How to Take Notes and Track Clues in a Maze-Like Horror Game

The most reliable way to stay oriented in a maze-like horror game is to keep two linked records: a rough map of rooms, junctions, doors, and landmarks, plus a clue log that records exactly what you found, where you found it, what it might mean, and what you have already tried. Use the game’s own map and journal first, because controls and features vary by title.

Why one set of notes is not enough

A map answers where. A clue log answers what and why. Combining both in one crowded page makes it harder to see either.

  • Map: rooms, junctions, doors, stairs, transitions, landmarks, visited areas, and unresolved branches.
  • Clue log: wording, images, symbols, objects, character references, possible meanings, related puzzles, and previous attempts.

Link the records with short labels. If the map calls a room “R3,” begin a clue entry with “R3 — wall dial.” That connection lets you return to the correct place without relying on memory.

Build a rough map that records connections

Start with orientation

Mark the entrance or starting location immediately. Give each room or junction a short label as you encounter it: R1, R2, North Hall, Statue Junction, or another name you can recognize quickly. Add a landmark beside the label, such as a statue, painting, unusual light, or distinctive sound. A landmark keeps the label useful when corridors look alike and you are backtracking under pressure.

#1 Best Overall
Five Star Spiral Notebook + Study App, 1 Subject, Graph Ruled Paper, 8-1/2" x 11", 100 Sheets, Fights Ink Bleed, Water Resistant Cover, Black (73679)
  • Ideal for graphing, charts and engineering projects.
  • 1-subject notebook. 100 double-sided, graph ruled sheets. 4 squares per inch.
  • Sheets measure 8-1/2 in. x 11 in. when torn out. Overall notebook size is 11 in. x 9-3/4 in. Tough pockets help prevent tears and hold 8-1/2 in. x 11 in. loose sheets.
  • High-grade paper fights ink bleed. Perforated pages for easy tear out. Front cover is water-resistant to help protect your notes all year.
  • Spiral Lock wire helps prevent snags on clothes and backpacks. Made with SFI approved paper. Recyclable - remove reinforcement tape on pocket and recycle the rest.

Do not wait until a chase or puzzle forces you to reconstruct the route. Add the starting point before exploring, then extend the map at every decision point.

Draw topology, not architecture

Your objective is to remember how spaces connect, not to create a scale floor plan. Draw a node for a room or junction and a line for a passage. Add a small note for a door, staircase, elevator, crawl space, or other transition. If two areas connect through a one-way passage, show an arrow rather than an ordinary line.

A useful map records the status of each route. Keep the symbols simple and consistent:

Map mark Meaning When to use it
Open line Route is available You have confirmed that the passage can be used in the direction shown.
Blocked mark Physical obstruction A collapse, barricade, debris pile, or other obstacle prevents passage.
Lock mark Door or route is locked The entrance exists, but a key, code, item, or event is required.
Question mark Not yet checked You know a branch exists but have not explored or verified it.
Arrow One-way movement or transition Use it for stairs, drops, ladders, portals, or passages that cannot be retraced normally.

These marks are reminders, not a universal key. If the game uses a special map system, copy its conventions or write your own legend at the edge of the page.

Update the map at the junction

When you reach a new junction, stop long enough to add it before moving deeper. Draw every visible branch, then mark the branch you take. On returning, change the status of each route based on what you learned. Mark rooms as visited, but leave unresolved branches visible so they remain on your checklist.

If the game supplies a location marker, compare your sketch against it. A digital map may reveal that two corridors are connected by a door you overlooked; your notes can then add the landmark or lock condition that the game map does not explain.

Keep a clue log separate from the map

Capture the evidence exactly

For every clue, record the exact wording, image, symbol, or sequence. Do not reduce a sentence to “something about a clock” when the precise wording may determine the solution. If a clue is visual, describe the arrangement faithfully: for example, “three scratches around the dial.” If you can safely copy a symbol or draw its order, do so.

Mead Spiral Notebook, 1 Subject, Graph Ruled Paper, 7-1/2" x 10-1/2", 100 Sheets, Black (05676AA5)
  • 1 subject notebook comes with 100 graph ruled, double-sided sheets with 5 squares per inch
  • Sheets measure 7-1/2" x 10-1/2" when torn out with an overall size of 8" x 10-1/2". Perforation easily tears out with clean edges.
  • Graph ruling is ideal for plotting graphs, drawing curves and more. Notebook is 3-hole punched to store in your favorite binder.
  • Covers are coated for durability and have writable label on front cover. Available in Black.
  • Assembled in U.S.A. with U.S. and foreign parts

Record the source location at the same time. Include the room label, the object, and any character or item involved. “R3 — painting beside west door” is more useful than “painting clue,” especially when several rooms contain similar objects.

Separate observation from interpretation

Use two lines for what you know and what you suspect:

  • Observation: “Three scratches around the dial.”
  • Hypothesis: “Probably means turn three times.”

This distinction prevents a guess from becoming false certainty. When a later clue disproves the interpretation, you can replace the hypothesis without losing the original evidence.

Connect clues to possible targets

After recording the evidence, note the puzzle, door, device, or route it might relate to. A combination may belong to a safe in another room; a character’s remark may explain an item you already collected. Write the connection as a possibility until the game confirms it.

Clue-log field Example entry Purpose
Location R3 — west wall Lets you return to the source.
Evidence Three scratches around the dial Preserves the observation without interpretation.
Related object Metal dial Identifies what you inspected.
Hypothesis May indicate three turns Stores a testable idea separately.
Possible target Locked cabinet in R1 Suggests where to investigate next.
Status Untested Shows whether the idea has been checked.

Record every attempt, including failures

Write down combinations, routes, and interactions you try, along with the result. Label each entry untested, failed, or solved. A failed attempt is useful information: it rules out a possibility and prevents you from repeating the same action later.

Include enough detail to reproduce the attempt. Instead of “tried code,” write “R1 safe: 3-1-4, failed” or “Pulled west lever before placing the key, no response.” If the game changes after an event, add that condition. A combination that failed before a cutscene may be worth testing again only when the surrounding state has changed.

Keep attempts near the related clue, but do not erase old results. Strike through an entry only after marking the replacement status. This preserves the reasoning trail when several puzzles use similar symbols or numbers.

Use a review loop before backtracking

Review your records whenever you are about to retrace a route or experiment with a device:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Look at the map for unvisited rooms, unchecked branches, locked doors, and one-way transitions.
  2. Look at the clue log for entries marked untested or unresolved.
  3. Match each unresolved clue to a location, object, character, or item that could test it.
  4. Check the attempt history so you do not repeat a failed combination or interaction under the same conditions.
  5. Choose one deliberate next action and record its result immediately.

If you have no new information and are repeating the same actions, pause rather than guessing indefinitely. Re-read the exact clue, inspect the source location, and compare it with the map. The aim is to convert uncertainty into a specific test.

Check the game’s built-in map and journal first

There is no universal map key, control, or journal layout across horror games. Before relying on an external system, open the game’s help screen, pause menu, map, and journal. Find out whether rooms appear automatically, whether the player marker is reliable, and whether clues or combinations are stored for you.

Nancy Drew: Message in a Haunted Mansion

The official guide for its maze mini-game describes a map opened with the M key and states: “Your present location is the blue dot on the map.” Treat that as a title-specific control and convention, not a rule for other games. The guide also instructs the player to write down a combination needed later, which is a good reason to keep a separate attempt and clue record even when a map is available.

Urban Legends: The Maze

A Big Fish Games walkthrough describes an in-game journal containing notes and clues, including combinations. It also says that rooms appear on the map after the player visits them. In that game, checking the journal can recover information you might otherwise copy manually, while the map helps reveal which areas have been reached. You still need to verify the instructions and controls in your own edition.

The Maze: Subject 360

Its walkthrough describes a different workflow involving a map and investigation clues. The difference matters: a map or clue system in one maze title does not establish how another title behaves. Follow the prompts and puzzle instructions shown by the game you are playing, then adapt your labels and status marks to match.

Choose a note format that you can update quickly

Paper, a digital note, and an in-game journal can all work. The practical choice depends on how quickly you can update it, whether it leaves enough room for a rough map, and whether you can keep observations separate from guesses and attempts.

  • Perforated sheets measure 11" x 8-1/2" when torn out. Overall size of 11" x 9 1/8". Available in Teal.
Format Best use Trade-off to consider
Blank or graph-paper notebook Fast sketches, arrows, room labels, and a persistent attempt history Requires manual copying when a clue changes and can be awkward if the game is being played on the same screen.
Digital note Separate pages for the map, clue log, and attempts; easy editing and search Switching away from the game can interrupt play, and a small screen may leave too little space for a map.
In-game journal Keeping notes in the game’s own context, often alongside its map or clue system Available fields, controls, and automatic entries differ by title; it may not preserve every failed attempt.

Graph paper is optional, not a requirement. An ordinary pencil or pen and a blank notebook are sufficient for the manual method. Use graph paper only if its grid makes your room connections easier to arrange.

A complete note-taking workflow

1. Prepare the page before moving

Reserve one area for the map and another for the clue log. Add a small status legend: open, blocked, locked, unchecked, and one-way. Write the starting location and its landmark.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Map the first decision point

Draw the starting room, each visible branch, and the route you take. Label the junction before entering the next corridor. If a door is locked, record the lock on the map and create a clue-log entry only if the door supplies a clue or requirement.

3. Add each new room at the moment you discover it

Give it a short label, write one identifying landmark, and connect it to the previous node. Mark visited rooms and leave unexplored branches as unchecked. Add arrows for stairs or other transitions that cannot be treated as ordinary two-way corridors.

4. Log evidence before interpreting it

Copy exact text, draw or describe symbols, identify the source object, and note the room label. Then add a separate hypothesis and possible target. If the game displays a combination, preserve the order and punctuation rather than relying on memory.

5. Test one idea at a time

When you try a route, code, or interaction, write the action and result. Mark it untested before the attempt, failed or solved afterward, and add any new condition revealed by the result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Review before returning

Use the map to select an unchecked branch and the clue log to select an unresolved connection. If neither record suggests a new test, inspect the original clue and its source instead of cycling through old guesses.

Troubleshoot common note-taking problems

“Every corridor looks the same.”

Replace directional descriptions such as “left hallway” with a room label plus a landmark. “R4 — red light near the broken portrait” remains useful after you turn around; “left from the entrance” may not.

“My map is becoming a tangle.”

Stop drawing architectural detail. Keep nodes for rooms and junctions, lines for connections, and short notes for doors or landmarks. If two floors overlap on the page, draw a separate section for each floor and connect them with a labeled arrow.

“I cannot remember whether I tried a code.”

Move every combination or interaction into the attempt history and give it a status. Do not rely on a check mark with no result; record the actual sequence and outcome.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“I have too many possible meanings for one clue.”

Keep the original observation unchanged and list hypotheses separately. Test one interpretation at a time, marking each as failed or solved. This prevents a discarded guess from being mistaken for what the game actually showed.

“The game’s map does not match my sketch.”

Compare them at a known landmark rather than trying to align the entire drawing. Confirm the player marker, check whether the game reveals rooms only after visiting them, and update your sketch with the missing connection or lock condition.

A compact template you can copy

Keep the template short enough to use while playing. Its value comes from updating it at the moment of discovery, not from producing a beautiful map after the fact.

The practical rule to remember

Map connections and landmarks as you move, log clues at their source, distinguish observations from hypotheses, and preserve every attempt’s result. Then verify the specific game’s map, journal, and controls before assuming that another title works the same way.
