exist_ok=True)
    driver.save_screenshot("screenshots/hindi-page.png")
finally:
    driver.quit()

save_screenshot(filename) saves a PNG of the current browser window and returns False on an I/O error. Selenium also documents get_screenshot_as_file(filename), which likewise saves the current window and expects a .png path. If only one component is needed, Selenium can take an element screenshot instead. See the Python Chromium WebDriver API and Selenium window and element screenshot documentation.

Choose viewport or full-page capture

Viewport screenshot

The regular WebDriver screenshot captures what is visible in the current browser window, not the entire document. Set the window size before navigating or capturing so responsive layout and Hindi line wrapping are predictable. Chrome’s headless guidance shows explicit window sizing and notes that full-page screenshots require additional handling.

#1 Best Overall

Full-page screenshot with Chrome DevTools Protocol

Chrome DevTools Protocol provides Page.captureScreenshot, including a captureBeyondViewport option. Page.getLayoutMetrics can provide page dimensions. The CDP reference marks related capabilities experimental, so confirm the protocol behavior supported by the specific Chrome version you deploy. Selenium’s exact interface for sending CDP commands can depend on its version and browser setup; consult the matching Selenium and Chrome documentation rather than assuming a command works across versions. See the CDP screenshot method.

Scroll and stitch

If CDP capture is unsuitable, capture successive viewport images while scrolling, then combine them. This adds implementation work and can produce artifacts: sticky headers may appear in each slice, lazy-loaded content may not be ready, and page scripts can change the layout as scrolling occurs. Account for these behaviors when deciding where slices begin and end.

Make Devanagari text render reliably

Chrome uses fonts available to the page and runtime. Hindi glyphs may be absent, blank, or rendered with a different fallback if the intended web font has not loaded or a suitable font is unavailable. Google Fonts advises CSS authors to include at least one generic fallback family such as serif or sans-serif; its documentation also covers script subsets and UTF-8 text. The page’s own CSS and font responses determine what Chrome actually uses. See Google Fonts: Getting Started.

Selenium navigation waits for the page-load event, but that does not guarantee that JavaScript updates, lazy-loaded content, or web fonts have finished. For a page you control, waiting for document.fonts.ready is a useful font-readiness signal. Combine it with a condition specific to the target page: font readiness alone does not ensure images, application hydration, or every lazy-loaded section is complete. Prefer a condition tied to the page’s actual content over an arbitrary short sleep. See Google Fonts technical considerations and Selenium waits documentation.

After saving the image, inspect the PNG at its intended size. Check that Devanagari glyphs, conjuncts, and matras are visible and legible, the intended region is in frame, and banners or sticky elements do not obscure important text.

Pick a method for your page and runtime

Method Best for Trade-off
WebDriver screenshot The visible browser window or a particular element Straightforward, but does not capture the whole document in one image.
CDP beyond-viewport capture A full-page image when the deployed Chrome version supports the required behavior Protocol support must be checked for the Chrome version; related capabilities are marked experimental.
Scroll and stitch A fallback when CDP capture is unsuitable Requires handling sticky elements, lazy loading, and layout changes triggered by scrolling.

Troubleshoot missing or incorrect content

Hindi text is blank or replaced by unexpected glyphs

  • Wait for web fonts and page-specific content before capturing; for a page you control, use document.fonts.ready as one signal.
  • Check the page’s font CSS and font responses, and confirm the runtime has a usable fallback font. A generic CSS fallback helps avoid unexpected behavior, but the page controls its actual font stack.
  • Inspect the saved PNG for missing glyphs and rendering differences rather than assuming a successful file save means the text rendered correctly.

The screenshot cuts off the page

  • If the image only needs the visible region, adjust the browser window dimensions before capture.
  • If the whole document is required, use a supported CDP beyond-viewport capture or scroll and stitch; a standard WebDriver window screenshot is not a full-page capture.

Content is missing from the lower part of the page

  • Wait for the target content to appear and for lazy-loaded material to load before capturing.
  • For a scroll-and-stitch workflow, account for scripts that react to scrolling and verify each section appears in the combined image.

The PNG was not saved

Check that the destination directory exists and is writable. The example creates its output directory before capture. Selenium’s save_screenshot reports an I/O failure by returning False; check that result when your script needs to detect save errors.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. One GET request can return an image or PDF; its clean-shot options accept cookie or consent banners before capture and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets. Each step can be turned off. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
