To capture a page behind a login, use a browser automation tool such as Playwright that can sign in or load an authenticated browser session, then take a screenshot with fullPage: true. Login and capture are separate steps: a screenshot service given only a URL cannot be assumed to share your browser’s signed-in session.
What “full-page” means—and why login is separate
A full-page screenshot includes the page’s scrollable content below the visible viewport. In Playwright, the Page screenshot option is fullPage; it defaults to false. The browser must also be authenticated and viewing the intended page when the screenshot is taken.

You can establish that session by automating the site’s login flow or by loading saved authentication state. A tool that receives only a URL does not automatically inherit cookies from your regular browser. Sites with multi-factor authentication, single sign-on, bot checks, or changing page content may need site-specific handling; no general workflow guarantees compatibility with every site.
Use Playwright with saved authentication state
This approach is useful when you can sign in in a browser once, save its state, and reuse that state in a later capture script. The example uses Node.js and Playwright. Replace the example URL with the protected page you are authorized to access.

1. Install Playwright
In a new project, install the package and its browser:

npx playwright install chromium2. Sign in and save the session
Create save-auth.js. Replace the example login URL and selectors with those used by your site. This script pauses so you can complete a manual sign-in, including any multi-factor step, in the opened browser.

})();Run it with node save-auth.js. After signing in, resume execution in Playwright Inspector. The state file can contain cookies and headers that could let someone impersonate the account. Keep it private, restrict access, and exclude it from source control; do not use a shared or public repository to store it.

3. Load the state and capture the whole page
Create capture.js in the same project directory:

If the page has ongoing network activity that prevents the navigation wait from settling, choose a site-specific readiness condition instead—for example, wait for a known page element with page.waitForSelector('main') before taking the screenshot. The required selector depends on the page.
Automate login instead of reusing saved state
If your site permits scripted sign-in, the same browser context can log in and capture without saving state for reuse. Use selectors that match the actual page, and avoid putting real credentials in source code or committed files.

})();Set SITE_USER and SITE_PASSWORD in your environment before running the script. The field names, submit control, and post-login URL pattern are examples; adapt them to the site. If login requires an interactive challenge or a flow the script cannot complete, use a manually authenticated browser session instead.

Other browser-tool option: Playwright MCP
Playwright MCP exposes browser screenshot capture through a browser-tool interface, including full-page capture. It still operates on a browser-controlled page, so authentication must be established in that browser context. Its screenshot tool supports a viewport, an element, or the full scrollable page; full-page capture cannot be combined with targeting a specific element.

The screenshot shows a login page
The saved state may be expired, may belong to a different browser context, or may not include the authentication data the site needs. Sign in again and save fresh state. If the site uses a separate sign-in domain, make sure the saved session was created after completing that flow.
The page is incomplete or still loading
Navigation completing does not always mean that client-rendered content or lazy-loaded images are ready. Wait for a page-specific element or other readiness signal before capturing. For long pages, test with a smaller capture or a representative route first; pages with very large dimensions can exhaust browser memory and crash.

The script times out during navigation
A page with persistent network activity may not reach the chosen navigation condition. Increase the timeout only if the page genuinely needs more time; otherwise, wait for a specific element that indicates the content you need has rendered.
The login automation fails
Check that the selectors match the current login form and that the script waits for the site’s actual post-login state. Multi-factor authentication, single sign-on, and bot checks can require site-specific or interactive handling; a generic script cannot guarantee those flows.

Authentication state can be sensitive and may stop working when the site expires or invalidates it. Create a fresh state file when needed, limit who can access it, and keep it out of source control. If it was exposed, treat it as a credential and follow the site’s account-security process to revoke or replace the session.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a screenshot API use the login session from my normal browser?
Not unless the workflow explicitly provides that session to the service. A URL alone does not carry your browser’s cookies.
Can I capture only one element with a full-page screenshot?
Playwright MCP’s documented screenshot interface does not combine full-page capture with an element target; choose either the full scrollable page or a targeted element.
