To take a picture on a Samsung Galaxy phone, open Camera, choose Photo if needed, frame your subject in the viewfinder, and tap the shutter button. The camera selects settings automatically in Photo mode, and Samsung says captured photos and videos are saved in Gallery. Camera options and menus vary by model and software version, so use the controls shown in your Camera app if a setting below is missing.
Take your first picture
- Open Camera. Tap the Camera app on your phone.
- Select Photo. If another mode is active, choose Photo from the mode controls shown on your screen.
- Frame the subject. Use the viewfinder to position the person or scene. If your camera offers tap-to-focus, tap the part of the image you want in focus.
- Capture the image. Tap the shutter button. On supported phones, you may be able to configure a volume button as another shutter.
- Find the result. Open Gallery to view and manage the picture.
Samsung’s instructions cover different Galaxy interfaces, and the location and availability of controls can differ by device and software version. Follow the labels visible on your phone rather than expecting every setting to appear in the same place.

Choose a camera mode for the scene
Start with Photo for everyday pictures. Other modes can suit particular situations, but the list below is illustrative: not every Galaxy phone includes every mode or the same controls.

Take a selfie or group photo hands-free
If you have positioned the phone away from you, check Camera’s shooting-method options for alternate ways to trigger a shot. Samsung documents voice commands, showing your palm, a floating shutter button, and configurable volume-button behavior as possibilities on supported devices. The exact choices and labels vary, so use the methods available in your app.

Simple settings that can help with framing
- Grid lines or composition guides: Look for these if you want an on-screen guide to help line up a shot.
- Tap to focus: If supported, tap the important part of the scene before taking the picture.
- Other camera options: Features such as tracking autofocus, video stabilization, and image or video format choices appear in Samsung’s guidance for newer devices, but should not be assumed to exist on every Galaxy phone.
For a hands-free setup, an adjustable smartphone tripod with a phone clamp is an optional accessory to consider. Check that the clamp fits your handset and case. Samsung’s cited camera guidance does not recommend a tripod or guarantee that one will improve a picture.
When to try manual controls
Photo mode is the simplest starting point because the camera chooses settings automatically. If you want to influence how a picture is made, try Pro mode if your phone offers it. Depending on the device, you may be able to adjust ISO, shutter speed, exposure value, focus, or white balance. Change one control at a time and compare the results in Gallery so you can see what the adjustment does on your phone.

Samsung’s support pages describe camera modes and shooting methods across Galaxy devices, while its India guidance updated November 25, 2025 outlines modes and manual controls. The available features and interface can vary by model, region, and software version; the current controls in your Camera app are the practical guide to what your phone supports.
