The shortcut depends on both your Minecraft edition and the device running it. In Java Edition, press F2 in the game; screenshots go to the Minecraft .minecraft/Screenshots folder. Bedrock Edition on Windows uses Windows capture tools such as Windows+G or Windows+Alt+Print Screen. Consoles, iPhone, Android and Kindle Fire use their own system capture buttons, with images stored in the platform’s capture library or photo app.

Buttons and menu names can move after a console or operating-system update. If a current interface says Capture, Capture & share or Screenshot instead of the wording below, use that current menu; the capture is still handled by the host device.
Java Edition: press F2
Java Edition has a built-in screenshot command. Enter a world or server, position the camera, and press F2. The game briefly displays a confirmation message and writes an image to its screenshots directory. On some laptop keyboards you may need to hold Fn while pressing F2, because the top-row keys are assigned to brightness or media functions.

Find Java screenshots on Windows
- Open Windows Search or the Run dialog.
- Enter
%appdata%and press Enter. - Open the
.minecraftfolder. - Open
Screenshots.
The official Minecraft help material identifies this as the Java screenshots folder. Files are image captures rather than temporary clipboard content, so you can copy, rename or upload them like any other files.
Find Java screenshots on macOS or Linux
The Java game still uses the .minecraft/Screenshots directory, but the parent location is different from Windows and can vary with the launcher profile. If you use more than one launcher instance, check the game directory configured for that profile rather than assuming every installation shares one folder. The in-game screenshot-management view and the launcher profile’s game-directory setting are the safest ways to identify the active directory.
When F2 appears to do nothing
- Make sure the Minecraft window has focus; a browser or another application may be receiving the keystroke.
- Try
Fn+F2on a laptop with media-function keys. - Check that you are playing Java Edition, not Bedrock Edition from the Microsoft Store or a console.
- Look in the correct game directory if you use a custom launcher, instance manager or multiple profiles.
- Allow the game directory to be writable. A locked or read-only profile can prevent a file from being created.
Bedrock Edition on Windows
Windows Bedrock does not use Java’s F2 command as its standard screenshot control. Capture the game through Windows instead.
Use Xbox Game Bar
- Start Minecraft and display the scene you want to save.
- Press
Windows+Gto open Xbox Game Bar. - Select the camera icon in the Capture widget.
- Close the overlay or return to Minecraft and open the Windows/Xbox Game Bar capture location to retrieve the image.
Capture immediately with a keyboard shortcut
Press Windows+Alt+Print Screen. Windows captures the active game window without requiring you to open the full Game Bar first. This is useful when an overlay would cover part of the scene.
Why the Java folder is empty
Windows Bedrock captures are Windows captures, not Java screenshots. Do not expect them in %appdata%.minecraftScreenshots. Use the capture notification, Xbox Game Bar’s gallery or Windows’ configured captures location to open, copy and share the file. The exact folder presentation can change with Windows and Xbox app updates, so following the path shown by the capture notification is more reliable than memorizing a directory.

macOS screenshots
On a Mac, press Shift+Command+4, then drag over the Minecraft area you want to capture. The official Minecraft guide says this screenshot is saved on the desktop. macOS treats this as a system screenshot, so it works regardless of whether the game is Java or a compatible Bedrock setup.
Capture the whole display instead
If you need the entire screen rather than a selected rectangle, use macOS’s current full-screen screenshot command from the system screenshot toolbar. The Minecraft-specific guide documents Shift+Command+4 for a selected area; use the system toolbar when you need to choose a window, timer or full-display mode.
Xbox One
On Xbox One, double-tap the Xbox button on the controller, then press Y. The image is stored with Xbox captures. The official guide directs players to Xbox.com and the account’s Captures section to find it.
Dashboard wording has changed across Xbox updates. If double-tapping opens a newer Capture & share panel, choose its screenshot command or follow the on-screen button legend. The important point is that Xbox, rather than Minecraft, owns the capture action and storage.
PlayStation 4
Press and hold the SHARE button to save a screenshot immediately. You can also tap SHARE and select the screenshot option from the sharing menu. Open the PlayStation capture gallery to view, copy or share the image.

If holding the button opens a different menu on your system, check the controller’s current Share Button Control Type setting. A short press and a long press can be assigned different actions, but both routes remain outside Minecraft’s own controls.
Nintendo Switch
Press the dedicated camera button on the left Joy-Con. It is the small square capture button below the directional buttons. The Switch saves the image to the system’s Album.
Move or share the Switch image
Open Album from the Switch Home screen, select the screenshot, and use the available sharing or transfer option. The exact transfer choices depend on the Switch system software and whether you are sending to a phone, a computer or a social service.
iPhone and iPad-style iOS controls
iPhone with a Home button
Press the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time, then release. Open Photos > Albums > Camera Roll to find the screenshot, as specified in Minecraft’s platform guide.

Press the side button and volume-up button together. This is the current iOS capture gesture for Face ID-style iPhones and is an operating-system control rather than a Minecraft setting. The image appears in Photos, where you can crop out interface elements before sharing.

If the buttons trigger the wrong action
- Press both buttons briefly and simultaneously rather than holding one first.
- Check Photos immediately; a thumbnail normally appears after a successful capture.
- If a case makes the buttons difficult to press, use the iOS screenshot option available through the device’s accessibility controls.
Android phones and tablets
On Android 4.0 and newer, press Volume Down+Power together. The image is normally placed in the device’s Gallery or Google Photos screenshot album. Manufacturers can change the gesture or add a quick-settings screenshot tile, so older or heavily customized devices may use a different combination.
Android troubleshooting
- Press the two buttons at the same time and release quickly; holding them can open the power menu.
- Look in the Screenshots album in both Gallery and Google Photos if you are unsure which app is the default.
- On devices older than Android 4.0, consult the model’s system shortcut because there is no single reliable gesture across all hardware.
- Use the phone’s screenshot tile or assistant command when a physical button is broken.
Kindle Fire HD
Press Power+Volume Down together. Open the device’s Photos or image library to view the result. As with Android hardware, the exact on-screen library name can vary by Fire OS version.
Bedrock Realms screenshot support
Bedrock Realms includes built-in screenshot support and sharing with friends in the Realm club. This is an exception to the usual Bedrock pattern: Realms can provide Minecraft-level sharing features instead of relying entirely on a console or phone’s capture menu.
Use the screenshot and sharing controls shown in your Realm interface. If you are playing ordinary Bedrock locally or on a non-Realm server, use the host platform’s Windows, console or mobile capture controls described above.

The official Minecraft guide states that neither PlayStation 3 nor Xbox 360 has a built-in screenshot function that supports Minecraft. Capturing footage from those systems requires video-capture technology. That advice applies to these legacy platforms; it is not a recommendation for ordinary current Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, PC or mobile players.
How Java and Bedrock differ

Microsoft’s Bedrock control-schemes documentation, updated May 27, 2025, describes controller, touch, keyboard-and-mouse and full-keyboard input. That range of input models is why Bedrock capture is normally delegated to the host device instead of assigned one cross-platform key.

Prepare the scene
- Pause or move to a safe location if other players, mobs or weather effects could spoil the frame.
- Hide menus and chat before capturing. A system screenshot records whatever is visible on screen.
- Adjust the camera, field of view and interface scale before pressing the capture control.
- For a map, build or redstone mechanism, stand far enough away to show the full design and use a consistent viewpoint for later comparisons.
Check the result immediately
Open the destination library after capturing. Java files should appear in .minecraft/Screenshots; Windows Bedrock images should appear in the Windows capture workflow; consoles should show them in their capture gallery; and phones should show them in Photos or Gallery. Checking at once catches a missed key, wrong profile or full storage before you leave the scene.
Share without losing the original
Copy the original file before editing or posting. Crop a mobile or desktop screenshot for readability, but keep the untouched image if you may need the full resolution later. Console and mobile sharing menus can compress images, so transfer the file to a computer when you need the least-compressed copy.
Common problems and fixes
“F2 does not work”
First identify the edition. F2 is the Java shortcut; Bedrock on Windows requires Game Bar or Windows+Alt+Print Screen, and console or mobile Bedrock uses the device control. On laptops, try Fn+F2. Also confirm Minecraft has keyboard focus and that the active launcher profile is the one whose screenshots folder you are checking.
“The screenshot saved, but I cannot find it”
Match the search location to the capture owner. Java uses the active .minecraft/Screenshots folder. Windows Bedrock uses Xbox Game Bar or Windows capture storage. Xbox, PlayStation and Switch use their capture libraries, while iPhone, Android and Kindle Fire use Photos or Gallery. Searching the Java folder for a Bedrock or console capture will not find it.

System captures record the screen exactly as displayed. Close Game Bar, chat and inventory panels before pressing the capture button. On macOS, use the selected-area command to exclude unrelated desktop content; on a phone, crop the saved image after capture.
“There is no storage space”
Delete or transfer old images from the relevant library, then capture again. Java can accumulate files in its screenshots directory, while console and mobile libraries can fill shared device storage. Keep important originals somewhere else before bulk deletion.
Which method should you use?
- Java on a computer: use
F2because it creates a Minecraft screenshot directly in the game folder. - Bedrock on Windows: use
Windows+Alt+Print Screenfor speed orWindows+Gwhen you want Game Bar’s capture controls. - macOS: use
Shift+Command+4when you need a selected region saved to the desktop. - Xbox, PlayStation or Switch: use the controller’s capture command and retrieve the image from that console’s gallery.
- iPhone, Android or Kindle Fire: use the operating-system button combination and open Photos or Gallery.
- Bedrock Realms: use the Realm’s built-in screenshot and sharing feature when it is available in your current interface.
- Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3: plan on external video-capture hardware because those systems lack built-in Minecraft screenshot support.
The reliable rule is simple: press F2 only for Java Edition. For Bedrock, identify the device first, use its capture control, and retrieve the image from that device’s library.
