Set the language and region on a Playwright browser context before opening the news site, then verify that the intended edition actually loaded. Locale, location, viewport, and screenshot area are separate choices: configure only the ones the site needs, and capture a viewport, full page, or specific element.
Choose the intended language edition
Use the language-region tag that matches the audience and edition you want, such as hi-IN for Hindi in India. A browser locale can affect language preferences and regional formatting, but it does not guarantee that a news site will switch editions. The site may instead depend on its own language selector, URL path, cookies, or account settings.

Playwright applies locale and viewport emulation at the browser-context level, so pages created in that context inherit those settings. Its emulation guidance also covers timezone and geolocation: Playwright browser emulation. The official code-generation example pairs an Italian language setting with Rome coordinates, but that does not mean every site uses location to choose its edition: Playwright code generation.

Install Playwright in your project if it is not already installed, and use the package version already pinned there. API options can vary by version; consult the screenshot documentation for your version.

await browser.close();domcontentloaded only indicates that the initial document has been parsed; it does not prove that client-rendered headlines, images, or fonts are ready. Use a locator for a meaningful page-specific signal, such as an edition label or expected article heading, and wait for it before capture. If the site loads late content or fonts, wait for those site-specific conditions too. There is no universal wait that confirms every news site’s content is settled.
Add location only when the site uses it
Locale and geolocation are independent. If edition selection depends on a reader’s location, set the coordinates and grant permission before navigating or interacting:

If the site chooses editions using a menu, URL, or saved preference instead, configure that mechanism rather than assuming geolocation will change the page.
Capture the viewport, full page, or one element
Pick the capture type that matches what you need to inspect. These are Playwright page and locator screenshot methods:

The selector in an element capture must match the target site’s DOM. For example, use the browser inspector to identify a stable selector for the article container rather than assuming every site uses the same class or structure. Keep image dimensions consistent
Set a fixed viewport and keep it unchanged when comparing captures. A desktop viewport and a mobile viewport can produce different responsive layouts; use the intended audience’s device profile or explicit dimensions, and record them with the output.

For repeatable visual comparisons, record the locale, location and timezone assumptions, viewport, browser, and scale alongside each baseline.
Check the result before treating it as a valid capture
- Confirm the page shows the intended edition using a visible edition label, language menu state, expected URL, or relevant article heading.
- Inspect regional characters, diacritics, conjuncts, and fallback-font appearance for missing glyphs or unexpected substitutions.
- Look for clipped headlines, broken line wrapping, blank image areas, and content missing below the fold.
- Check whether late-loaded content or a consent prompt obscured the intended page.
- Use the same locale, location, viewport, browser, and scale when comparing a new image with a baseline.
Playwright’s screenshot assertions can wait for two consecutive screenshots to match, and screenshot options include controls for animations and the caret. Those controls can reduce visual noise in repeatable checks, but a stable image still does not prove the site served the correct language edition. See Playwright visual comparisons.

Troubleshoot common problems
The page remains in the wrong language
A context locale is a browser preference, not a command to a site’s editorial system. Check the site’s language menu, edition-specific URL, cookie or account preference, and confirm the selected state in the page before taking the screenshot.
The site shows the wrong regional edition
Determine whether the site selects editions from geolocation, timezone, a saved preference, or another signal. Configure only the relevant context setting, and use the site’s own edition controls if it provides them. Locale alone and geolocation alone are not interchangeable.

Do not treat document parsing as proof that client-rendered content is ready. Wait for a page-specific locator or other observable completion signal. If content is below the fold, use full-page capture; if images are loaded lazily as the page scrolls, confirm they have appeared before accepting the image.

Regional script looks wrong or text is clipped
Check the rendered page in the browser before capture. Confirm the intended language content is present, inspect font fallback and glyph rendering, and test the target viewport because a different width can change line breaks and clipping.
Images differ between runs
Fix the viewport, locale, location and timezone assumptions, browser, and screenshot scale. For visual checks, consider Playwright’s documented animation and caret controls, and use screenshot assertions where appropriate. These help with repeatability but cannot validate the editorial correctness of the page.
