How to Take a Screenshot on RHEL 8 (GNOME 3)

On a standard RHEL 8 GNOME desktop, press Print to open the screenshot interface. Choose Area, Screen, or Window, then press the round capture button. GNOME saves the image in ~/Pictures/Screenshots and copies it to the clipboard. For immediate captures, Alt+Print captures a window and Shift+Print captures the entire screen.

Before you start: which RHEL 8 desktop are you using?

Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8 ships with GNOME 3 as its default desktop. A normal installation uses GNOME Standard with GNOME Shell on Wayland, although GNOME Classic and an X11 session are also available. The login session, installed updates, keyboard layout and locally assigned shortcuts can change the labels or behavior you see.

These instructions describe GNOME’s built-in screenshot workflow. You do not need to install a screenshot utility or use the terminal.

Capture a selected area, window or full screen

  1. Open the screenshot tool. Press Print. You can also open the system menu and choose its screenshot button.
  2. Choose the target. Select Area for part of the display, Screen for the complete display, or Window to pick an open window.
  3. Define an area when needed. For an area capture, drag the handles or crosshair around the content. For a window capture, select the window from the on-screen choices.
  4. Decide whether to include the pointer. Use the pointer option in the interface to turn the mouse pointer on or off.
  5. Capture. Click the round capture button. GNOME writes the image to your screenshots folder and places a copy on the clipboard.

The resulting filename starts with Screenshot and includes the capture date and time. If you only need to paste the image into an email, document or chat, use Ctrl+V in the destination instead of opening the saved file.

Use RHEL 8 screenshot keyboard shortcuts

Shortcut Result Best use
Print Opens the interactive screenshot interface Choosing an area, window or screen
Alt + Print Captures a window directly Getting one application without surrounding desktop content
Shift + Print Captures the entire screen directly Recording everything visible on a display

Inside the interactive interface, GNOME documents these keys:

  • S selects area capture.
  • C selects screen capture.
  • W selects window capture.
  • P toggles pointer visibility.
  • V switches between screenshot and screencast modes.
  • Enter, Space or Ctrl+C confirms a capture.

Treat these as GNOME guidance rather than a guarantee for every RHEL 8 installation. A custom shortcut, a different desktop session or a keyboard that labels the key differently can alter the result.

Find, open and share the saved screenshot

Open the default folder

Open Files, choose your home directory, and open Pictures, then Screenshots. The equivalent path is /home/your-user-name/Pictures/Screenshots, commonly written as ~/Pictures/Screenshots.

Verify the file from a terminal

To list the newest captures, open Terminal and run:

  • Linux Mint Cinnamon 64-Bit - 6-Row Keyboard w/ Full Numberpad
ls -lt ~/Pictures/Screenshots

To open the folder in the graphical file manager:

gio open ~/Pictures/Screenshots

If the folder does not yet exist, take one screenshot first; GNOME normally creates it as part of the capture workflow. You can also search your home directory for files whose names begin with Screenshot using Files.

Paste without locating the file

Because GNOME copies the image to the clipboard, switch to the destination application immediately after capture and press Ctrl+V. Clipboard contents are temporary: copy the file to a permanent location if you need it after logging out or after copying other content.

Choose the right capture mode

Area capture

Use Area when documentation, a bug report or a presentation needs only one control, dialog or region. Drag tightly around the relevant content to avoid exposing unrelated data. The interactive tool is preferable here because it lets you adjust the selection before committing.

Window capture

Use Window for a single application. The direct Alt+Print shortcut is fastest, while the interactive mode is useful when several windows overlap and you need to confirm the target.

Screen capture

Use Screen for a complete display, including panels and other visible windows. The direct Shift+Print shortcut saves time when no selection is required. On a multi-monitor setup, check the preview and saved image to confirm which display GNOME included.

Troubleshoot screenshots that do not work

Print does nothing

  • Press the key labeled Print Screen, PrtSc or PrtScn; compact keyboards may require an Fn combination.
  • Open the system menu and use its screenshot button to determine whether the problem is the key binding or the screenshot service.
  • Check whether you are in GNOME Standard, GNOME Classic or another desktop, because shortcut defaults differ.
  • Review Settings → Keyboard → View and Customize Shortcuts and search for screenshot actions. A custom assignment may have replaced the default.

The shortcut captures the wrong thing

Use Print and explicitly choose Area, Screen or Window. This avoids ambiguity caused by focus, overlapping windows or a modified shortcut. On multiple displays, move the pointer to the intended display before selecting a target.

No file appears in Pictures/Screenshots

Confirm that the capture completed rather than merely opening the interface. Then run ls -lt ~/Pictures/Screenshots. If your desktop uses a customized save location, search Files for Screenshot. Verify that your home directory is writable and that the filesystem has free space.

The image is in the clipboard but not saved

Paste it into an image editor or document and save a copy manually. Then check your home-directory permissions and available disk space before trying another capture.

The pointer is missing

Press P in the screenshot interface, or enable the pointer option before clicking capture. Pointer inclusion is controlled per capture in the interactive tool.

The interface looks different

RHEL 8 can run GNOME on Wayland or X11, and updates or GNOME Classic can change the presentation. The target choices remain the same conceptually, but labels, icons and shortcut behavior may vary. Use the visible system-menu screenshot control when the keyboard instructions do not match your session.

Command-line and automated workflows

For a one-off local capture, the graphical GNOME tool is the supported path described above. Automation is a different problem: it usually means capturing a web page on a remote machine, on a schedule, or from a build pipeline. A desktop screenshot shortcut captures what is visible in your RHEL session; it does not reliably render a URL, wait for JavaScript, accept cookie dialogs or produce a PDF.

Or skip the browser setup

For website screenshots, ScreenshotNeo is a hosted screenshot API and MCP server for developers. One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. It accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.

Install nothing on RHEL 8 for the API call. Create an API key, then use the documented endpoint at ScreenshotNeo’s documentation.

Practical reliability and privacy checks

  • Before capturing, close or minimize unrelated windows when using Screen mode.
  • Inspect the preview for passwords, tokens, customer data and notifications.
  • Use Area or Window mode for support tickets that do not need the entire desktop.
  • Keep the original file and a copy in the format required by your destination.
  • For automated web captures, record the HTTP status and ScreenshotNeo verdict headers so failed loads are distinguishable from successful images.
