How to Take Better Portraits with the Galaxy S26 Ultra and Pixel 11 Pro

For stronger portraits on either phone, start with the right framing and soft light, move the subject away from a distracting background, then use Portrait mode and check focus and edge blur before you leave the scene. Pixel 11 Pro offers High-Res Portrait Mode, Camera Coach, Real Tone and Portrait Light editing; Galaxy S26 Ultra offers several rear-camera views and documented exposure and capture controls. Those feature lists do not establish which phone produces better portraits.

Set up the portrait before opening the camera

Choose the kind of picture first: a close headshot, half-body portrait, environmental portrait, selfie or group shot. For a cleaner subject outline, give the person some space from the background and watch for bright, high-contrast objects that appear to grow out of their head or shoulders. Step back or change your position if the framing feels cramped rather than relying on a tight crop.

Use the rear camera when you can direct the subject and want more control over framing. Use the front camera when self-framing or convenience matters. Google lists autofocus and a 103-degree ultrawide field of view for the Pixel 11 Pro front camera; Samsung lists a 12 MP front camera at f/2.2 for Galaxy S26 Ultra. These specifications do not show which phone takes the better selfie portrait. Google Pixel 11 Pro specifications; Samsung Galaxy S26 series announcement.

Choose a camera view and portrait mode

On Galaxy S26 Ultra

Open the Camera app and select Portrait mode for a blurred-background look. The phone has a 200 MP wide rear camera at f/1.4, a 50 MP telephoto with 5x optical zoom and 10x optical-quality zoom at f/2.9, a 10 MP telephoto with 3x optical zoom at f/2.4, and a 50 MP ultrawide camera. These are specifications, not a guarantee that every view is available in Portrait mode; controls can vary by shooting mode and software. Choose the view that gives you natural framing and room around the subject, rather than assuming the highest zoom is best. Samsung’s specifications and feature descriptions.

MIAO LAB 2X Telephoto Portrait Master Lens for iPhone, Samsung, Android - 50mm F1.05 Portrait Lens, 17mm Threaded Interface with Universal Clip for Portraits, Flowers, Food, Pets & Night Scenes
  • [50mm Classic Portrait Focal Length – Natural Perspective, No Distortion]The 50mm focal length is widely regarded as the gold standard for portrait photography, delivering natural facial proportions and pleasing spatial compression—avoiding the unflattering perspective distortion common with wide-angle phone cameras. Perfect for portraits, street photography, family gatherings, and everyday storytelling with true-to-life results.
  • [F1.05 Ultra-Large Aperture – Genuine Optical Bokeh & Stunning Low-Light Performance] The massive F1.05 aperture creates exceptionally smooth, creamy background blur (bokeh) that makes your subject stand out with professional-grade depth. Unlike software-based portrait modes that struggle with edge detection and unnatural blur, this lens delivers genuine optical depth of field—tack-sharp focus on your subject with beautifully blurred transitions. Ideal for low-light and night portraits.
  • [Premium 7-Element/6-Group Optical Design with Nano AR Coating] Features 7 optical elements arranged in 6 groups with nano-level AR anti-reflective multi-coating on every surface. This advanced optical system effectively suppresses ghosting, flare, and internal reflections while delivering exceptional contrast, true color reproduction, and edge-to-edge sharpness with minimal chromatic aberration.
  • [2X Optical Lossless Magnification – Crisper Than Digital Crop] Works seamlessly with your phone's primary camera to achieve 2X optical magnification at the pixel level. Unlike digital cropping that sacrifices detail and introduces noise, this lens delivers genuine optical magnification with preserved resolution and clarity—perfect for composing tighter portraits or capturing fine details without compromising image quality.
  • [72mm Professional Filter Thread – Expand Your Creative Toolkit] The front 72mm filter thread accepts professional ND, CPL, black mist, and UV filters, unlocking endless creative possibilities for any shooting scenario. Whether you're shooting in bright sunlight, reducing reflections, or capturing cinematic night scenes, filter compatibility gives you full creative control. (Filters sold separately.)

On Pixel 11 Pro

Select Portrait mode when you want background blur. Google also lists High-Res Portrait Mode up to 50 MP. That is the mode’s stated maximum, not a promise that every portrait is captured at 50 MP. Pixel 11 Pro’s rear cameras are a 50 MP wide, 48 MP ultrawide with Macro Focus, and 48 MP 5x telephoto with optical image stabilization. Camera Coach is listed as a feature, but Google’s specification page does not guarantee a particular prompt or result in every scene. Google Pixel 11 Pro technical specifications.

Before shooting, check that the whole subject fits in the frame and that the background looks intentional. If the camera viewfinder lets you select a face or eye area, do so; then check playback to confirm the eyes are sharp. Take several frames when expression or movement is changing.

MIAO LAB 28X Telephoto Lens for iPhone/Samsung/Android & Most Smartphones
  • Get Closer To Everyday Distant Moments: Bring distant sports events, birds, boats and travel landmarks closer when your phone camera cannot reach. The 28X optical telephoto lens is designed for stable outdoor subjects approximately 49–262 ft / 15–80 m away, making everyday long-distance observation and smartphone photography more accessible.
  • Wider, More Natural Telephoto View: Compared with many higher-power phone telescopes, the 28X design provides a wider field of view and makes distant subjects easier to find and frame. It is a practical choice for beginners who prefer a more natural telephoto view instead of an extremely narrow image.
  • Smaller Edge Darkening—Phone Models May Vary: Designed to reduce edge darkening on many smartphones. Because camera position and sensor size vary, some newer multi-camera phones may still show slight dark edges at 1X. Center the lens over the main camera and apply a small amount of phone zoom when needed.
  • Manual Focus For Clearer Distant Detail: Rotate the focus ring slowly until your subject appears sharp. At 28X magnification, even small hand movements become visible, so brace your arms or use a tripod for clearer photos and video. For moving subjects, set your position and focus before the moment begins.Tripod is recommended and sold separately.
  • Universal Clip For Popular Smartphones: Works with many iPhone, Samsung Galaxy, Google Pixel and Android main cameras. Remove thick phone cases, identify the main 1X camera, center the lens carefully and disable automatic macro or lens switching when possible. The aluminum body also works as a compact handheld monocular for travel and outdoor observation.

Use light and stillness to improve the result

Soft, even light is a reliable starting point: turn the subject toward a bright window or open shade, and avoid harsh light that creates deep shadows across the face. In dim conditions, first make sure the face is bright enough and ask the subject to hold still. Samsung’s general Galaxy camera guidance warns that Portrait blur may not apply properly when the phone or subject moves, or when the subject and background are difficult to distinguish. That is general Galaxy guidance, not a controlled S26 Ultra portrait test. Samsung’s Galaxy S26 camera guide.

Samsung says the S26 Ultra’s wider apertures let more light reach the sensor and reports 47% more light on its 200 MP wide camera and 37% more on its 50 MP 5x telephoto than the Galaxy S25 Ultra. Those are Samsung’s own comparisons; they do not establish that the S26 Ultra beats Pixel 11 Pro for low-light portraits. Samsung also documents a Night mode for photos and recommends tapping the moon icon when it appears. The cited materials provide no equivalent head-to-head low-light portrait result for the Pixel. Make capture steadier and easier

If holding the phone makes framing awkward, use a hands-free capture option supported by the camera mode. Samsung’s S26 guide documents volume-button capture, voice commands, a floating shutter and palm gesture among shooting-method options; it also describes exposure controls, aspect ratio, resolution and composition guide in quick controls. Availability can vary by mode. A tripod or clamp with a remote shutter is another optional approach, but compatibility for a particular accessory is not established here. Edit with the original in mind

Pixel lists Real Tone, Face Unblur, Portrait blur and Portrait Light among its camera and editing features. Samsung describes AI image processing for selfie detail and skin tones under mixed lighting, as well as Photo Assist edits. Treat these as tools to try, not guaranteed outcomes: compare an edited portrait with its original and keep the original if you want an unaltered reference. Samsung says Photo Assist may require network access and a Samsung Account; availability varies by country, language or model, generated output may carry a visible AI watermark, and its accuracy and reliability are not guaranteed.
