Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Use Playwright to visit each URL and save a screenshot, then use a scheduler to start the script at the times you choose. The example below captures a list of pages sequentially, records individual failures, and runs on a GitHub Actions schedule. Scheduling is not an exact-time guarantee: GitHub says scheduled workflows can be delayed during high load and some queued jobs can be dropped.
What the workflow does
Playwright handles browser navigation and image capture; a separate scheduler triggers the script. Keeping these jobs separate makes it easier to run the same capture locally, in CI, or through another scheduler.

- Keep the target URLs in an explicit list.
- For each URL, navigate a Playwright page and save an image.
- Run the script at the chosen times using a scheduler such as GitHub Actions.
The example uses Node.js and Playwright. It reuses one page sequentially, which is a simple, relatively light approach for a modest list of URLs.

npm init -y
npm install playwright
npx playwright install chromium
For GitHub Actions, use Playwright’s CI installation guidance and install the browser and required system dependencies with npx playwright install --with-deps.
Create the script
Save this as capture.js. Replace the sample URLs with the pages you want to capture.
const { chromium } = require('playwright');
const fs = require('node:fs/promises');
const path = require('node:path');
const urls = [
'https://example.com/',
'https://playwright.dev/',
];
function filenameFor(url, index) {
const hostname = new URL(url).hostname.replace(/[^a-z0-9.-]/gi, '_');
const timestamp = new Date().toISOString().replace(/[:.]/g, '-');
return `${String(index + 1).padStart(2, '0')}-${hostname}-${timestamp}.png`;
}
(async () => {
const outputDir = path.join(__dirname, 'screenshots');
await fs.mkdir(outputDir, { recursive: true });
const browser = await chromium.launch({ headless: true });
const failures = [];
try {
const context = await browser.newContext();
const page = await context.newPage();
for (const [index, url] of urls.entries()) {
const outputPath = path.join(outputDir, filenameFor(url, index));
try {
const response = await page.goto(url, {
waitUntil: 'load',
timeout: 30000,
});
if (response && !response.ok()) {
throw new Error(`HTTP ${response.status()} ${response.statusText()}`);
}
await page.screenshot({ path: outputPath });
console.log(`Saved ${url} to ${outputPath}`);
} catch (error) {
failures.push({ url, error: error.message });
console.error(`Failed ${url}: ${error.message}`);
}
}
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
if (failures.length) {
console.error('Some URLs were not captured:', JSON.stringify(failures, null, 2));
process.exitCode = 1;
}
})();
The generated filename combines a sanitized hostname, list position, and capture timestamp. That naming scheme is an implementation choice, not a Playwright requirement. The script checks a returned HTTP response when one is available, saves a viewport screenshot by default, continues after a per-URL failure, and closes the browser in a finally block.

Choose navigation and image behavior
page.goto() navigates to a URL and page.screenshot({ path }) writes the image. By default, the screenshot shows the current viewport. Set fullPage: true when you need the full scrollable document:
await page.screenshot({ path: outputPath, fullPage: true });
Wait behavior depends on the site. The example uses waitUntil: 'load'; for pages with late-loading content, you may need to wait for a relevant selector or a specific delay before capturing. Choose a condition that reflects when the content you need is ready rather than assuming every page renders identically.
Schedule the script with GitHub Actions
Commit the script and package files to a GitHub repository, then add .github/workflows/screenshots.yml. This example runs at 09:00 UTC every day, installs dependencies and Chromium, executes the capture script, and uploads the resulting images as a workflow artifact.

For a clean npm ci install, commit the generated package-lock.json. The example’s schedule is in UTC by default. GitHub Actions also supports an IANA timezone on scheduled workflows; check the current schedule documentation for the supported syntax and limits. Scheduled workflows run from the repository’s default branch. GitHub documents a minimum schedule interval of five minutes, but schedule timing is not precise: as GitHub puts it, “The schedule event can be delayed during periods of high loads of GitHub Actions workflow runs.” Runs may also be dropped if queued jobs cannot be processed.
The artifact step makes captures available from the workflow run; it does not commit the files back into the repository. If you need long-term storage or a different delivery path, add a step for your chosen storage system and configure any required credentials as repository secrets.
Choose page reuse, concurrency, and output
One page or several
The sample navigates one page through the URL list, which is straightforward and keeps browser use modest. Playwright also supports multiple pages in a browser context, so separate pages can be used when you want to express concurrent captures. Concurrency increases resource use, and no single level is right for every host or workload; start sequentially and add parallelism only if your environment can handle it.

Viewport or full page
Use the default viewport screenshot when the visible screen is what you need. Use fullPage: true for the full scrollable page. Full-page captures can take longer and produce larger images, especially on long pages.
Scheduled archive or visual regression test
A periodic image archive simply saves whatever the page looked like at capture time. If the goal is to detect unintended visual changes against a known baseline, Playwright Test offers expect(page).toHaveScreenshot(). That assertion waits for two consecutive screenshots to match before comparing with the baseline, and screenshot assertions require the Playwright test runner. See Playwright’s visual comparisons guide.
Make captures more reproducible
A scheduled run can produce a different image even when your code has not changed. Playwright notes that rendering can vary with the host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. For meaningful comparisons, keep the capture environment consistent and use the same environment as the one used to create the baseline. See Playwright’s guidance on visual comparisons.

- Choose a wait condition that matches the content you need, and avoid capturing during a known loading or animation state.
Troubleshoot common failures
- Browser executable is missing: install the browser matching the Playwright package with
npx playwright install chromiumlocally, ornpx playwright install --with-deps chromiumin a Linux CI job. npm cifails: ensure the repository contains a lockfile generated for the committed package manifest, and that the Node.js version is compatible with the project dependencies.- A URL times out: check that the address is reachable from the runner, then adjust the navigation timeout or wait condition if the page legitimately needs longer. The sample records the failure and moves on to the next URL.
- An image is blank or incomplete: identify a page-specific readiness signal, such as a selector that appears after the relevant content loads, and wait for it before taking the screenshot. A generic load event may not mean every dynamic element is ready.
- Only some URLs produce images: inspect the per-URL error output. A navigation or HTTP error for one page does not stop the remaining captures, but the script returns a failing exit status if any URL failed.
- The scheduled run did not start at the expected minute: GitHub Actions schedules can be delayed during high load, especially near the start of an hour, and queued jobs may be dropped. Choose a schedule away from the start of the hour when practical, and use a scheduler with stricter timing requirements if the exact execution time is operationally important.
- Images differ between runs: compare the host OS, browser version, viewport and other rendering settings, and use a stable environment for both baseline and capture.
- Artifacts are missing: confirm the script writes to
screenshots/and that the upload step uses the same path. The example skips artifact upload when no files exist.
Or skip the browser setup
Playwright is a good fit when you need a customizable browser workflow under your control. If you want a screenshot API instead, ScreenshotNeo returns an image or PDF from one GET request. For example, this cURL request saves a WebP screenshot of a URL:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. It removes supported cookie/consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed. Its MCP server provides screenshot tools for AI agents, and the free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo’s free plan.
Frequently Asked Questions
