For repeatable captures or a particular page element, use Playwright to navigate to the URL and save an image. Both approaches capture how the page appears; neither gives you permission to republish its content.
Choose the capture method that fits the job
The main choice is whether you need a quick picture or a repeatable capture you can control with code. A browser feature takes less setup; browser automation is more useful when the same job must run again, when you need to capture an element, or when you want a script to save files automatically.

“External website” here means a page at a URL you want to capture, rather than a screenshot of your own application’s source code. The site may still require a login, behave differently for automated browsers, or load content dynamically; no method guarantees that every page will render as you expect.
Take a screenshot in Firefox without coding
- Open the page in Firefox and wait until the part you want is visible.
- Open the screenshot tool. Right-click an empty area of the page and choose Take Screenshot. On macOS, Control-click the empty area. You can also try Ctrl+Shift+S on Windows or Linux, or Command+Shift+S on macOS.
- Choose the scope. Select the visible-area capture for what is currently on screen, or the full-page capture for the scrollable page.
- Save or copy the result. Use the controls presented by Firefox to download the image or copy it.
Mozilla’s support instructions describe both visible and full-page captures, and list the context-menu flow and shortcuts above. Visible area or full page?
A visible-area screenshot is a picture of the page as currently displayed in the browser viewport. Choose it when you only need the section on screen. A full-page capture is intended to include the page beyond the current viewport, which is useful for a long article or landing page. Check the saved image before sharing it: pages with dynamic or lazy-loaded content can change while they render, and the sources do not establish how any particular site will handle those cases.
Automate a capture with Playwright
Playwright is the better fit when you need to repeat a capture, save it to a predictable path, or capture a defined page region. Its documentation shows navigating to a URL and saving a screenshot; fullPage: true extends the capture to the full scrollable page. The API also documents image-format and clipping options, as well as element screenshots. See Microsoft’s screenshot guide and Page API reference.
Set up a small JavaScript project
The following example uses Playwright’s Chromium browser. It accepts the target URL as a command-line argument and writes a full-page PNG named screenshot.png.

- Create a project directory, open a terminal there, and install Playwright and its browser:

node screenshot.js https://example.comThe default code waits for the page’s load event, then captures the full page. If you want only the current viewport, remove fullPage: true or set it to false. Choose a different output path in the path option if you want to keep multiple captures rather than overwrite the same file.

Change the capture scope or format
Use the options supported by Playwright’s screenshot API to tailor the result:
- Full page:
fullPage: truecaptures the scrollable page; omit it for a viewport capture. - Image type: the screenshot API accepts image-format options. The file extension and the selected format should match the output you intend to use.
- Clipping: use the documented clipping option when you need a rectangular region rather than the full viewport.
- Element capture: locate the element you need and use Playwright’s element screenshot API rather than saving the whole page.
For example, this changes the preceding script’s final capture to the visible viewport:

- The Firefox shortcut does nothing. Shortcuts depend on platform and version. Open the page context menu and choose Take Screenshot instead.
- The result stops at the visible screen. Choose Firefox’s full-page option, or in Playwright set
fullPage: true. A viewport capture is not the same as a full-page capture. - The Playwright script reports a timeout. The page may not finish loading within the configured 60-second limit, or it may depend on slow or continuing requests. Confirm that the URL opens in a regular browser, then adjust the navigation timeout or wait strategy to suit that page. A timeout does not prove the site is unavailable.
- The page looks incomplete or different. Some content appears only after interaction, authentication, or additional loading. Identify the missing region and determine whether the page needs a permitted login, a selector or delay to wait for, or an interaction before capture. No source establishes that arbitrary websites will render identically in automation and a person’s browser.
- The element screenshot fails. Check that the selector matches an element on the page and that the element has loaded before calling its screenshot method.
- The saved file is overwritten. The sample uses a fixed output filename. Change
pathto a unique filename for each run if you need to retain earlier captures.
Keep in mind what a screenshot does—and does not—show
A screenshot records the rendered appearance at the time of capture. It is not a copy of the page’s underlying code, and it does not by itself establish that you may republish the site’s text, images, or branding. The cited documentation does not resolve rights for a particular website or use; check the relevant permissions before redistributing a capture.

For a one-off capture, Firefox avoids project setup. For a repeatable job or precise capture region, Playwright gives you scriptable control. Choose the method based on the scope and repeatability you need rather than assuming that one can bypass a site’s access requirements.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a screenshot include the browser toolbar and tabs?
The Firefox and Playwright page-capture methods described here capture page content rather than a picture of the entire desktop interface. If you need browser chrome or another application window in the image, use your operating system’s screen-capture feature instead.
Can I share or republish a screenshot of another website?
A capture does not grant permission to reuse the page’s material. The sources here do not establish rights for a particular site or purpose, so check applicable permissions before republishing.
