How to Take Screenshots and Screen Recordings on a Samsung Galaxy Tablet

On most Samsung Galaxy tablets, press the Power/Side button and Volume Down button together briefly, then release them to capture a screenshot. For video, swipe down to open the Quick panel, tap Screen recorder (or Record screen), choose the sound option, and start after the countdown.

Exact buttons, menu names, and feature availability vary by Galaxy Tab model, software version, and sometimes service provider. The instructions below cover the common controls while showing what to do when your tablet presents different options.

Which capture method should you use?

Choose the method based on what you need rather than assuming every Galaxy Tab has identical hardware or software.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Method What it captures Requirements Best use
Power/Side + Volume Down One still image of the current display Working physical buttons; supported button layout Fast, broadly applicable screenshots
Palm swipe One still image Palm-swipe feature available and enabled Captures when pressing buttons is awkward
S Pen Screen write One still image that can be annotated Compatible tablet and S Pen Markup, handwritten notes, and explanations
Scroll capture An extended still image through supported long content Screenshot toolbar and scrollable content that supports the feature Long webpages, documents, or conversations
Screen recorder Video, with selectable sound options Supported recorder feature; available storage and app permission Demonstrations, troubleshooting, and short lessons

Physical-button capture does not require an S Pen. Palm swipe, Screen write, Scroll capture, and screen recording are optional features whose availability can differ even between Galaxy Tab generations. A screenshot is usually the better choice for a single error message or reference image; recording is more useful when someone must see a sequence of taps.

Samsung Galaxy S Pen for Tab S11/S11 Ultra, Ergonomic Design, Natural Touch, Stylish Stylus, Durable, US Version, White
  • IMPROVED SHAPE. MORE PRECISION: For a steady and familiar hold, S Pen features a hexagonal body modeled after a classic pencil. The cone-shaped tip helps every stroke feel smooth and precise, making note-taking and sketching feel natural.
  • EASY TO CARRY, EASY TO STORE: S Pen sits neatly along the side of your Galaxy Tab, staying visible and easy to reach. Just pick it up when inspiration strikes – no searching around your desk.
  • PROTECTION FROM THE ELEMENTS: IP68-rated for protection against dust and water, S Pen is designed to handle the unexpected.²
  • DEVICE COMPATIBILITY: The Samsung Galaxy Tab S11 S-Pen is compatible with the Samsung Galaxy Tab S11 and Tab S11 Ultra (sold separately).

Before you start

  • Identify the tablet’s exact model if a feature is missing. Open Settings and use the device-information section, or check the model label and manual.
  • Make sure you know whether your tablet calls the power key Power or Side. Samsung uses both names in its instructions.
  • If the tablet has a physical Home button, do not assume the modern button combination applies. Older hardware can use a different arrangement; follow that model’s manual.
  • Expect labels and menus to change with software updates. A control may be called Screen recorder on one tablet and Record screen on another.
  • Free enough storage for the result, particularly for long videos or high-quality recordings. A full tablet can stop a recording or prevent a screenshot from being saved.

Take a screenshot with the buttons

Use the standard shortcut

  1. Display the screen you want to save.
  2. Press the Power/Side button and Volume Down button at the same time.
  3. Release both buttons after a brief moment. Do not hold them down for several seconds.
  4. Look for the flash or other capture indication. A screenshot toolbar may appear along the bottom or in another location, depending on the tablet.

The buttons must be pressed together, not one after the other. If the tablet opens the power menu, changes the volume, or does nothing, try again with a shorter, more precisely simultaneous press. A thick case can also interfere with the keys; remove it temporarily if the buttons feel obstructed. Holding the combination too long can trigger a different command, so a quick press-and-release is intentional.

What to do on an older Galaxy Tab

Some historical Galaxy tablets have a physical Home button or a different key layout. Samsung’s tablet guidance treats the button arrangement as model-specific, so a combination that works on a recent Tab is not a guarantee for every older device. Search the exact model’s manual or Samsung’s support instructions rather than repeatedly trying random combinations.

Use Palm swipe to capture

Turn on the gesture

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to Advanced features and then Motions and gestures.
  3. Enable Palm swipe to capture, if the switch is present.
  4. If the menus are arranged differently, use the Settings search field for Palm swipe to capture.

Swipe across the display

Place the edge of your hand on one side of the screen and sweep it across the display in one motion. The tablet should show the capture animation and open the screenshot controls. Keep your hand in contact with the glass; a light touch that starts in the middle of the display may be interpreted as ordinary scrolling instead.

If the setting cannot be found, the feature may not be supported by that model or software version. It is not a fault that can be fixed by changing the swipe direction. Use the button method or check the model documentation. A screen protector, glove, or unusually wet display can also make a deliberate edge-of-hand swipe less reliable, so test the gesture on an unobstructed screen.

Capture and annotate with an S Pen

Use Screen write

  1. Open the content you want to mark up.
  2. Open Air command with the compatible S Pen.
  3. Choose Screen write. The tablet captures the current screen and places it in an editing view.
  4. Write or draw on the image with the pen tools.
  5. Save the result. The annotated capture is stored in Gallery.

Screen write is a convenience for compatible tablets and pens, not a prerequisite for ordinary screenshots. Check compatibility for the exact Galaxy Tab before buying or pairing an S Pen; Samsung does not make every pen work with every tablet. An S Pen is worthwhile when you routinely circle controls, add handwritten explanations, or send marked-up screenshots, but it is not needed just to take a normal capture.

Extend a screenshot with Scroll capture

Scroll capture is useful when the information continues below the visible screen, such as a webpage or a long document.

  1. Take a normal screenshot using the buttons, Palm swipe, or another supported method.
  2. When the screenshot toolbar appears, tap the Scroll capture control, identified by two downward arrows.
  3. Continue tapping the control as the page moves downward. Stop when the required content is included.
  4. Save the extended image from the toolbar.

The control appears only when the tablet and the current app can provide additional scrollable content. A fixed image, a protected screen, or an app that does not expose its page to the capture service may not offer it. If the toolbar disappears, open the screenshot from Gallery and use the editing options available on that model instead. Scroll capture is not the same as taking several separate screenshots: it creates one longer file, which is easier to share but may be harder to read at full length.

Edit, share, and find screenshots

Use the screenshot toolbar

Immediately after capture, the toolbar can provide editing, cropping, tagging, sharing, and Scroll capture controls. The exact icons depend on the tablet and software. Tap the option you need before leaving the capture screen; you can still make later changes from Gallery, but the available tools may be different.

Find saved screenshots

Open Gallery, choose Albums, and open Screenshots. This is the standard Samsung location for still captures. If your tablet uses a customized Gallery layout, search within Gallery for the Screenshots album or sort by the newest item. A screenshot may also appear in the main Pictures view alongside camera photos, so check the capture time if the album is not immediately visible.

Share without losing the original

Use the toolbar’s share control or Gallery’s share command to send a copy. Editing or sharing does not require deleting the original; keep the original when you may need to crop a different area or annotate it later. Before sharing a screenshot, check for passwords, addresses, notification previews, or other private information visible in the status bar.

Record the tablet screen as video

Start from the Quick panel

  1. Open the app or screen you want to demonstrate.
  2. Swipe down from the top of the display to open the Quick panel. On some tablets, a second swipe is needed to show all controls.
  3. Tap Screen recorder or Record screen.
  4. Choose the sound setting offered by your tablet. Options can include no sound, device or media sound, and a microphone combination; the labels vary.
  5. Start recording. A countdown gives you time to return to the content.
  6. When finished, use the on-screen recording control or notification to stop.

Do not navigate away during the countdown unless you intend to include that transition in the video. The recorder captures activity after recording begins, not the setup screens that came before it. For a useful tutorial, perform each tap slowly and pause briefly after major changes so the viewer can follow them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Add the recorder when it is missing

  1. Open the Quick panel and tap its Edit, pencil, plus, or three-dot control, depending on the software.
  2. View the available buttons that are not currently displayed.
  3. Find Screen recorder or Record screen, then drag it into the active Quick-panel area or tap to add it.
  4. Save the arrangement and open the panel again to start recording.

Samsung’s instructions describe a plus/edit flow for adding the control, but the visual layout is not identical on every version. If the button is not listed in the edit screen, consult the exact model’s manual. The recorder is documented for devices running One UI 2 or later, but that software level alone does not guarantee support on every Galaxy Tab.

Choose recording quality and sound

On supported tablets, open Settings > Advanced features > Screenshots and screen recorder. The available controls can include sound selection, video quality, and selfie-video size. Choose the sound source before starting when you need narration or app audio, and select the quality that suits the purpose and available storage. Menu names and the number of choices can differ by model.

If you use a selfie-video option, confirm that the small camera view is wanted before recording. Turn it off when the video should show only the tablet’s screen. Make a short test recording when narration matters: it confirms that the microphone is included, the volume is acceptable, and the app has not muted protected audio.

Why a screenshot or recording may be blocked

Privacy and security restrictions

Some apps deliberately prevent screenshots. Banking, streaming, enterprise, and other protected apps can show a blank result, a warning, or no capture at all. Screen recording can also be disabled when an app applies copyright restrictions. These protections are enforced by the app or operating system; changing the screenshot gesture does not bypass them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not promise that protected content can be recorded. If you need information from a restricted app, use its built-in export, download, or share function when one is provided. Recording another device’s protected content with a second camera may also violate terms or privacy expectations, so obtain permission before distributing anything.

Secure Folder and managed devices

Secure Folder behavior and capture permissions can depend on the Galaxy Tab model, software version, and service-provider configuration. A capture that works in the regular profile may be unavailable inside a secured or managed area. Follow the security policy for that profile instead of trying to circumvent it. Work or school administrators may also disable capture on a managed tablet.

Troubleshoot a failed screenshot

The buttons do not work

  • Press Power/Side and Volume Down simultaneously and release promptly.
  • Check that each key responds normally outside the screenshot attempt.
  • Remove a case that may prevent either button from being fully pressed.
  • If the tablet has a physical Home button or unusual layout, look up the exact model’s button instructions.
  • Use Palm swipe or an S Pen only if those features appear in Settings or Air command.
  • Restart the tablet if the keys work but capture feedback has stopped, then test again on an ordinary home screen.

Palm swipe is unavailable or unreliable

  • Search Settings for Palm swipe to capture rather than relying on a remembered menu path.
  • Confirm that the switch is enabled under the tablet’s motion and gesture settings.
  • Swipe with the hand’s edge across the display in one continuous motion.
  • If no setting exists, treat the feature as unsupported on that model or software version and use the buttons.

The Screen recorder tile is missing

  • Open the Quick panel’s edit controls and check the unused-button area.
  • Look for both names: Screen recorder and Record screen.
  • Add the button if it is available but hidden.
  • If it is absent from the edit list, check the model manual; not every Galaxy Tab supports the recorder.

The recording has the wrong audio

Stop the recording and start a new one after selecting a different sound option. The recorder’s sound choice applies to the new recording; changing it afterward cannot add audio that was never captured. For narration, select the option that includes the microphone when your tablet provides one, and check the resulting file before sharing. If media audio is silent, the app may be blocking capture rather than malfunctioning.

Practical capture workflows

Save a long webpage

  1. Open the page and wait for the section you need to load.
  2. Take a button or gesture screenshot.
  3. Tap the two-arrow Scroll capture control repeatedly until the required section is included.
  4. Save it in Gallery, then crop or tag it so it is easier to find later.

Explain a setting to someone

  1. Use Screen write if your tablet supports a compatible S Pen.
  2. Circle the control or add a short handwritten label.
  3. Save the annotated image to Gallery and share that copy.

Demonstrate a task

  1. Open the Quick panel and select Screen recorder or Record screen.
  2. Choose the required sound source and video quality in the available controls.
  3. Start after the countdown, perform the task slowly, and stop from the recorder control.
  4. Review the video before sending it, especially when the app may restrict capture or the microphone was important.

Model and software differences to keep in mind

Samsung’s support guidance is intentionally model-specific. Button placement, the presence of Palm swipe, S Pen compatibility, screenshot-toolbar actions, Quick-panel editing, sound choices, video-quality controls, and Secure Folder behavior can all vary. A menu path such as Settings > Advanced features > Screenshots and screen recorder may be shortened, renamed, or unavailable on another tablet.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When a step does not match what you see, search the tablet’s Settings app for the feature name, inspect the Quick panel’s edit screen, and consult the manual for the exact model and software version. This approach is more reliable than assuming that an instruction for a newer Galaxy Tab also applies to an older one.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the quickest way to screenshot a Samsung Galaxy tablet?

Press the Power or Side button and Volume Down together briefly, then release both. A flash or toolbar confirms the capture. Older tablets with a physical Home button may use a different combination.

Where are screenshots saved on a Galaxy tablet?

Open Gallery, select Albums, and open Screenshots. They may also appear in the main Pictures view, sorted by capture time.

Can I take a screenshot without pressing physical buttons?

If supported, enable Palm swipe to capture under Settings > Advanced features > Motions and gestures, then sweep the edge of your hand across the display. An S Pen can also use Air command > Screen write on compatible models.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I screenshot an entire webpage?

Take a normal screenshot, then tap the Scroll capture button with two downward arrows. Tap it repeatedly until the required content is included. The option appears only for supported, scrollable content.

How do I screen-record a Galaxy tablet?

Open the Quick panel, tap Screen recorder or Record screen, choose the available sound option, and start after the countdown. Use the on-screen control or notification to stop.

Why is Screen recorder missing?

Open the Quick panel’s edit controls and check the unused buttons, looking for either Screen recorder or Record screen. If it is not listed, the tablet or software may not support the feature; check the exact model manual.

Why can’t I screenshot or record a particular app?

Apps can block capture for privacy, security, copyright, or administrator-policy reasons. A blank image, warning, or disabled recorder is expected in some protected apps. Use the app’s own export or share feature instead.

Do I need an S Pen to take screenshots?

No. The Power/Side plus Volume Down shortcut works without an S Pen on supported layouts. The pen is optional for Screen write annotation.

The Bottom Line

For most Galaxy tablets, use Power/Side + Volume Down for a still image and the Quick panel for video. Palm swipe, S Pen Screen write, Scroll capture, sound controls, and recorder availability depend on the exact model and software. If a control is missing, check Quick-panel editing, search Settings, and consult the model manual rather than forcing a different shortcut.
