Use Symfony Panther to capture a website screenshot from Symfony: it drives a real Chrome or Firefox browser, loads the page, and saves an image with takeScreenshot(). You will need the browser and its matching WebDriver driver available where the code runs. This is the right approach when the screenshot must include browser-rendered content such as JavaScript; BrowserKit-based clients are faster for simulated requests but do not provide screenshot capture.
Capture a website screenshot with Panther
For a quick capture, install Panther as a development dependency, create a browser client, request the target URL, and save the screenshot:
composer require --dev symfony/panther
<?php
require __DIR__ . '/vendor/autoload.php';
use SymfonyComponentPantherClient;
$client = Client::createChromeClient();
$client->request('GET', 'https://example.com');
$client->takeScreenshot('screen.png');
Save that PHP code in a file such as screenshot.php in the project directory, then run php screenshot.php. The example assumes Composer’s autoloader is present and Chrome plus a compatible ChromeDriver can be found by Panther. The image is written to the path passed to takeScreenshot(); in this example, that is screen.png relative to the process’s current working directory.
The equivalent Firefox client is Client::createFirefoxClient(). Symfony’s documentation uses the same request-and-takeScreenshot() pattern for Firefox. Choose the browser that is installed with its corresponding driver in the environment running the script.

Install and make the browser driver available
Panther communicates with a real browser through the WebDriver protocol. Installing the Composer package alone does not guarantee that the browser and its driver are available. Set these up on the developer machine, CI runner, or container where the capture actually runs.
Install drivers with Browser Driver Installer
Symfony documents using dbrekelmans/browser-driver-installer to install the browser drivers. After installing it, run:
vendor/bin/bdi detect drivers
This lets the installer detect browser versions and drivers. Check the result in the same environment that will run Panther; a driver installed on a workstation is not automatically present on a separate CI runner.

Use a driver already provided by the environment
Symfony also documents downloading drivers and putting them on the system PATH or in the project’s drivers/ directory, as well as installing them through an operating-system package manager. The browser and matching driver must both be available. Symfony’s guide includes examples for Ubuntu, macOS, Windows, and a Docker image, so use the instructions appropriate to the operating system and deployment environment rather than assuming one setup applies everywhere.

Capture a Symfony application under test
If the site is the Symfony application being tested, use Panther’s PantherTestCase flow rather than treating the target as an unrelated external URL. Symfony documents that this flow starts the application using its built-in PHP web server and makes it available to Panther. That gives the browser a running application to visit during an end-to-end test.
For an external website, the simple client example is sufficient: request the public URL and save the browser page. For an application under test, follow the current Symfony end-to-end testing guide for the test setup and lifecycle. This distinction matters because a browser cannot screenshot an application that has not been started or made reachable.

Choose Panther when you need a real rendered page
Symfony has more than one testing path, but they do not produce the same result. Panther controls Chrome or Firefox and supports JavaScript execution and screenshot capture. A BrowserKit-based client simulates requests and interactions without acting as a full browser.
| Approach | Best suited to | Screenshot and rendering capability | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Panther native browser client | End-to-end checks and captures that need a browser-rendered page | Supports screenshots and JavaScript through Chrome or Firefox | Requires a real browser and matching WebDriver driver |
| BrowserKit-based client | Faster simulated requests, links, and forms | Does not provide screenshot capture or real-browser JavaScript and CSS rendering | Not a substitute when the output must be an image of a rendered browser page |
Symfony describes end-to-end tests as simulating how real users interact with an application through a browser. If the point is to inspect the appearance after frontend code runs, use Panther. If the point is only to test request-level behavior, a BrowserKit-based approach can be faster and avoid browser-driver setup. See Symfony’s testing guide and BrowserKit documentation for those different roles.

For Firefox, the guide shows setting the window dimensions through WebDriver. Consult its current example for the relevant API and browser setup. A viewport-sized screenshot is useful when you want a specific visible browser area; changing the window to a tall size may show more vertical content, but the documented window-size examples are not a guarantee that the browser will automatically capture the entire page.
Do not confuse a tall viewport with documented full-page capture
The Symfony guide reviewed here documents screenshots and browser window sizing, but does not document an automatic full-page screenshot API. A community workaround discussed resizing the window based on document.documentElement.scrollWidth and scrollHeight before capturing. That is not a documented Panther guarantee, and the community discussion itself notes uncertainty about whether it always works.
If a deliverable must include every section of a long page, verify the exact browser-and-driver behavior you intend to rely on and test the resulting image against pages with different layouts. Do not describe a window-size option alone as a reliable full-page solution.

Run Panther headlessly in CI, and debug visibly when needed
Panther can run a real browser headlessly, which is useful where no desktop display is available, such as a CI job. If you need to watch the browser while diagnosing a failure, Symfony documents PANTHER_NO_HEADLESS for displaying it during debugging. That is a debugging setting, not a requirement for ordinary captures.
Symfony’s container guidance discusses PANTHER_NO_SANDBOX, which disables Chrome’s sandbox. Treat it as a container-specific configuration detail, not a default flag to add to every run. Only use it when the container setup calls for it and you understand the security implications of disabling the browser sandbox.
Troubleshoot common capture failures
Panther cannot start the browser or connect to WebDriver
- Likely cause: Chrome or Firefox, or the matching WebDriver driver, is missing or not discoverable in the environment running the script.
- Fix: Install the browser and driver there, then make the driver available on
PATHor in the project’sdrivers/directory, or use the installer or package-manager route documented by Symfony. Confirm that the browser and driver versions work together.
The capture works locally but fails in CI
- Likely cause: The CI runner has a different operating system, browser setup, driver availability, or display environment than the workstation.
- Fix: Configure browser and driver availability on the runner itself and use headless execution where appropriate. For interactive diagnosis, Symfony documents
PANTHER_NO_HEADLESSto display the browser when the environment permits it.
The file exists but the page looks incomplete
- Likely cause: The browser window is too small for the intended viewport, the page has not reached the state you meant to capture, or the requested result is full-page rather than viewport-sized.
- Fix: Set and verify the browser dimensions, inspect the screenshot as an actual image, and test the target page’s rendering behavior. Panther’s documented window-size examples do not by themselves establish automatic full-page capture.
The screenshot is not the JavaScript-rendered page you expected
- Likely cause: The implementation uses a simulated BrowserKit-based client rather than Panther’s real browser client.
- Fix: Use Panther with Chrome or Firefox when JavaScript execution and browser rendering are part of the required output. Use BrowserKit when simulated requests are the goal, not visual capture.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need an image rather than a browser-driven test, ScreenshotNeo offers a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Its clean-shot steps can accept cookie or consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, with response headers identifying the page verdict and billing status. AI agents can use its MCP server tools: take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf.
Here is the cURL version; replace the URL with the page you want to capture. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for the API parameters and response details:

Options for more than a basic page capture
Panther is the relevant choice when you need the real-browser behavior described above. For captures beyond that basic workflow, ScreenshotNeo documents options that can be useful without writing and maintaining a browser-and-driver setup for every capture:
- Page scope and output: full-page capture with lazy images loaded, a single element selected by CSS selector, PNG/JPEG/WebP image output, PDF paper size, margins, landscape orientation, and page ranges.
- Viewport and appearance: 12 device presets, custom viewport sizes, retina scale, dark mode, transparent backgrounds, and image resizing.
- Page preparation: custom CSS and JavaScript, clicking an element before capture, hiding selectors, and waiting for a selector, a delay, or network idle.
- Request control: block ads, trackers, requests, or resource types; set headers, cookies, user agent, Authorization, timezone, or geolocation.
- Automation and reuse: caching with a chosen TTL, signed links for public
<img>tags, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API, and an OpenAPI specification. - Other inputs: HTML/CSS-to-image capture and parameter names also used by other screenshot APIs, which can make switching easier.
ScreenshotNeo’s plans include all features. Monthly prices are $5 for Starter (3,000 shots), $15 for Growth (15,000), $39 for Pro (60,000), $99 for Scale (250,000), and $249 for Business (1,000,000); yearly billing gives two months free. Free includes 1,000 shots per month with no card. These are product plan allowances, not a benchmark of how quickly any target page will render.
