Unicode text does not need a special Playwright screenshot flag; the page must render the right glyphs before the capture.
Capture the page after its text and fonts are ready
This Node.js example uses Playwright’s Chromium browser. Replace the URL and expected text with values from the site you need to capture.

import { chromium } from 'playwright';
const browser = await chromium.launch();
const page = await browser.newPage({
viewport: { width: 1280, height: 900 },
deviceScaleFactor: 1,
});
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle' });
// Confirm that the expected text is present before taking the screenshot.
await page.getByText('नमस्ते', { exact: false }).waitFor();
// Wait for fonts used by the document to finish loading.
await page.evaluate(async () => {
await document.fonts.ready;
});
await page.screenshot({ path: 'indian-language-page.png', fullPage: true });
await browser.close();
Playwright’s networkidle condition is an example, not a universal signal that a page is ready. Pages with persistent requests may never become idle; use a suitable navigation condition and wait for a meaningful page element instead. A text locator helps distinguish “the page did not load the expected content” from “the content appeared but its glyphs did not render.”
Choose what to capture
Use the capture method that shows the evidence you need. Playwright supports viewport screenshots, full-page screenshots, and screenshots of a locator. See the Playwright screenshot documentation.
- Viewport:
await page.screenshot({ path: 'viewport.png' });captures the visible browser viewport. - Full page:
await page.screenshot({ path: 'full-page.png', fullPage: true });captures the full scrollable page. - One element:
await page.locator('selector').screenshot({ path: 'element.png' });captures the selected component.
Check missing or incorrect glyphs
document.fonts.ready waits for the document’s fonts to finish loading, but it does not prove that a font supports every character in the target language. If letters appear as empty boxes, inspect the rendered image and check whether the page’s intended font loaded successfully and whether its computed font family is the one the site expects. If the page relies on a downloadable web font, check that the font request succeeded. If it relies on fonts installed on the host system, font readiness alone cannot establish that a suitable font is installed.
Unicode text can be present in the document even when the browser cannot display the corresponding glyphs. Verify both the expected text and the resulting screenshot; a successful screenshot call only confirms that an image was captured, not that every character rendered as intended.

Keep visual comparisons repeatable
For a baseline and later comparison, keep the rendering environment and screenshot settings consistent. Playwright notes that rendering can vary with the host operating system, browser version and settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. See the Visual comparisons guide.
- Use the same browser engine and version, operating system, and headless setting.
- Keep viewport dimensions and
deviceScaleFactorfixed. The browser context API documentsdeviceScaleFactor, which defaults to 1: BrowserContext API. - Use the same font setup and page readiness checks for each capture.
- Choose screenshot scale deliberately: Playwright’s screenshot API documents
cssscale as one output pixel per CSS pixel anddevicescale as one output pixel per device pixel. A larger device-pixel image can help human review; fixed settings make CSS-layout comparisons more consistent. See the Page screenshot API.
Troubleshoot common capture problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The expected language text is missing | The page content has not loaded, or the locator does not match its text. | Wait for a page-specific element or the expected text before capturing; verify the text locator against the actual page content. |
| Text is present but appears as boxes or incorrect glyphs | The font may not contain the needed glyphs, may not have loaded, or may not be the font the page intended to use. | Wait for document.fonts.ready, inspect the font request and computed font family, then check the saved image. |
Navigation never reaches networkidle |
The page may maintain ongoing network activity. | Choose a navigation wait condition suited to the site and wait for a specific content or readiness signal instead. |
| Baseline and later screenshots differ unexpectedly | The host environment, browser, viewport, device scale, or fonts may differ. | Standardize the browser engine/version, operating system, headless mode, viewport, deviceScaleFactor, and font setup. |

ScreenshotNeo takes a screenshot from one GET request. Its clean-shot process accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. ScreenshotNeo also provides an MCP server with screenshot tools for AI agents.
