Choose the capture method first
The right method depends on whether you want a carefully framed game image, a quick record of what is on screen, or a video clip.

Photo Mode and Steam screenshots are separate systems. A file saved by Photo Mode should be looked for in the game’s screenshots directory; a capture made with F12 should be managed through Steam. Do not assume that both methods write to the same folder.
Take a screenshot with The Witcher 3 Photo Mode
1. Open Photo Mode
- Launch The Witcher 3 on your PC.
- Press U to enter the game’s Photo Mode. CD PROJEKT RED identifies U as the PC Photo Mode key.
- Use the controls shown by Photo Mode to frame the scene and save the image. The exact on-screen controls are the authority for the game build you are running.
This route is the natural choice when composition matters. It keeps the image inside the game’s own Photo Mode workflow instead of capturing the entire desktop or relying on Steam’s overlay.

2. Open the Photo Mode folder directly
- Open Windows File Explorer.
- Click the address bar.
- Enter
%userprofile%DocumentsThe Witcher 3screenshots. - Press Enter.
The path above is the PC location listed by CD PROJEKT RED for Photo Mode screenshots. The %userprofile% portion resolves to the Windows account currently in use, so you do not need to replace it with a manually typed username.
3. Share a Photo Mode image
- In the
screenshotsfolder, identify the image you want to send. - Open the destination you plan to use, such as an email compose window, a chat attachment dialog, or a web upload form.
- Attach the image from that folder, or copy it to another folder first if you want to keep an organized set of originals.
This method gives you the actual game-generated file. It does not require Steam’s Screenshot Uploader, and opening Steam’s screenshot viewer will not substitute for browsing the Photo Mode directory.
Take and share a screenshot through Steam
1. Confirm that the Steam Overlay is available
Steam’s screenshot feature depends on the Steam Overlay being active for the game. If the overlay is disabled, the default F12 capture may not trigger.

- Open the Steam desktop client.
- Go to Steam > Settings > In-Game.
- Confirm that the Steam Overlay is enabled for games. Steam’s labels can change as the client is updated, so use the current In-Game settings wording shown in your installation.
2. Use the default F12 shortcut
- Return to The Witcher 3.
- Press F12. Steamworks documents F12 as the default screenshot hotkey, although the key can be changed.
- Continue playing or take additional captures as needed.
F12 is a Steam capture, not a Photo Mode capture. It is useful for quickly recording the current game view when you do not need the framing controls of Photo Mode.

3. Change the screenshot shortcut if necessary
- Open Steam > Settings > In-Game.
- Find the screenshot shortcut field.
- Assign a key that does not conflict with a control you use in The Witcher 3.
- Save the setting, return to the game, and test the new key once.
Steam’s shortcut is configurable, so F12 is a default rather than a permanent requirement. Record the new key somewhere convenient if you switch between games with different capture assignments.
4. Find and upload the Steam capture
Steamworks says the Screenshot Uploader opens when you quit the game and displays screenshots from that session. You can also open Steam’s screenshot viewer from the desktop client with View > Recordings & Screenshots.
- Quit The Witcher 3 after taking the screenshot if you want the session uploader to appear.
- In the Screenshot Uploader, select the image you want to publish or share and follow the uploader’s current prompts.
- If the uploader does not appear, open Steam’s desktop client and choose View > Recordings & Screenshots.
The Steam documentation used here does not specify a local disk path for Steam screenshots. Therefore, use Steam’s uploader or viewer rather than treating %userprofile%DocumentsThe Witcher 3screenshots as the Steam location.

Use Photo Mode when the image itself is the project: a landscape, character pose, or deliberately arranged scene. Use Steam when speed matters and you simply need a record of what was visible during play.

Troubleshoot screenshots that are not saving
U does not open Photo Mode
- Make sure the game window has focus before pressing U.
- Check the game’s current control or Photo Mode instructions if another action has been assigned to that key.
- After attempting a capture, check
%userprofile%DocumentsThe Witcher 3screenshotsrather than looking only in Steam’s viewer.
The documented PC entry point is U; the cited support information does not establish every game-, mod-, or system-specific reason why Photo Mode might fail to open.
F12 does nothing
- Confirm that the Steam Overlay is enabled for The Witcher 3.
- Open Steam > Settings > In-Game and verify which key is assigned to screenshots.
- Use the configured key rather than assuming it is still F12.
- Close and reopen the game after changing the setting, then test again.
Overlay availability and the configured shortcut are the documented dependencies. The available Steam documentation does not identify every hardware, operating-system, overlay-conflict, or game-specific cause of a failed capture.
The screenshot is not in the game’s Documents folder
First determine which workflow made the image. A Photo Mode image belongs in the game’s screenshots folder. An F12 image belongs to Steam’s screenshot system and should be checked through the Screenshot Uploader or View > Recordings & Screenshots. Looking in the wrong system’s location is the most important distinction to make before troubleshooting further.
The Steam viewer labels look different
Steam’s client interface can change. The documented route is View > Recordings & Screenshots in the desktop client, but a future client may present equivalent wording or a rearranged menu. If the label differs, look in Steam’s current View menu for the recordings and screenshots area rather than moving Photo Mode files into a guessed Steam directory.

When you actually want video
A still screenshot and a recording are different Steam features. If the goal is a combat sequence, glitch, quest moment, or other moving event, use Steam Game Recording instead of taking a series of stills.
- Open Steam > Settings > Game Recording.
- Choose the recording behavior Steam offers there, such as background recording or on-demand recording.
- Play The Witcher 3 and create a recording or clip using the controls shown by Steam.
- Open the resulting recording in Steam’s recordings viewer.
- Export the selected clip as a video file for sharing.
Game Recording is optional. It does not change where Photo Mode stills are saved, and it is unnecessary when you only need one image.
Sharing workflow by destination
Sending a Photo Mode file outside Steam
Use File Explorer to open the official Photo Mode path, then attach the chosen image directly to your destination. If a service rejects the file, make a copy and use that copy for any conversion or resizing; keep the original in the game’s folder so the capture remains available locally.
Sharing a Steam screenshot
Open the Screenshot Uploader after quitting the game, or use View > Recordings & Screenshots in Steam’s desktop client. Select the capture from the session and use the sharing or publishing controls Steam presents. This avoids confusing Steam’s managed library with the game’s Documents directory.
Sharing a video clip
For Game Recording footage, export the clip from Steam’s recordings viewer first. Share the exported video file through the service you choose, rather than trying to attach it as though it were a still screenshot.
What about NVIDIA Ansel?
NVIDIA published a GeForce News article on August 16, 2016 describing an older The Witcher 3 workflow that opened NVIDIA Ansel with Alt+F2, allowed the user to frame a shot, and placed captures in the Windows Videos folder. That article referred to a version 1.24-era setup and older driver guidance.
Treat Ansel as historical context, not as the primary current solution. Current NVIDIA Ansel support and compatibility for The Witcher 3 are not established by the available documentation. For a current PC installation, start with the game’s U Photo Mode or Steam’s overlay-dependent screenshot feature.
