On Kindle Scribe models released in 2025 or later, you can search handwritten notebook content from the universal search bar. Open the search bar at the top of the screen, type or handwrite a keyword, press Enter, and open a notebook result by its page number. For access on a phone or computer, share the notebook as a searchable PDF or export it through a supported cloud service.
Writing notes and searching them are separate capabilities. The Scribe pen and notebook tools let you capture handwriting on supported Scribe generations, while Amazon’s cited handwritten-search and searchable-PDF workflows are specifically documented for models released in 2025 or later. Check your Scribe’s generation before relying on these instructions.

What you need to know before starting
Amazon has released several Kindle Scribe generations. The instructions in this guide use the model qualification in Amazon’s help pages: handwritten notebook search and the documented searchable-PDF workflow apply to Kindle Scribe models released in 2025 or later. Older models may still let you write in notebooks, but you should not assume that the same on-device search or conversion options are available.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHandwriting recognition is also language-specific. Amazon lists support for English (United Kingdom and United States), French (Canada and France), German, Spanish, Italian, Dutch, Portuguese (Brazil), Russian, and Chinese (Simplified) with Pinyin. That list describes supported recognition languages; it is not a guarantee that every word, handwriting style, or page element will be recognized.

Check these conditions before you depend on search
- Confirm the Scribe model’s release generation if handwritten search or searchable-PDF conversion is essential to your workflow.
- Connect the device to the internet. Amazon’s search can include notebooks and Library books that are not downloaded locally, so connectivity matters for cloud-backed content.
- Install current device software before troubleshooting recognition.
- Choose the recognition language that matches the language you will actually write.
- Keep the original notebook when accuracy or visual fidelity matters; converted text is an additional representation, not a replacement for the page.
How to write handwritten notes on Kindle Scribe
Open or create a notebook
- Open an existing notebook or create a new one from the Kindle Scribe notebook area.
- Use the Scribe pen to write on the page. Your handwriting remains the notebook’s native page content until you choose an export or conversion action.
- To move between pages while a writing tool is selected, swipe with a finger. This lets you turn pages without accidentally making pen marks.
Use the writing toolbar
The writing toolbar provides the core controls Amazon documents for notebook writing:
- Pen: writes standard pen strokes.
- Highlighter: marks content with highlighting.
- Eraser: removes handwriting or highlighting.
- Undo and Redo: reverse or restore recent changes.
Double-tap Pen, Highlighter, or Eraser to open that tool’s custom options. Set the option you need, then continue writing. Keep in mind that handwriting made with the highlighter is one of the content types Amazon says recognition does not currently support, so use the pen for words you expect to search or convert.
Organize while you write
Use separate notebooks for genuinely different subjects, projects, or recurring meetings. This does not change the recognition engine, but it reduces the number of results you must inspect later. Give a notebook a name that you are likely to remember when you need it; notebook search results identify the notebook and include page numbers.
Recommended Free Tools
A simple naming pattern helps when several notebooks cover similar topics. For example, use a project name and a year or meeting series rather than leaving every notebook with a generic title. Put the most important identifying word in the title and repeat it in the first few lines of the notebook. This gives you two ways to confirm that a result belongs to the right set of notes.
Write for easier recognition
Use the pen rather than the highlighter for words that must be found later. Keep ordinary handwriting in portrait orientation, because Amazon lists landscape-mode writing as unsupported for recognition. Leave enough separation between words to make the page easier to inspect when a result opens. Diagrams, arrows, equations, and sketches can stay on the same page as your writing, but treat them as visual material rather than text that the Scribe will reliably index.
How to search handwritten notes on Kindle Scribe
On an eligible Scribe released in 2025 or later, search starts from the universal search bar, not from a special notebook-only screen.
- Tap the universal search bar at the top of any screen.
- Enter a keyword by typing it, or write the keyword in the search canvas at the bottom of the screen.
- Tap Enter to submit the search.
- Review the results. Amazon groups results from areas such as the Kindle Store, Library, and notebooks.
- Choose the notebook result you need. Notebook results show page numbers, so open the result associated with the relevant page.
Amazon says search can include notebooks and Library books even when they are not downloaded locally. That means a missing local download is not, by itself, proof that a notebook cannot appear in results; the device still needs a working internet connection for cloud-backed content and recognition services.
Typing versus handwriting the query
Typing the keyword is useful when you know the exact spelling or want to avoid ambiguity in the search canvas. Handwriting the query can be faster when the Scribe pen is already in your hand. Both methods submit through the same search bar and Enter action.

Search for a distinctive word rather than a broad term when a notebook contains many pages. For example, a project name, person’s surname, or unusual subject term should narrow the result list more effectively than a common word. These are search choices, not separate Scribe features; recognition still depends on the supported language and readable source handwriting.
How to verify a result
Use the page number as a navigation aid, not as a guarantee that every occurrence was found. Open the page and scan the surrounding lines, headings, and marks. If the result seems unrelated, try a second distinctive keyword from the same note. A miss can reflect a recognition limitation rather than an absent word, especially when the page includes slanted writing, highlighting, a drawing, or an equation.
Language and handwriting conditions that affect results
Set the notebook’s recognition language to match the language you used when writing. A mismatch can prevent expected words from being found or converted correctly. Amazon’s documented list is:
| Language | Regional qualification listed by Amazon |
|---|---|
| English | United Kingdom and United States |
| French | Canada and France |
| German | Listed without a regional qualifier |
| Spanish | Listed without a regional qualifier |
| Italian | Listed without a regional qualifier |
| Dutch | Listed without a regional qualifier |
| Portuguese | Brazil |
| Russian | Listed without a regional qualifier |
| Chinese (Simplified) | Pinyin |
Recognition is not documented for every visual form of writing. Amazon’s troubleshooting guidance says it does not currently support slanted writing, writing made with the highlighter, writing in landscape mode, drawings, diagrams, or equations. A page can therefore be perfectly visible as an image while still failing to produce a useful text match.
If you routinely mix languages in one notebook, remember that the selected recognition language is still a constraint. Separate notebooks by primary language when possible, or expect to inspect pages manually when a mixed-language term is missed. Search support should be treated as a practical index, not as proof that every stroke has been transcribed.
Ways to find notes away from the Scribe
On supported 2025-or-later models, a searchable PDF gives you an external copy whose text can be looked up on a phone or computer. The conversion route and destination determine what you receive.
| Method | What it provides | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| On-device universal search | Searches handwritten notebook content and returns notebook page numbers | Documented by Amazon for Scribe models released in 2025 or later |
| Convert to text and email preview | A searchable PDF sent through the email-sharing workflow | The email sharing link expires after seven days; edits made during the preview are not included in the produced searchable PDF |
| Google Drive or Microsoft OneDrive export | Handwriting PDFs, converted-text files, or searchable PDFs | Available on supported Scribe models released in 2025 or later |
| Microsoft OneNote export | Handwriting images, converted text, or both | Available as a documented notebook export destination on supported models |
Which file type should you choose?
A handwriting PDF is the safest choice when the exact visual page matters, such as annotated forms, signatures, layouts, or notes that rely on spacing. Converted text is more convenient for copying into another document, but it can omit unsupported content or change words during recognition. A searchable PDF combines the page image with a text layer, making it useful when you want to preserve the appearance and still use text lookup on another device.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Email a searchable PDF
- Open the notebook you want to send.
- Choose the notebook sharing action and select a Convert to text route that produces a searchable PDF.
- Complete the email-sharing steps shown on the Scribe.
- Open the message on your phone or computer and download the PDF before the sharing link expires.
The seven-day expiration applies to the email sharing link, not to the existence of your original notebook on the Scribe. Also distinguish the preview from your source notebook: Amazon notes that edits made during the Convert to text and email preview are not included in the searchable PDF produced by that route.

- All-new Kindle Scribe – Features an 11” glare-free display with front light, built-in notebook, AI tools, and support for popular cloud services.
- Get a pen-on-paper feel – The textured surface and responsive display create a smooth, paper-like writing experience. Plus, the included pen never needs charging and has a built-in eraser and shortcut button for tools like the highlighter.
- More room to read, write, and think – At just 5.4mm thin and 400g light, it’s redesigned for comfort, with a larger 11" display and 40% faster writing and page turns.
- Work comfortably in any light – The display automatically adapts brightness to your lighting conditions. Adjust the warmth for greater comfort at night.
- Get more out of your notes – Take notes in the built-in notebook, then use AI to find information, ask questions about what you’ve written, and generate summaries. You can also clean up handwriting or convert it to text.
After downloading, test the file with a distinctive word before you rely on it. Open the PDF on your phone or computer, use its find command, and compare one or two hits with the original Scribe page. This quick check reveals whether the chosen language and writing style converted as expected.
Export to Google Drive or Microsoft OneDrive
Supported 2025-or-later Scribe models can send notebook pages to Google Drive or Microsoft OneDrive in one of three forms: a handwriting PDF, converted text, or a searchable PDF. Choose the format based on the job:
- Use a handwriting PDF when preserving the page’s visual appearance matters most.
- Use converted text when you need editable text and accept that recognition may change the wording or omit unsupported elements.
- Use a searchable PDF when you want the original page appearance together with text lookup on another device.
Cloud export is a destination choice, not a different recognition engine. The same language requirements and limitations apply regardless of whether the file goes to Drive or OneDrive. Keep the cloud copy organized with a notebook name and date so a later search result can be matched to the correct original.
Send a notebook to Microsoft OneNote
Amazon documents Microsoft OneNote as another destination. The export can contain handwriting images, converted text, or both. This is useful when the notebook needs to sit alongside other OneNote material, but the same recognition limitations apply to converted text.
Choose handwriting images when the page itself is the record. Choose converted text when you need to edit wording, and choose both when you want an editable transcription alongside a visual reference. OneNote does not remove the need to verify names, numbers, equations, or other details that recognition may misread.
Share only selected pages
You do not have to send an entire notebook. Use the notebook overview’s page-selection workflow:
- Open the notebook overview.
- Tap Select.
- Choose the pages you want.
- Use the bulk-action toolbar to share, move, add, or delete the selected pages.
- For sharing, choose whether to send the selected pages or the whole notebook.
- For conversion, use the documented option that sends a TXT file together with a PDF of the handwriting.
This is the practical route for a meeting excerpt, a single chapter of notes, or a few pages that need to be reviewed elsewhere. Selecting pages first also avoids creating an unnecessarily large conversion job.
Before confirming a bulk action, review the page thumbnails and count the selection. The same overview tools can add, delete, move, or share pages, so an accidental tap can affect organization as well as export. If the recipient needs context, include the first page of the section even when it contains little searchable text.

Troubleshooting search and conversion
No notebook result appears
- Check the Scribe generation. The cited handwritten-search instructions are for models released in 2025 or later.
- Check connectivity. Connect the device to the internet, especially when the notebook or Library content is not stored locally.
- Check the recognition language. Set it to the language used in the notebook and keep it within Amazon’s listed language support.
- Update the device software. Amazon’s troubleshooting guidance calls for current software when recognition does not behave as expected.
- Try a distinctive term. A rare word is easier to verify in results than a common word that may appear on many pages.
The result opens the wrong page or misses a word
Review the page itself rather than treating a failed match as proof that the text is absent. Slanted writing, highlighter strokes, landscape-mode writing, drawings, diagrams, and equations are documented recognition limitations. If the note combines ordinary pen handwriting with one of those elements, only the supported handwriting may be searchable.
Conversion is taking a long time
Amazon says conversion of larger synced notebooks containing 100 or more pages can take over 10 minutes. Keep the Scribe connected and allow the process to finish before starting another conversion. If you need only a few pages, return to the notebook overview and select those pages instead of converting the entire notebook.
The exported PDF does not show an edit
Check which sharing route you used. Amazon specifically notes that edits made during the Convert to text and email preview are not included in the searchable PDF produced by that preview. Make the required changes in the source notebook, then start a new conversion and sharing operation.

Compare the successful and unsuccessful pages. A change in orientation, tool, language, or handwriting style may explain the difference. Highlighter-only words, landscape pages, diagrams, equations, and slanted writing are all documented reasons for recognition to fail. Preserve those pages as handwriting PDFs when their visual content is important.

|---|---|---|
| Jump to a handwritten note while using the Scribe | Universal search bar | Search by typed or handwritten keyword and open the notebook result by page number |
| Search notes on a phone or computer | Searchable PDF | Preserves a page-based document while adding text lookup outside the device |
| Keep the page appearance only | Handwriting PDF | Retains the visual handwriting without requiring converted text |

| Send just a few pages | Notebook overview, Select, then share or convert | Limits the operation to the pages you choose |
A reliable note-to-retrieval routine
- Confirm eligibility: verify that the Scribe model was released in 2025 or later if you need handwritten search or searchable-PDF conversion.
- Choose the language: match the notebook’s recognition language to the language you will write.
- Write searchable content with the pen: reserve the highlighter for visual emphasis, not words you need recognized.
- Keep unsupported elements separate: treat diagrams, equations, landscape pages, and slanted writing as visual content that may not be searchable.
- Search on the device first: use the top search bar, enter a keyword, press Enter, and follow the notebook page number.
- Export when external access matters: choose a searchable PDF, converted text, handwriting PDF, or OneNote destination according to your purpose.
- For large notebooks, plan for processing time: a synced notebook of 100 or more pages may take over 10 minutes to convert.
- Verify important output: open the exported file, search for a distinctive term, and compare the hit with the original page before deleting or changing the source notebook.
What the Scribe workflow can and cannot do
The Scribe is strongest when you want handwritten pages that remain visually faithful while still being retrievable through supported search. The top-bar search and page-number results make on-device retrieval direct, and searchable-PDF export extends that retrieval to other devices.
It is not a universal handwriting-recognition system. Recognition depends on an eligible model, an internet connection, current software, a supported language, and writing that falls within Amazon’s documented conditions. Highlighted strokes, drawings, diagrams, equations, slanted writing, and landscape-mode writing can remain visible without becoming searchable text. Treat converted output as a convenience for lookup and reuse, while keeping the original notebook or handwriting PDF when exact page appearance matters.
