On the Galaxy S9 and S9+, taking a screenshot is usually as simple as pressing two buttons. Samsung also offers gesture-based options (like palm swipe) and accessibility alternatives (like Assistant Menu) if you prefer or need on-screen controls.

This guide walks you through the reliable methods, shows exactly where to find your screenshots afterward, and covers what to do when the main shortcut stops working. If you’re on Android 8/9 era software (typical for the S9 lineup), the menu names below should match closely.

Screenshot basics on Galaxy S9 / S9+

Most screenshots on Galaxy devices are created instantly and saved to your Photos/Gallery. After you capture, you’ll typically see a preview and a small toolbar that lets you edit, crop, or share right away.

If you want more than one screen—like a full webpage, long article, or chat—Samsung can extend the capture with a scrolling screenshot option (when supported by the app).

Samsung Galaxy S9, 64GB, Midnight Black - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
  • Successfully passed a full diagnostic test which ensures like-new functionality and removal of any prior-user personal information.
  • Inspected and guaranteed to have minimal cosmetic damage, which is not noticeable when the device is held at arm's length.
  • The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a charger and charging cable that may be generic.
  • Fully Unlocked: Fully unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US-Cellular, Cricket, Metro, etc.), both domestically and internationally.

Method 1: Use the physical buttons (fastest)

This is the most dependable method because it doesn’t depend on gestures being enabled.

  1. Go to the screen you want to capture.
  2. Press and hold Power + Volume Down at the same time.
  3. Keep holding briefly until you see the screenshot animation or hear the capture sound (if enabled).

On many S9 devices, the button combo can feel sensitive. If nothing happens, try pressing both buttons firmly and for a slightly longer moment (about 1 second).

Method 2: Palm swipe to capture

If you’d rather not use hardware buttons, enable the gesture that uses your hand to swipe across the screen.

Turn on Palm swipe

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Advanced features.
  3. Tap Motions and gestures.
  4. Find Palm swipe to capture and toggle it On.

Take the screenshot with a palm swipe

  1. Open the screen you want.
  2. Place the side of your hand vertically on the screen.
  3. Swipe your hand across the screen from one edge to the other (a smooth, deliberate motion).

If it fails, make sure your hand is contacting the screen and your swipe is across, not diagonally. Also try swiping slower—fast swipes sometimes don’t trigger.

Method 3: Use Assistant Menu (on-screen controls)

Assistant Menu is a helpful option if your buttons are hard to press or you prefer tapping an on-screen icon.

Enable Assistant Menu

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Accessibility.
  3. Tap Assistant menu.
  4. Toggle Assistant menu to On.

Use it to take a screenshot

  1. Make sure the Assistant Menu floating icon is visible on your screen.
  2. Tap the Assistant Menu icon.
  3. Look for and select Screenshot (often in the first or second menu page).

If you don’t see Screenshot inside the Assistant Menu, check the menu layout and confirm Assistant Menu features are enabled for your setup.

Method 4: Capture scrolling content (full-page screenshots)

Samsung’s scrolling screenshot feature can extend a capture beyond the visible screen—useful for long webpages and multi-part forms.

  1. Take a normal screenshot using Method 1, 2, or 3.
  2. When the screenshot preview toolbar appears, tap Capture more (or a similar button like Scroll depending on software version).
  3. The phone will capture additional content automatically. Tap again as needed to extend further.
  4. When you reach the end, tap Done to finish.

App support varies. Many browsers and messaging apps support scrolling capture, but some apps don’t allow it. If you don’t see the Capture more option, that app likely doesn’t support scrolling screenshots.

Where your screenshots are saved

After you capture, you can find your screenshots in the Gallery/Photos app or via the Files app, depending on your settings.

Typical locations on Galaxy S9 / S9+

  • Gallery / Photos: Look for an Albums folder like Screenshots.
  • File storage: Open My Files and check Internal storage > Pictures > Screenshots.

If you use cloud backup (like Samsung cloud), your screenshots may also sync depending on your sync settings.

How to edit, share, and delete screenshots

Samsung usually gives you quick tools right after taking the screenshot, then keeps the edited version in the Gallery.

Quick actions from the preview

  • Edit: Crop, draw, or add text (tool names can vary slightly by version).
  • Share: Send to Messages, Email, social apps, or save to cloud.
  • Delete: Remove the screenshot immediately if you didn’t mean to capture it.

Edit later

  1. Open Gallery or Photos.
  2. Open the Screenshots album/folder.
  3. Tap the screenshot, then tap Edit to crop or annotate.

If the preview toolbar disappears, you can still edit by reopening the screenshot from the Gallery.

Troubleshooting when screenshots won’t work

If your button combo or palm swipe suddenly stops working, it’s almost always a settings issue, gesture sensitivity, or a temporary system glitch.

1) Buttons don’t capture

  • Try again by pressing Power + Volume Down simultaneously. Don’t press one first and the other later.
  • Hold for about 1 second. Quick taps can be too short.
  • Remove any case obstacles if they make it hard to press Volume Down fully.
  • Restart the phone once, then test again.

2) Palm swipe does nothing

  • Confirm Palm swipe to capture is toggled On under Settings > Advanced features > Motions and gestures.
  • Try in a different app (some apps block gesture capture or use their own gesture handling).
  • Check for screen protectors or thick cases that reduce contact or alter swipe detection.

3) Screenshot works, but you can’t find it

  • Open Gallery and check the Screenshots album.
  • In My Files, verify Internal storage > Pictures > Screenshots.
  • If storage is nearly full, saves can fail. Free up space and retry.

4) Scrolling screenshot option is missing

  • Some apps only support normal screenshots. If you don’t see Capture more, the app likely doesn’t allow scrolling capture.
  • Retry with a different page (for example, a webpage in Samsung Internet) to confirm the feature works on your device.

5) Assistant Menu doesn’t show Screenshot

  • Open Settings > Accessibility > Assistant menu and confirm it’s enabled.
  • Reopen the Assistant Menu icon and look on each page of its controls—some layouts require switching menus.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Pressing the wrong volume button. It’s Volume Down, not Volume Up.
  • Timing issues with the button combo. Both buttons must be pressed together.
  • Half-swipes for palm swipe. Swipe across the screen with a full gesture and consistent contact.
  • Expecting scrolling capture everywhere. Scrolling screenshots depend on app support.
  • Not checking the right folder. Always verify Gallery/Screenshots or My Files/Pictures/Screenshots.

Comparisons: button vs palm swipe vs Assistant Menu

All three methods work, but each has a different trade-off in speed, reliability, and comfort.

Rank #3
Method Best for Common failure reason
Power + Volume Down Fast captures everywhere Not pressing both buttons together
Palm swipe to capture Hands-free or one-handed use Gesture disabled or swipe too short/fast
Assistant Menu screenshot Accessibility and button issues Screenshot option not visible on current menu page

If you’re trying to capture something important and you need maximum reliability, start with the physical button combo.

FAQ

Can I take a screenshot while using the screen recorder?

Yes, but your device may limit simultaneous capture features depending on what you have running. If you run into conflicts, stop the recorder first and try the screenshot again.

Why does my screenshot look blurry or cropped?

Blurriness is usually caused by motion right at capture time or low lighting (for screenshots of moving content). Cropping happens if you immediately edit and save with crop enabled—open the screenshot again in Gallery to confirm.

Do screenshots delete automatically after sharing?

No. Sharing won’t remove the original screenshot by default. If you deleted it or used a preview action that removed it, then it will be gone from Gallery and the Screenshots folder.

Does the Galaxy S9 support long scrolling screenshots in all apps?

No. You need the app to support the scrolling capture flow. If Capture more doesn’t appear after your first screenshot, that app typically can’t extend the capture.

Bottom Line

On the Galaxy S9 and S9+, the most reliable screenshot method is Power + Volume Down. If you prefer gestures, enable Palm swipe to capture, and if you need accessibility-friendly controls, turn on Assistant Menu.

Once captured, check Gallery or My Files for the Screenshots folder, and use Capture more when you see it to create full-page screenshots.
