You can take better travel photos with the phone you already carry by working in a simple order: compose a clean frame, focus and adjust brightness, use available light carefully, steady the phone for night shots, then edit only what needs fixing. Camera features differ across iPhone and Galaxy models, so use the controls available on your device rather than expecting every menu or mode to match.
1. Compose the frame before you shoot
Turn on your camera’s grid or composition aid, then use it to level the horizon and keep prominent buildings or other vertical lines straight. On iPhone, Apple’s Grid and Level options are in Settings > Camera. On Samsung Galaxy phones, look for Composition guide or Grid lines; the names and availability depend on the model and software version.

Before using digital zoom, move closer, step back, or change your angle. A small change in position can make the foreground, subject, and background relate more clearly. Look for one obvious subject—such as a person, landmark, or market stall—and avoid letting busy edges or a bright patch of sky compete with it.

iPhone composition controls
Enable Grid and Level from Settings > Camera if those options are available on your iPhone. A camera timer can help when you want to appear in the photo; Apple documents timer controls in the Camera app, though the exact interface can vary by model and iOS release. Samsung Galaxy composition controls
On One UI 7, Samsung’s path is Camera > quick control > Settings > Composition guide. On older software, look for Camera > Settings > Grid lines. Samsung notes that features and settings vary by model and software version. See Samsung’s guidance on using Composition guide.
2. Focus on the subject and set brightness
Tap the main subject on screen to place focus. If the photo looks too bright or too dark, adjust exposure rather than repeatedly tapping at random. On iPhone, the exposure control appears by the focus point; you can also touch and hold to lock focus and exposure. Exact controls vary across iPhone models and iOS releases. Watch what happens to the rest of the scene when you change brightness. If a bright sky or lamp overwhelms the frame, reducing exposure can preserve more detail there, but may make a person or foreground too dark. Try changing your angle or moving the subject into softer light before compromising one part of the image for another.
3. Use the light you have
For people, soft daylight or open shade is often easier to work with than harsh direct sun. If sunlight is behind your subject, turn so the light falls from the side, or adjust exposure after tapping the subject. Samsung warns that strong direct light can produce both overexposed and underexposed areas, and recommends cleaning the camera lens and changing the angle when glare or lighting harms the result. Its camera composition and image guidance covers those practical checks.

- For portraits: Look for even shade or soft light, and keep distracting bright areas out of the background.
- For a landmark: Change position until the shape is clear and the light reveals its details.
- For glare: Wipe the lens and shift your angle rather than assuming the camera is at fault.
4. Take steadier night photos
Night modes use longer or more involved captures than a quick daylight snapshot. Hold the phone still until the capture finishes, and avoid flash when you want the ambient light of a street, building, or interior to remain visible. Whether Night mode exists, how it is activated, and which controls it offers depend on the phone model and software.
Night mode on iPhone
On supported iPhones, Night mode turns on automatically in low light and brightens the photo while capturing more detail. The phone sets the exposure time automatically, with manual options on supported devices. Keep the phone steady for the full capture. Apple Support advises: “Use a tripod for even more detailed Night mode photos.” Read Apple’s Night mode instructions for supported-device details.

For a solo travel photo, set a timer, place the phone on a stable surface or tripod, include some surroundings so the location is part of the frame, and take more than one composition. The timer helps avoid touching the phone at the moment of capture; check your own Camera app for its available options.
Night mode on Samsung Galaxy
On Galaxy devices where the feature is available, open Camera > More > Night. Samsung US Support says that Night mode uses multi-frame processing to combine 30 images into one clear photo. That is Samsung’s description of its mode, not a general claim about every Galaxy model or every smartphone. For long exposures of static scenes or night skies, Samsung recommends a stable tripod and a remote or timed shutter to avoid movement from touching the phone to release the shutter. Start with the fixes that solve visible problems: crop away distractions, straighten a tilted horizon, then make modest adjustments to light and color. Compare the result with the original before saving so you can catch edits that make skin, skies, or nighttime colors look unnatural.

If you want more control after capture and are willing to edit, Samsung’s Expert RAW app is downloadable from Galaxy Store and is available on Galaxy S20 or later, according to Samsung. It saves JPEG and RAW files (Linear DNG 16-bit) and offers manual control over ISO, shutter speed, white balance, exposure, and focus. RAW is not automatically the better choice: it adds an editing step and produces larger files than compressed JPEG. Advanced options, including astrophotography support, have narrower device requirements, so check the current documentation for your exact phone before relying on them. Samsung also warns that high-resolution processing can lengthen the interval between rapid shots. Details are in Samsung’s Expert RAW guide.
Choose the simplest method that fits the shot

If you buy a tripod for travel, compare packed size, stability, phone-holder compatibility, and whether the remote is usable with your phone. A tripod is optional; no particular model is established as best for these uses.
