On an iPhone or iPad, Safari can capture an entire webpage with the Full Page control. Open the page, take a normal screenshot, tap its thumbnail, choose Full Page, inspect the long preview, then save it. The workflow is different on a Mac: Apple documents screen, window and selection screenshots, but not a scrolling Full Page webpage screenshot in Safari.
This guide covers the exact button combinations, save formats, PDF and Mac alternatives, troubleshooting, and an automated option when you need repeatable captures.
Quick answer: use Full Page on iPhone or iPad
- Open the webpage in Safari.
- Take a screenshot with your device’s hardware buttons.
- Tap the screenshot thumbnail while it is visible.
- Tap Full Page.
- Drag through the tall preview, crop or annotate if needed, and use the displayed save control.
Apple describes this as capturing content beyond the visible screen, including an entire webpage in Safari. The exact save buttons can vary with the device and software version.
Take an entire-page screenshot on iPhone
iPhone without a Home button
- Open the target page in Safari and wait for the part you need to appear.
- Quickly press and release the side button and volume-up button together.
- Tap the screenshot thumbnail that appears in the lower-left corner.
- At the editor, tap Full Page near the top. If you remain on the default Screen tab, you will only edit the visible viewport.
- Drag the preview to inspect the page. Use the crop tool to remove unwanted margins or the markup tools to draw and add notes.
- Choose the save option shown by your iPhone. With thumbnails enabled, Apple’s current iPhone instructions say screenshots are automatically saved to Photos; your screen may also show options for saving or sharing the file.
iPhone with a Home button
- Open the webpage in Safari.
- Quickly press and release the side button and Home button together.
- Open the thumbnail, choose Full Page, inspect or crop the result, and save it using the controls displayed on your iPhone.
What you should see
The editor shows a long vertical preview rather than only the pixels currently on screen. Dragging the preview lets you check the beginning, middle and end before saving. A crop is useful when Safari includes excess space or when you need only a section of a very long article.

Take an entire-page screenshot on iPad
iPad without a Home button
- Open the webpage in Safari.
- Quickly press and release the top button and either volume button together.
- Tap the thumbnail, then tap Full Page.
- Drag through the preview to inspect it. Crop or annotate if required.
- Tap Done and follow the displayed save choices.
iPad with a Home button
- Open Safari to the page you want to capture.
- Quickly press and release the top button and Home button together.
- Open the thumbnail, select Full Page, review the preview, and tap Done to save.
Apple also documents Apple Pencil corner swipes, Siri and AssistiveTouch as alternate ways to initiate an iPad screenshot. Regardless of how you start it, you still need to open the screenshot editor and select Full Page for a webpage-length capture.
Screenshot versus PDF: choose the deliverable first
| What you need | Best Safari workflow | Result |
|---|---|---|
| A long image of the webpage | iPhone or iPad screenshot, then Full Page | A tall screenshot that you can inspect, crop and annotate |
| A shareable document | On iPhone, open Safari’s Share menu, choose Markup, then choose Save File To | A PDF rather than an image screenshot |
| A copy that retains page links | On Mac, choose File > Save As, then Web Archive | A web archive containing page graphics, with links remaining functional while their destination pages are available |
| Only the HTML source | On Mac, choose File > Save As, then Page Source | HTML source without the full visual presentation |
A PDF is the better choice when someone needs to print, annotate or read the page as a document. It is not the same as a full-page image screenshot.
What changes on a Mac
The built-in screenshot shortcuts
| Shortcut | Captures |
|---|---|
| Shift-Command-3 | The whole screen |
| Shift-Command-4 | A selected area |
| Shift-Command-4, then Space | A window or menu |
These shortcuts capture what is visible on the Mac display. Apple’s Mac screenshot instructions do not document a Safari control that automatically scrolls through an entire webpage, so do not expect Shift-Command-3 to produce the same long result as iPhone or iPad Full Page.
Save the webpage instead
For a complete Safari page on Mac, choose File > Save As. Web Archive saves page graphics and keeps links functional while destination pages remain available. Page Source saves the HTML source only. Apple cautions that some webpages may prevent Safari from saving items displayed on them.

Share a Mac page as a PDF
Safari can also share a webpage as a PDF through Mail. Use this when the recipient needs a document rather than a pixel-for-pixel screenshot.
How to get a cleaner, more reliable capture
Check the page before pressing the buttons
- Confirm that Safari, not another app’s in-app browser, is displaying the page.
- Scroll through the page once if you need to verify that the content you care about has loaded.
- Dismiss menus or temporary overlays that you do not want in the result.
- For a very long page, inspect the entire preview before saving; the visible top of the preview is not proof that the bottom was captured correctly.
Crop after capture, not before
Safari’s screenshot editor lets you crop the long preview. Cropping afterward preserves the page context and is safer than trying to position the page perfectly before taking the screenshot.
Keep image and document workflows separate
If the recipient asks for a screenshot, use Full Page. If they ask for a file they can print or archive, use the PDF workflow. If they need to revisit links or inspect source, use Mac’s Web Archive or Page Source options instead.
Troubleshooting
“Full Page” is not visible
Make sure you opened the screenshot thumbnail immediately after capturing the webpage. The control is in the screenshot editor, not in Safari’s regular page menu. If the editor still shows no Full Page option, confirm that Safari is displaying a webpage and check the labels shown by your current iOS or iPadOS version; Apple notes that interface details can vary with software updates.

The thumbnail disappeared
Take another screenshot and tap the thumbnail as soon as it appears. The long-page choice is made from that editor.
The saved file is only the visible screen
In the editor, switch from Screen to Full Page before saving. Selecting crop or markup while still on the Screen tab does not turn a viewport screenshot into a webpage-length capture.
The iPad save button is different from the instructions
Apple’s current iPad workflow uses Done, but the following save choices depend on the software and display settings. Read the options presented after tapping Done rather than assuming the iPhone Photos behavior.
You expected a scrolling screenshot on Mac
macOS’s documented shortcuts capture the screen, a selected area or a window. Use File > Save As > Web Archive, save a PDF, or use an automated webpage-capture service when you need one tall image.

Safari will not save part of a Mac webpage
Some webpages can prevent Safari from saving items displayed on them. In that case, try the PDF sharing workflow or capture the visible content with the standard Mac screenshot shortcuts. Respect access controls and copyright restrictions when distributing the result.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. It can capture PNG, JPEG or WebP images and PDFs from one request. For a full-page capture, use its full-page option; it can load lazy images before capturing. The service also supports element-only captures, dark mode, device presets and custom viewports, retina scale, PDF paper sizes and page ranges, custom CSS and JavaScript, click-before-capture actions, selector hiding, waits for a selector, delay or network idle, blocking ads, trackers, requests or resource types, custom headers, cookies, user agents and Authorization, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, configurable-TTL caching, signed links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API and an OpenAPI specification. Its parameter names are compatible with those used by many other screenshot APIs, which can simplify a migration.
Before capture, ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and each response reports the page verdict and billing status in X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.
One-call example
See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for the full-page option and other request settings. The following basic request saves a WebP response:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Python
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
The MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools to Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients, so an AI agent can request a capture without you wiring a browser automation script.

A practical choice by device and output
- iPhone or iPad, one-off image: use the hardware shortcut, then Full Page.
- iPhone PDF: use Safari’s Share > Markup > Save File To path.
- Mac archive: use File > Save As > Web Archive.
- Mac source: use File > Save As > Page Source.
- Repeatable or developer workflow: use an API such as ScreenshotNeo, especially when you need cleanup, PDFs, webhooks, bulk URLs or MCP access.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I annotate the entire webpage before saving it?
Yes. After selecting Full Page, use Safari’s markup tools in the screenshot editor, then save the edited result.
Which Mac format preserves links?
Safari’s Web Archive format preserves page graphics and keeps links functional while their destination pages remain available; Page Source saves HTML only.
Is a Safari PDF the same as a full-page screenshot?
No. A PDF is a document workflow, while Full Page produces a long screenshot image.
