After launching or attaching to a supported browser, choose Entire web page or Specific element, then save the result to a file or the clipboard.
Before you build the flow
You need Power Automate Desktop, a supported browser, and a browser instance variable. Microsoft’s browser automation guidance covers Microsoft Edge, Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, and Mozilla Firefox. Install and configure the appropriate browser extension before creating the flow. WebDriver is also described as an interaction method for browser automation.
- Decide whether you need webpage content, a desktop window, or the whole screen.
- Have a writable destination ready if you will save an image file.
- If you will capture one element, identify the webpage element while creating the browser automation selector.
Browser automation cannot open with a different system user or attach to a browser opened by a different system user. It normally does not move the mouse and can run while the browser is minimized or another tab has focus. Actions that require physical interaction may still require the browser window to be focused.
Choose the correct screenshot action
| What you want to capture | Action | Target choices | Output |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rendered webpage content | Take screenshot of web page | Entire web page or Specific element | File or Clipboard |
| A desktop control inside a window | Take screenshot of UI element | Selected desktop UI element | File or Clipboard |
| The monitor, one display, or the foreground window | Workstation Take screenshot | All screens, Primary screen, Selected screen, or Foreground window | File or Clipboard |
Use the browser action for a website. Browser automation elements and desktop UI automation elements are different types: a webpage element selected for browser automation is not interchangeable with a desktop UI element selected through UI automation.

Step-by-step: capture an entire webpage
-
Launch or attach to the browser
Add the browser-launch action for your browser, or add the action that attaches to an existing browser. Store the result in a browser instance variable, such as
%Browser%. Navigate to the page you want to capture. If the page requires interaction before it is ready, add those browser actions before the screenshot step. -
Add the webpage screenshot action
In the Actions pane, search for Take screenshot of web page and add it after the page has loaded. In the action, select the browser instance variable created in the previous step.
-
Select the capture scope
Set Capture to Entire web page. This targets the webpage rendered by the browser automation instance, rather than the visible bounds of the browser window.
-
Choose where to write the image
For Save mode, select File. Enter a complete path, for example
C:UsersPublicPicturesproduct-page.png, and choose an image format. The action lists BMP, EMF, EXIF, GIF, JPG, PNG, TIFF, and WMF.Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down

Run and verify
Run the flow and check the destination folder. If you selected Clipboard instead, paste into an image editor or document immediately after the action so a later clipboard operation does not replace the capture.

Add Take screenshot of web page and select that browser instance.

Set Capture to Specific element.
-
Select the webpage element through the browser automation selector. The element must be a web UI element captured by browser automation, not a desktop UI element captured by UI automation.

Choose File or Clipboard. For a file, provide the full path and an image format, then run the flow.
This is useful for a product card, pricing table, chart, article body, or confirmation panel when a full-page image would contain unrelated material.
When you actually need a window or screen capture
If the requirement is “what the operator can see,” use the workstation Take screenshot action instead. It can capture all screens, the primary screen, a selected screen, or the foreground window, and it also supports file or clipboard output. This includes browser chrome, taskbars, other applications, and anything else visible in the selected desktop target.
For a control inside a desktop application window, use Take screenshot of UI element. That action belongs to UI automation and expects a desktop UI element. Do not use it as a substitute for selecting a webpage element in the browser screenshot action.

Save formats and destination choices
File output
File mode is best for unattended flows, audit records, attachments, and later processing. Use an absolute path, make sure the directory exists, and give each run a unique filename when you do not want a later run to overwrite an earlier image. Include the extension that matches the selected format.
Clipboard output
Clipboard mode is convenient when the next step pastes the image into a report or message. It is less suitable for unattended workflows because another application or action can replace clipboard contents before they are consumed.
Reliable flow design
- Use a stable browser variable: pass the exact instance returned by launch or attach; do not assume the action will discover a browser automatically.
- Separate navigation from capture: complete URL navigation and any required webpage interactions before the screenshot action.
- Keep web elements in the web domain: select them with browser automation and use them with browser actions.
- Use deterministic paths: create the output directory and generate filenames from a timestamp or record identifier when runs are repeated.
- Test both minimized and focused operation: browser screenshots generally do not require the window to be foreground, but preceding actions that physically move the mouse or click may.
- Plan for prompts: a User Account Control prompt can block UI automation during an unattended run.
Troubleshooting
“Selected element not found”
The saved webpage selector no longer matches the page, the wrong browser instance was supplied, or the page has not reached the state in which the element exists. Recheck the selected browser instance, recapture the webpage element, and place the screenshot after navigation and any required page interaction.
The screenshot itself fails
Confirm that the browser was launched or attached successfully and that the target page is available in that instance. Try an Entire web page capture first. If that works, the problem is likely the specific-element selection rather than the browser connection.

File save fails
Verify the full path, confirm that the directory exists, check write permissions, and ensure that the selected extension and format agree. Try a simple writable directory to isolate a path or permission problem.
Clipboard save fails
Check that the desktop session has an available clipboard and that another process is not locking or immediately replacing it. For unattended jobs, switch to File mode and consume the saved image from disk.

A later action sees the wrong screen
For diagnostics, add a workstation Take screenshot immediately before and immediately after the failing step, using separate filenames such as before.png and after.png. This shows whether navigation, a prompt, or a focus change occurred before the browser screenshot action.
A User Account Control prompt blocks the run
Inspect the desktop while reproducing the failure. A UAC prompt can prevent UI automation from reaching the intended window; resolve the prompt or adjust the run environment according to your organization’s security policy before retrying.
Or skip the browser setup
If you only need a clean website image and do not want to maintain a desktop browser flow, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns PNG, JPEG, WebP, or a PDF. Before capture it accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled.
Only clean shots are billed. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and each response reports the result in X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

FAQ
Does the webpage action capture browser tabs and toolbars?
No. Take screenshot of web page captures webpage content. Use the workstation screenshot action for the visible browser window, including its desktop surroundings.
Can I capture a page element without saving a file?
Yes. Set Capture to Specific element and Save mode to Clipboard.
Why does my browser screenshot differ from what I see on screen?
The browser action targets rendered webpage content, while a workstation capture targets the display or foreground window. They have different targets and can therefore produce different images.
