The script controls what gets captured; the scheduler controls when it runs. The example below uses Playwright and leaves the news sites, capture time, and storage location for you to configure.
Choose what to capture
Start by listing the homepage URLs and deciding whether each image should show only the first screen or the entire page. Use a viewport screenshot for a consistent view of what appears on screen without scrolling. Use a full-page screenshot when below-the-fold content matters. Playwright also supports element screenshots; its documentation describes the available screenshot types and saving them to files: Playwright screenshots.

- Viewport: a fixed-size view of the visible page. This is usually easier to compare day to day.
- Full page: the full scrollable page, including content below the fold. Page length and layout changes can make images vary substantially.
- Element: a particular page element, if you identify it with a selector that remains valid. No selectors for specific Indian news sites are established here.
Keep the browser, viewport dimensions, and capture type the same between runs if you want a useful visual record. Homepage redesigns and changing headlines will still change the image.

This Node.js example captures the visible viewport for a list of homepages. It creates a dated folder and writes one PNG per site. Replace the example URLs, set the desired viewport, and run it with a current Node.js installation. Playwright’s getting-started instructions cover installation: Playwright installation and setup.

Run it once by hand and inspect the images and
manifest.json:node capture.mjs
The script uses a 60-second navigation timeout and records failures rather than silently treating them as successful captures. It uses load as a general starting point, not a guarantee that a news homepage has finished rendering. If the content you need arrives later, choose a site-appropriate readiness condition and verify it periodically; a fixed delay can be too short on a slow run and waste time on a fast one. Playwright’s navigation and wait options are documented at page.goto.

Capture the full page instead
For a full-page image, change the screenshot call to:
await page.screenshot({ path, fullPage: true });Playwright defines a full-page screenshot as an image of the full scrollable page: full-page screenshots. Very long pages can produce large images, and lazy-loaded content may not appear unless it has been loaded before capture.
Wait for a page-specific condition
If a known element indicates that the content of interest is present, wait for it before capture:

await page.screenshot({ path, fullPage: false });Replace YOUR_SELECTOR with a selector you have checked on that site. A selector can break when the publisher changes its layout, so log failures and review captures rather than assuming the same condition will work indefinitely.
Schedule the script for the intended morning
A recurring capture has two separate requirements: the script must run successfully, and the scheduler must interpret its schedule in the intended timezone. Specify the timezone in the scheduler itself where supported; changing the machine’s display timezone alone may not change how a managed scheduler evaluates its schedule.
Google Cloud Scheduler
Google Cloud Scheduler lets you select a timezone for evaluating a schedule and documents UTC as its default. Configure the scheduler’s timezone field to the location that defines your morning, rather than relying on that default. Its documentation warns that daylight-saving transitions can cause a wall-clock schedule to be skipped or repeated: Cloud Scheduler cron schedules and time zones.

systemd timers
For a Linux machine running the script, systemd calendar expressions can use an explicit timezone; if none is specified, the current timezone applies. Check the system’s timer documentation and use a named timezone where needed: systemd.time. The actual timer setup depends on how you deploy and run the script.
Kubernetes CronJobs
Kubernetes documents CronJob scheduling as approximate. Use the CronJob timezone field rather than putting TZ or CRON_TZ inside the schedule expression: Kubernetes CronJobs. This matters if a run is operationally important: the schedule is not a guarantee that every job begins at an exact instant.

Store, check, and retain the images
Use a dated directory or an object-storage prefix so each run has a distinct destination. Keep a manifest with the URL, capture timestamp, viewport, capture type, and success or failure status. Decide a retention period based on the purpose of your records and storage limits; no single retention period or permission rule is established for every publisher or use case.
- Review a new image periodically for consent dialogs, bot checks, blank content, layout changes, or missing modules.
- Keep failure logs and alert on nonzero script exits if missed captures matter.
- Retain original files if later visual comparison is important; resizing or recompressing can obscure differences.
- Be aware that full-page images may grow or change shape when publishers add content or alter page length.
Common problems and fixes
- The capture runs at the wrong hour: check the scheduler’s configured timezone and documented default. Do not infer it from the operating system clock. Recheck behavior around daylight-saving transitions if the chosen timezone observes them.
- The screenshot is blank or incomplete: the page may not have finished rendering, a network request may have failed, or a bot check may be shown. Inspect the image and logs, then use a suitable page-specific wait condition. No universal wait condition is established for all news homepages.
- Navigation times out: check connectivity and the target URL, then determine whether the site is slow or blocks automated browsing. Raising the timeout can allow slow pages more time, but it cannot fix an unreachable page or a bot challenge.
- A selector wait fails: verify the selector against the current site markup and confirm that the chosen element is expected to appear in the selected viewport or state. Update the selector only after checking the live page.
- Images or lower-page content are missing: lazy-loaded items may not load until scrolled into view. Use a viewport capture if only the first screen is needed; for full-page archival, test how the specific page loads lower content before relying on it.
- Runs are missed or repeated: inspect scheduler execution logs and its timezone/DST behavior. Scheduler guarantees differ; Kubernetes specifically describes its CronJob scheduling as approximate.
