For sharper periscope zoom photos, use the telephoto view on a distant subject, find good light, keep the phone steady, and check that the camera has focused on the right distance. A close subject may be too near for the telephoto camera to focus, while camera shake becomes more visible at high magnification. The exact focus range, stabilization and camera switching behavior depend on the phone.
Why phone zoom photos look blurry
The subject may be too close
Telephoto cameras are designed for more distant subjects and can have a longer minimum focus distance than the main camera. If a close subject looks soft, try stepping back and reframing rather than increasing zoom. Samsung notes that a close object can fall out of focus when high zoom selects a telephoto camera; the minimum distance varies by model. Samsung’s blurry-photo troubleshooting guide gives examples for specific Galaxy models, not a universal distance.

Small movements are magnified
At telephoto magnification, a slight movement of the phone can make the image look blurred. Stabilization differs between phones and even between cameras on the same phone. Xiaomi says the telephoto camera on the Redmi Note 14 Pro+ 5G does not support optical image stabilization (OIS), and advises holding it steadily or using a tripod or gimbal. That limitation applies to that model, not all periscope phones. Xiaomi’s model-specific guidance also suggests continuous shooting for a stationary subject.

Dim light can make focusing and exposure more difficult. A smudged lens or an interfering camera cover can also reduce clarity; Samsung recommends checking the lens and removing a protector or cover if it causes a problem. Phones may switch cameras automatically as you zoom: Google documents automatic lens selection on Pixel phones, so a zoom number alone does not prove which camera is active. Google’s Pixel camera help describes its lens selection and focus controls.

A practical workflow for sharper periscope photos
- Choose a distant subject and good light. Use telephoto for a subject far enough away for that camera to focus. If a nearby subject is soft, move back and reframe. When possible, shoot in brighter light rather than relying on high zoom in dim conditions. Samsung discusses close-focus and lighting issues in its Galaxy photo troubleshooting guide.
- Check which camera is active. Zoom steps and automatic lens switching vary by device. If your camera app labels lenses or provides a lens selector, use that indicator instead of assuming a particular zoom level engages the periscope camera. Pixel phones, for example, can automatically choose a lens as the user zooms, according to Google’s Pixel Camera Help.
- Brace the phone. Hold it with both hands and, if practical, brace your arms against your body or a stable surface. For a static scene, a compatible phone mount on a tripod can reduce movement; a tripod cannot stop the subject from moving. Xiaomi specifically recommends a tripod or gimbal for the Redmi Note 14 Pro+ 5G telephoto camera, which lacks OIS, and suggests taking multiple frames with continuous shooting where available. See Xiaomi’s advice for that model.
- Set focus and exposure on the subject. Where the camera app supports it, tap the subject before taking the picture. Google documents tap-to-focus and exposure adjustment on Pixel devices; controls may differ on other phones. Google Pixel Camera Help explains those controls.
- Clean the lens and remove anything obstructing it. Wipe the telephoto lens gently with a clean, soft cloth. If a lens protector or case cover overlaps the camera, remove it temporarily and check whether clarity improves. Samsung includes these checks in its blurry-photo troubleshooting guidance.
- For a stationary subject, take a few frames. When your phone offers continuous shooting, several exposures give you a chance to select the sharpest one. This is Xiaomi’s recommendation for its Redmi Note 14 Pro+ 5G telephoto camera; it does not solve focus problems or motion in the scene. Xiaomi’s page provides the model-specific context.
What a periscope camera does—and what zoom numbers do not tell you
A periscope camera folds the optical path inside the phone, allowing a longer focal length to fit in a slim body. The design makes longer-range optical zoom possible, but it does not mean every displayed zoom level is optical or that image quality remains equal at every setting. Manufacturers describe periscope designs in product-specific terms: see OPPO’s explanation of AI Telescope Zoom and Motorola’s lens overview.
As you zoom beyond a camera’s optical range, the phone may use cropping or computational processing; the exact behavior depends on the model and setting. Likewise, automatic switching may send the image to a different rear camera in some circumstances. Use the app’s lens indicator when available, and treat the published zoom figure as a feature of that phone—not a guarantee of identical detail at every magnification.

- Get Closer To Everyday Distant Moments: Bring distant sports events, birds, boats and travel landmarks closer when your phone camera cannot reach. The 28X optical telephoto lens is designed for stable outdoor subjects approximately 49–262 ft / 15–80 m away, making everyday long-distance observation and smartphone photography more accessible.
- Wider, More Natural Telephoto View: Compared with many higher-power phone telescopes, the 28X design provides a wider field of view and makes distant subjects easier to find and frame. It is a practical choice for beginners who prefer a more natural telephoto view instead of an extremely narrow image.
- Smaller Edge Darkening—Phone Models May Vary: Designed to reduce edge darkening on many smartphones. Because camera position and sensor size vary, some newer multi-camera phones may still show slight dark edges at 1X. Center the lens over the main camera and apply a small amount of phone zoom when needed.
- Manual Focus For Clearer Distant Detail: Rotate the focus ring slowly until your subject appears sharp. At 28X magnification, even small hand movements become visible, so brace your arms or use a tripod for clearer photos and video. For moving subjects, set your position and focus before the moment begins.Tripod is recommended and sold separately.
- Universal Clip For Popular Smartphones: Works with many iPhone, Samsung Galaxy, Google Pixel and Android main cameras. Remove thick phone cases, identify the main 1X camera, center the lens carefully and disable automatic macro or lens switching when possible. The aluminum body also works as a compact handheld monocular for travel and outdoor observation.
How to compare phones for distant photos
Maximum zoom alone is a poor basis for choosing a phone. For a useful comparison, look for these details in the specifications and camera app:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Optical telephoto step: whether the phone has a dedicated telephoto or periscope camera and the focal-length or optical-zoom step it provides.
- Stabilization: whether the telephoto camera itself has OIS or another stated stabilization system; do not assume stabilization on the main camera also applies to telephoto.
- Minimum focus distance: how close the telephoto camera can focus, if the manufacturer publishes it.
- Low-light behavior: whether the phone changes cameras in dim conditions and how the manufacturer describes telephoto use in low light.
- Camera controls: whether the app identifies the active lens and lets you adjust focus or exposure.
Specifications and manufacturer examples do not establish which phone produces the best distant photographs in a controlled comparison. The practical result depends on the particular camera hardware, software processing, lighting, subject distance and how steady the phone is. OPPO’s Find X8 materials describe OIS for its named products, while Xiaomi’s Redmi Note 14 Pro+ 5G guidance describes a telephoto camera without OIS—examples of why stabilization claims must be checked model by model. OPPO’s camera tips also emphasize light, steadiness and framing.
