To capture a clean still from a YouTube video, open the video, click the player, move to the exact moment, pause with K, and use comma or period to step one frame at a time. Enter full screen with F, then use your computer or phone’s built-in screenshot shortcut. On a desktop, select only the video area when possible; on a phone, crop the captured screen afterward.
Capture the exact frame on a computer
YouTube’s keyboard controls work only after the player has focus in the new computer experience. Click inside the video before using any shortcut. The documented controls are listed in YouTube’s keyboard-shortcut guide.
- Open the video page. Wait until the player has loaded enough to play, then click inside the picture.
- Move to the right section. Drag the seek bar, or press J to move back 10 seconds and L to move forward 10 seconds. When the seek bar is active, the left and right arrow keys move five seconds.
- Pause. Press K. Clicking the pause button also works, but the keyboard method avoids moving the pointer over the image.
- Fine-tune by frame. While paused, press comma to step backward one frame or period to step forward one frame. Hold neither key; each press advances a single frame.
- Enlarge the picture if needed. Press F for full screen. For a clean presentation, move the pointer away and wait for temporary controls to disappear.
- Capture the display. Use the operating-system shortcut below and draw a rectangle around the video when you do not want browser chrome, comments, or recommendations.
Frame stepping is useful when a subtitle, title card, or fast movement appears for only part of a second. It changes the paused video image; it does not download the original video file.
Make full-screen mode as clean as possible
YouTube documents entering full screen with the player’s full-screen control or the F shortcut. Its computer instructions also say that scrolling back up while in full screen can hide everything except the video; see YouTube’s full-screen help. This is different from a universal “hide controls” key.

- After pausing, move the pointer to a margin outside the picture.
- Wait for the progress bar and buttons to fade. If you move the pointer, the controls may return temporarily.
- If an end-screen panel covers the final frame, use YouTube’s Hide button when it appears. The control applies to end screens for the current video, not to every player overlay; YouTube described it on December 17, 2025, in its end-screen announcement.
- For a frame that is not at the end, seek a little earlier, pause, and step forward again rather than relying on the end-screen control.
Use the built-in screenshot tool on Windows
On Windows 10 and Windows 11, press Windows logo key + Shift + S to open Snipping Tool, as documented by Microsoft Support.
- Put the video in the desired paused state.
- Press Windows + Shift + S.
- Choose rectangular snip for the video area, or choose a full-screen mode if you need the entire display.
- Drag over the picture and release. Select the notification that appears to annotate or save the result, or open Snipping Tool’s capture history.
A rectangular snip normally gives the cleanest result because it excludes the tab bar, address bar, and surrounding YouTube page. A full-screen snip is useful when you need to preserve the player context or when the video spans most of the monitor.
Use the built-in screenshot tool on a Mac
Apple lists the Mac shortcuts and capture options in its screenshot guide.
- Shift + Command + 4: drag around the video to capture just that region.
- Shift + Command + 3: capture the entire screen.
- Shift + Command + 5: open the screenshot controls, where you can choose a window, selected portion, full screen, and other options.
For a full-screen YouTube player, Shift + Command + 4 is usually preferable to a complete-display capture because it lets you exclude the browser frame. If you use the window or full-screen options, check the saved image for menus or notification banners before sharing it.

On most Android phones and tablets, press Power + Volume Down at the same time. Android’s instructions and model caveats are in Google’s Android screenshot help.
- Open the video in the YouTube app or a browser and pause at the chosen frame.
- Tap the player once if you need the controls, then wait for them to fade.
- Press Power + Volume Down together and release promptly.
- Use the thumbnail’s crop or edit control to remove the status bar, navigation area, or other page content.
Button combinations and menus vary by manufacturer. If that combination does not work, use the screenshot command in your phone’s power menu, quick settings, or the manufacturer’s support instructions rather than repeatedly pressing the buttons and changing the video position.

Take the screenshot on an iPhone
For an iPhone with Face ID, press Side + Volume Up together. iPhones with a Home button use the Home button with the Side or Top button, depending on the model. Apple’s model-specific table is at Take a screenshot on iPhone.
- Pause the video and compose the frame.
- Move a finger away from the screen so it is not visible in the capture and wait for player controls to disappear.
- Press the appropriate two-button combination.
- Tap the screenshot thumbnail, crop to the video, and tap Done to save it to Photos.
Because a phone screenshot records the displayed screen, it may include the time, connection indicator, captions, or browser/app controls. Cropping is the practical way to produce a video-only image.

Choose the method that fits the result you need

Check the result before you share it
Open the saved image at 100% size. Look for a progress bar, play icon, subtitles, a notification, browser tabs, or black borders that were not part of the intended composition. If something is wrong, return to the player instead of trying to repair a blurred frame in an editor.
- Controls are visible: move the pointer away, wait, and capture again.
- The frame is early or late: pause with K and use comma or period for one-frame adjustments.
- The video looks small: use full screen before capturing, then select the picture area.
- The image is soft: a screenshot cannot contain more detail than the video frame displayed at that size. Enlarge the player first and avoid zooming the saved image afterward.
- The crop cuts off the picture: repeat the region selection with a small margin around the player, then crop precisely in the image editor.
Troubleshooting common capture problems
The keyboard shortcuts do nothing
The player probably does not have focus. Click the video once, then press K. If the browser caret or another page control is active, the keystroke may be handled outside YouTube. The player-focus requirement is documented in YouTube’s shortcut instructions.
Comma and period change the page instead of the frame
First pause the video and click inside the player. Frame stepping is documented for a paused player; it is not a general browser shortcut. If captions, a live stream, or a page control has focus, click the picture again and retry.

The full-screen button is unavailable
The browser window, operating-system restrictions, or an embedded player may prevent full screen. You can still use the largest normal player size and capture a selected region. Do not assume that a particular key will hide controls on every paused video; waiting and moving the pointer away is more reliable.
An end screen covers the final image
When YouTube shows the end-screen Hide control, select it for that video. If it is not available, seek slightly before the ending and use frame stepping. The Hide control is specifically for end screens, not a general overlay switch.
The phone shortcut fails
Android hardware layouts differ, and iPhone combinations depend on whether the device has Face ID or a Home button. Check the Android guidance at Google Support or the model table in Apple’s iPhone guide. Use the on-screen screenshot command if the physical buttons are difficult to press simultaneously.
The capture includes a black screen
Some protected or unavailable playback states may not render a usable image to the operating system. Confirm that the video is visibly playing in the player, then pause and capture again. A screenshot records what is rendered on your display; it cannot recover a frame that YouTube has not displayed.

It preserves the pixels rendered by your display or capture service. A small player enlarged later cannot recreate detail that was never rendered.
Is a YouTube screenshot the same as downloading a video frame?
No. A screenshot records the visible player and any surrounding display content. It does not provide the source video file or an uncompressed frame.
