A useful screenshot of a broken link should let someone verify three things: which page contains the link, which destination was checked, and what failure appeared. Record both URLs and the time of the observation, capture the source page and failure when practical, and recheck transient errors before calling them persistent.
What to record before you take the screenshot
Create an audit row or note for each finding before capturing it. Include:

- The source-page URL, where the link appears.
- The destination URL, exactly as checked.
- The date and time of the observation.
- The browser or audit context used.
- The specific result, such as a browser error page or an HTTP response reported by a diagnostic tool.
These fields are practical evidence-handling advice, not a formal Google checklist. Keep the note associated with the image, especially if the full destination URL cannot fit legibly in the screenshot.

Confirm the link is present in the rendered page
Google generally discovers links represented by an <a> element with an href. If JavaScript inserts the link, check the rendered HTML with URL Inspection to confirm it is present. A visible-looking control alone does not establish that Google can crawl it as a link. Google Search Central: SEO Link Best Practices for Google.

Capture the broken-link evidence in a browser
- Open the source page. Navigate to the page containing the reported link and ensure the linked text or control is visible. Preserve enough surrounding context to identify the page and link.
- Open the destination. Follow the link or enter its exact destination URL in the browser. Record the failure actually shown, rather than describing a result that is not visible or otherwise verified.
- Capture the relevant screens. Include the source link and the destination failure if they can be shown together. If not, retain separate screenshots with a shared finding ID or an audit note associating them.
- Keep identifiers readable. Include the destination URL and failure message in the image when practical. Do not crop away context needed to connect the source page, link, and result. Put long URLs, timestamps, or details that do not fit in the companion audit row.
- Save with a stable name. Use a finding ID or filename that maps to the audit row, and retain the source URL, destination URL, timestamp, and reported status or error alongside it.
When Chrome DevTools Issues is relevant
Chrome DevTools’ Issues panel can provide context for certain browser-reported issue types and link affected resources into the relevant DevTools view. It is not a general broken-link crawler or a site-wide inventory. Use it as supporting evidence for a browser issue it actually reports, not as proof that all links on a site are broken. Use Search Console as a second evidence source
In Google Search Console, URL Inspection can show Google’s rendered-page screenshot and diagnostic information such as response data, HTTP headers, raw HTML, console output, and loaded resources for a successful live test. This is evidence of Google’s inspection of a URL, not a substitute for preserving the specific browser failure you observed. Keep the scope clear in the audit record: a browser capture documents your observed instance; URL Inspection documents the result of Google’s live inspection.

Google notes that server errors may be transient and that a live test may differ from what happened during a previous crawl. Recheck a material failure after a short interval or through another suitable diagnostic route before describing it as persistent. Google does not prescribe a particular interval in this guidance. A single failed check is an observation to verify, not automatic proof of an ongoing defect.

Where Lighthouse fits
Lighthouse produces reports covering SEO and other audit categories, and its documentation describes screenshots of a page’s appearance during loading. That makes it useful for page-audit context, but it should not be presented as a dedicated broken-link crawler. Chrome for Developers: Lighthouse.

Does a screenshot alone prove that Google has indexed or crawled a broken link?
No. It records what appeared during the capture; URL Inspection provides separate evidence about Google’s inspection of a page.
