The fastest method depends on your device: press Windows+Shift+S on Windows, Shift-Command-3 on a Mac, side+volume up on a Face ID iPhone, or Power+Volume Down on Android. The sections below show how to capture the whole screen, a selected area, a window, or a scrolling page, then edit, save, find, and share the image.

Windows 10 and Windows 11
Capture a region, window, or full screen
- Display exactly what you want to capture.
- Press Windows logo key+Shift+S. The screen dims and the Snipping Tool overlay appears.
- Choose rectangular snip, freeform snip, window snip, or full-screen snip.
- Drag around the region, select a window, or let full-screen mode capture the display. A notification opens the result in Snipping Tool.
In Snipping Tool you can annotate, crop, save, copy, and share the still image. Use Print Screen (PrtSc) when you want an immediate full-screen image copied to the clipboard; paste it into Paint, an email, or another image editor with Ctrl+V, then save it.
Find and save a Windows capture
A Snipping Tool capture is not useful until you save or copy it. Open the notification or Snipping Tool window, choose the save control, select a folder and image format, and confirm the filename. Print Screen alone does not create a file; it places pixels on the clipboard, so paste and save them before copying something else.
Important Windows distinctions
Snipping Tool also includes video-snipping features, but a video recording is different from a still screenshot. Newer Copilot+ PC features described by Microsoft are not available on every Windows computer, so use the standard shortcuts above for a broadly compatible method.

Mac (macOS)
Use the keyboard shortcuts
- Shift-Command-3: capture the entire screen.
- Shift-Command-4: turn the pointer into a crosshair; drag over the area to capture. Press Escape before releasing to cancel.
- Shift-Command-4, then Space: switch to window capture and click a window.
By default, macOS saves screenshots to the desktop. Hold Control with a shortcut to copy the capture to the clipboard instead of saving it directly; paste it into the destination app.
Use the Screenshot app
On macOS Mojave 10.14 or later, press Shift-Command-5. The Screenshot toolbar offers full-screen, window, and selected-area still captures, plus screen-recording controls. Open Options to set a timer, choose a save location, or change other capture settings. Some applications can block screenshots of their windows.
Supported Mac models running macOS Tahoe 26 or later can choose SDR/PNG or HDR/HEIF capture format. If another person must open the file, PNG is generally the safer compatibility choice.
Edit, locate, and share
Open the saved image from the desktop or the location selected in Options. Use Preview or another image editor to crop, draw, add text, or export a different format, then attach the file to a message or upload it. A Control-copy capture remains available only through the clipboard until you save it.

iPhone
Models without a Home button
- Open the screen you want to preserve.
- Press and release the side button and volume-up button together. Do not hold them long enough to open the power-off controls.
- Tap the thumbnail in the lower-left corner if you want to crop, draw, add text, or share immediately. Otherwise let it disappear.
Models with a Home button
Press and release the side button and Home button together. Tap the thumbnail for markup and sharing. If the buttons are difficult to press simultaneously, accessibility controls can provide an on-screen alternative, but the physical shortcut is the standard method.
Capture a complete webpage
After capturing supported content such as a Safari webpage, tap the thumbnail and choose Full Page. Review the preview, crop if needed, then save or share the resulting document or image according to the options shown. Full Page is not offered for every app or screen; it depends on the content supporting an extended capture.

Find screenshots later
Open the Photos app and look in your recent items or the Screenshots collection. From the screenshot viewer you can edit, duplicate, send, print, or add it to an album.
Android phones and tablets
Standard button shortcut
- Show the content to capture.
- Press Power+Volume Down together, then release. A preview or toolbar normally appears.
- Tap the preview to edit or share, or wait for it to be stored.
When the buttons do not work
Hold the Power button for a few seconds. If the menu includes Screenshot, tap it. Button layouts and menu names vary by manufacturer; if neither method is present, follow the phone maker’s support instructions for your model.

Android 12 and later support a Capture more control on most screens that permit scrolling. Take a normal screenshot, tap Capture more, extend the selection down the page, and save. The control is absent from screens that cannot expose additional scrollable content, and manufacturer software can change the appearance or availability.
Find, edit, and share
On current Android devices, open Photos > Collections > On this device > Screenshots. Google Photos lets you crop, annotate, adjust, and share. On older Android versions without Photos, open the Gallery app and its Screenshots album.
Clipboard versus saved image
A screenshot can be saved automatically or copied temporarily. Windows Print Screen and macOS Control-shortcuts copy pixels to the clipboard; paste them before another copy operation replaces them. Snipping Tool, macOS’s normal shortcuts, iPhone, and Android normally create a saved item, often with a preview for immediate editing. If a recipient cannot open your format, export to PNG or JPEG from the editor before sharing.
Common problems and fixes
Nothing happens after pressing the shortcut
- Press and release the keys together rather than holding them. On laptops, try the device’s Fn modifier for Print Screen if the key is shared with another function.
- On a Mac, verify that the Screenshot shortcuts have not been changed in System Settings.
- On an Android phone, use the Power menu’s Screenshot command or the manufacturer’s documented shortcut.
The image is blank or a window is missing
Some apps protect their windows from capture, and protected video or secure screens may intentionally appear blank. Capture the surrounding interface, use an export function provided by the app, or ask the content owner for an approved copy instead of trying to bypass protection.

The screenshot cannot be found
Check the clipboard first if you used Print Screen or a Control-copy shortcut. Otherwise check the Windows save location, the Mac desktop or Screenshot Options folder, Photos’ Screenshots collection on iPhone, or Photos/Gallery on Android. Use the device’s search or sort-by-date view if the notification disappeared.
The scrolling or Full Page option is missing
That control requires supported, scrollable content. Try the page in a browser, take several ordinary captures and stitch them in an editor, or use the app’s export command. Android’s Capture more is tied to Android 12 or later and is not universal.
