Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesGoogle Drive does not take the screenshot itself. Capture the screen with your Chromebook, computer or phone, then upload the resulting image file to Drive. On a Chromebook, screenshots normally go to Downloads and are copied to the clipboard automatically. This guide shows the complete capture-and-upload workflow, where files appear, and how to fix common problems.
How the Google Drive screenshot workflow works
There are two separate actions:
- Capture: use your device’s built-in screenshot tool to create an image file.
- Upload: send that image to Google Drive with New > File upload, drag-and-drop, or the Drive mobile app.
Keeping those steps separate explains why a screenshot may be visible on your device but not yet present in Drive. Drive stores and organizes the file; it is not the capture utility.
Take a screenshot on a Chromebook
Open Screen Capture
Use whichever method matches your keyboard:
- Press the dedicated Screenshot key, if your Chromebook has one.
- Open Settings > Screen Capture.
- Press Shift + Ctrl + Show windows. The Show windows key looks like a rectangle with two vertical lines.
- With an external keyboard that has no Show windows key, Google lists Ctrl + Shift + F5 as the fallback.
Google describes this built-in feature as a way to “take a screenshot or record a video of your Chromebook’s screen.” Choose the camera icon or Screenshot mode rather than screen recording.
Choose the capture area
The Screen Capture bar offers three choices:
- Full screen: captures every visible display.
- Partial: drag around the exact region you need.
- Window: captures one application window.
For a partial capture, keyboard controls can resize the selection. Pressing Space changes the selected section while you are choosing an area. Check the preview before closing the tool so browser tabs, notifications or private information are not included accidentally.

Find the Chromebook screenshot
By default, ChromeOS saves screenshots in the Downloads folder. The image is also copied to the clipboard, so you can paste it into another app immediately. If you changed the destination in Screen Capture settings, look in that selected folder instead.
Chromebook screenshots are commonly PNG files. The filename is generated automatically; rename it before uploading if a descriptive name will help collaborators find it later.
Upload a screenshot to Google Drive on a computer
Upload from the Drive website
- Open drive.google.com and sign in to the Google account that should own the file.
- Open My Drive or the destination folder. For a new folder, click New > New folder, name it, and open it.
- Click New > File upload.
- Select the screenshot in Downloads (or the folder you chose in Screen Capture settings).
- Wait for the upload notification to report completion. The image will appear in the open folder.
You can upload into a private folder or a shared folder where you have permission to add files. An upload consumes Drive storage, including when the destination folder is owned by someone else.
Use drag and drop
Open the destination folder in Drive, open your computer’s Files or file-manager window, and drag the screenshot onto the Drive page. Keep the browser tab open until the upload indicator finishes. This method is useful when you already have the Downloads folder visible.

Confirm the file and sharing state
Click the uploaded image to preview it, then use File information if you need its location or modification time. Uploading does not automatically make a private file public. To share it, select the file, click Share, and choose people or link access deliberately.
Upload a screenshot with the Google Drive Android app
- Open the Google Drive app.
- Tap New (the plus button).
- Tap Upload.
- Choose the screenshot from your phone’s image or file picker.
- Wait for the upload to finish, then find it in My Drive until you move it to another folder.
The exact location shown by the picker depends on your phone and gallery app. If the image is only in a photo app, use that app’s share option and select Drive, or save a copy to local storage first so it appears in the upload picker.
Platform notes and limits
| Platform | Capture method established here | Drive upload path | Default or resulting location |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chromebook | Screenshot key, Settings > Screen Capture, or Shift + Ctrl + Show windows; Ctrl + Shift + F5 for a compatible external keyboard | Drive website: New > File upload or drag and drop | Downloads by default; also copied to clipboard |
| Desktop computer | Use the operating system’s screenshot feature | Drive website: New > File upload or drag and drop | The folder selected during upload |
| Android | Use the phone’s screenshot feature | Drive app: New > Upload | My Drive until moved |
The documented capture instructions above are specific to Chromebook. Exact Windows, macOS and iPhone/iPad screenshot shortcuts are not specified here, so do not assume the Chromebook key combinations work on those devices. Their resulting image files can still be uploaded through the desktop or Android paths when the Drive interface is available.
Useful screenshot choices before you upload
Full screen versus window
Use a window capture for a clean bug report that excludes unrelated tabs. Use partial capture when only one control or error message matters. Full-screen images preserve context but may reveal notifications, account names or confidential data.

Clipboard versus file
The clipboard is convenient for an immediate paste, but it is not a Drive upload. Save or locate the image file first, then use File upload or the Android Upload command if you need durable storage.
Folder and naming conventions
For team work, create a folder by project and use names such as checkout-error-2026-09-29.png. Consistent names make Drive search and sorting more useful than the automatically generated names.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a screenshot of a public webpage rather than a picture of your own desktop, ScreenshotNeo returns an image or PDF from one API request. It accepts consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Only clean shots are billed: bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits cost nothing, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for all options. This example captures a webpage as WebP:

Troubleshooting
The screenshot is not in Drive
Check that the capture completed and locate the file in Chromebook Downloads first. Seeing a thumbnail or clipboard notification does not mean an upload occurred. Return to Drive and use New > File upload, then wait for the completion message.
You cannot find Downloads
Open the Chromebook Files app and select Downloads. If Screen Capture was configured with another destination, open its settings and use the selected folder. Search by the recent timestamp or the generated image filename.
The upload is stuck or fails
- Keep the Drive tab or app open until the progress indicator finishes.
- Check that you are signed in to the intended account and still have permission to write to the folder.
- Try a smaller image or a new folder if storage is full.
- Reload Drive and retry after confirming your network connection.
The image looks wrong
Re-capture using Window or Partial mode to exclude browser chrome and notifications. For a clipped selection, repeat the capture and resize its boundary before clicking the shutter.
A shared-folder upload is missing for another person
Verify that the upload finished and that the file is in the shared folder rather than your private My Drive. Check the folder’s sharing permissions and the file’s individual sharing settings; uploading alone does not grant access.

FAQ
Does Google Drive have a screenshot button?
No. Capture the image with your device, then upload the file to Drive.
Where are Chromebook screenshots saved?
Downloads is the default location, and ChromeOS also copies the image to the clipboard.
Can I paste a screenshot directly into Drive?
Use an image file upload or drag-and-drop. Clipboard content must first be saved as a file or pasted into an application that can create one.
Recommended Free Tools
Will uploading a screenshot make it public?
No. New files retain the destination folder’s access rules until you change sharing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I change where Chromebook screenshots are saved?
Yes. Open the Screen Capture controls and change the destination folder in its settings; otherwise ChromeOS uses Downloads.
Do screenshots uploaded to a shared folder use my Drive storage?
Google notes that uploaded files take Drive storage, including uploads into a folder owned by someone else.
