Use Selenium’s driver.save_screenshot(path) to save the current browser window as a PNG, or use an element’s screenshot(path) method to capture a specific component. These methods document what is visible in the browser; they do not, on the cited documentation alone, guarantee a full-page image of content below the viewport or establish that a screenshot is an authoritative tax record.
Capture a GST Portal browser view with Selenium
Selenium’s Python WebDriver API provides save_screenshot() for the current window and an element-level screenshot() method for a particular page component. Both save PNG images. Selenium’s browser documentation describes the WebDriver screenshot response as Base64-encoded image data; the Python methods handle saving the image to a path.

The example below creates a records directory, saves the current view, checks whether Selenium reported success, and always closes the browser. It assumes you have navigated to the page through an authorized workflow; it does not automate GST authentication or bypass portal controls.

Navigate to the page and wait for the content
The GST Portal’s GSTR-1 manual describes the workflow as logging in at www.gst.gov.in, then opening Services > Returns > Returns Dashboard, selecting the financial year, quarter, and month, and opening the GSTR-1 tile. The manual also describes online preparation and an offline route using JSON prepared with the offline tool. Which page and period you need to record depends on your task.
After navigating, capture only when the content you need is actually visible and loaded. The official GST guides do not prescribe Selenium wait conditions, so choose a condition based on the page and the element you need to document. A fixed sleep may be too short on a slow load and unnecessarily long on a fast one.
The sources reviewed do not establish that GST Portal endorses or permits Selenium automation. Do not assume that a documented Selenium API grants authorization to automate portal access. Use an authorized access workflow, and do not attempt to defeat authentication, CAPTCHA, or other portal controls.

Choose the right screenshot and keep its context
Capture the current window
Use driver.save_screenshot("records/gst-portal-page.png") when the relevant information is visible in the current browser view. The documented method saves the current window to PNG; these sources do not establish it as a full-page scrolling capture. If information extends below the visible area, do not describe the resulting image as a complete page.
Capture one element
Use an element screenshot when a discrete component is the record you need. Locate the element using the appropriate Selenium locator for the page, then call element.screenshot("records/gst-portal-section.png"). Keep enough surrounding context for a reviewer to identify the page and its state; cropping to a component can remove useful context.
Use a consistent window size when needed
If images need to be comparable across periods or runs, set a deliberate browser window size before navigating or capturing. The supplied Selenium and GST documentation does not prescribe a particular size. Check the saved image rather than assuming a chosen size will make every page layout legible.

Make the image useful and protect sensitive information
- Choose a purposeful filename. Identify the business purpose and period without putting credentials, OTPs, or unnecessary personal or tax data in the filename.
- Store it securely. Save the file in an access-controlled location and follow your organization’s retention policy. The cited materials do not specify a GST-specific screenshot retention period.
- Review before sharing. Confirm the correct page and period are shown, the text is legible, and the image does not expose credentials, unrelated taxpayer details, or other information that should not be shared.
- Keep related records together. Where available and relevant, retain portal-generated downloads and filing references alongside the image rather than treating the screenshot as a substitute for them.
Pair screenshots with official portal records
A screenshot can document what appeared on screen, but the official portal also provides structured records in some workflows. GST’s GSTR-1 guidance describes Excel downloads for e-invoice details, and its FAQ says the download-history area displays the last five downloaded files. The GSTR-3B guide describes downloading a filed return PDF. Available options differ by form and workflow: consult the relevant GSTR-1 FAQ and GSTR-3B guide.

The GSTR-1 FAQ says a successful filing generates an Application Reference Number (ARN) and that SMS and email notifications go to the primary authorised signatory. It also describes electronic signing through DSC or EVC. Keep the relevant filing reference and official downloads with the screenshot when applicable. This is practical recordkeeping guidance, not a claim that an image proves filing or is legally sufficient evidence.

No image appears or the save call returns false
Check that the output directory exists and that the process can write to it. This example creates the directory before capture and checks the boolean result from save_screenshot(); handle a failed save rather than silently treating it as a record.
The image shows the wrong page or a partially loaded view
Make sure the browser has reached the intended page and the required content is visible before taking the screenshot. Use a condition tied to the content you need instead of relying on one fixed delay for every run. The official portal guides describe navigation but do not specify Selenium synchronization behavior.
