For hands-free photos, partly fold the phone and set it on a stable surface, then trigger the shutter with a timer or another supported hands-free control. The exact modes and controls vary by brand and generation.
Choose the inner camera or the rear cameras
Use the inner camera for a straightforward selfie
When the phone is open, the inner camera is the simple option for a conventional front-facing selfie. It avoids switching displays or repositioning the phone, and is useful when you want to see yourself while composing.

Use the rear cameras when you want their view or lens choices
On supported foldables, you can frame yourself on the cover or outer display while the rear cameras point toward you. This lets you compose with the rear camera array instead of the inward-facing camera. Google calls the Pixel Fold workflow Rear Camera Selfie; Samsung describes cover-screen preview and folded Quick shot selfies on specified Galaxy Z Flip models.

Frame a rear-camera selfie on the cover screen
- Check that your phone supports the mode. Open its camera app and look for a rear-camera selfie, screen-switch, or cover-screen camera option. The label and route differ by manufacturer and model.
- Point the rear cameras toward yourself. Use the cover or outer display as the viewfinder and adjust your position until the framing looks right.
- Pick a lens that fits the scene. If the mode offers an ultrawide lens, select it when you need to fit more people into the frame. Google’s Pixel Fold guidance specifically describes choosing the 0.6 ultrawide option for group selfies; that control and lens are not universal.
- Take the shot without jostling the phone. Use a timer, palm trigger, voice shutter, or volume button if your model supports it. Details are in the hands-free section below.
Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip guidance says supported models can use the cover screen for camera preview and folded Quick shots. The available PHOTO, VIDEO, and PORTRAIT options vary by generation. For the Z Flip4, Z Flip5, and Z Flip6, Samsung also documents setting the aspect ratio while the phone is open so it carries over to Quick shots.
Use the hinge for hands-free group photos
Set the phone up before joining the group
- Choose a stable surface. Partly fold the phone and place it where the intended camera can see everyone. Check that it will not slide or tip.
- Adjust the angle and frame the group. Make sure the hinge holds the chosen position and that the camera view includes everyone. Flex mode is model-specific; Samsung cautions that “Flex mode is supported only within a certain angle range.”
- Set a hands-free shutter control. Choose a timer, palm recognition, voice command, or volume-button shutter if available on your phone.
- Step into place and wait for the shutter. Avoid touching or moving the phone after framing it.
Google’s Pixel Fold camera help describes tabletop group photos and timer choices of 3 or 10 seconds. It also documents a palm trigger after selecting a timer, and a voice trigger that starts a three-second delay. Google’s Pixel Fold camera article recommends a stable surface or stand for hands-free shots.

Samsung describes taking photos in Flex mode with the Z Flip held or placed on a flat surface, adjusting the top-cover angle, choosing a front or rear lens, and tapping Capture. Listed Z Flip models also support hands-free options such as voice commands and palm recognition. On the Z Flip6 and later, Samsung describes FlexCam auto framing; its auto-zoom range is shorter than standard zoom.
When the inner camera is the better fit
Use the inner camera when it gives you the composition you want and you do not need the rear cameras or a cover-screen viewfinder. For a group, first check whether your selected camera mode provides a wide enough view; an ultrawide lens may be available with the rear cameras, but it is not guaranteed across devices or modes.

Other foldable camera modes are model-specific
Some foldables provide shooting layouts beyond selfies and tabletop portraits. Treat these as examples tied to named devices, not features shared by all foldables.
- Pixel Fold: Google documents a tabletop interface in which the phone rests with its outer screen down and the rear cameras aimed at the subject. Its support page also describes dual-screen video preview for specified Pixel Fold generations.
- Galaxy Z Flip: Samsung documents cover-screen video on the Z Flip3 and later, with available cover-screen modes varying by generation. Its guidance describes Camcorder mode on the Z Flip6 and later, using the partly folded phone held sideways.
- Motorola: Motorola’s camera help describes folding a supported phone 90 degrees for Camcorder mode, choosing a camera with Quick capture, and mirroring the camera view on the external display. These instructions apply to supported Motorola models, not every foldable.
When to use an optional stand
A table and the phone’s hinge may provide all the support you need. If you cannot get a stable position, suitable camera height, or the framing you want from the hinge and available surfaces, an adjustable smartphone tripod stand is an optional alternative. Whichever setup you use, check stability before stepping away.
