To screenshot a protected page with Puppeteer, authenticate using the method the site actually uses, wait for a site-specific sign-in signal, then capture the page or an element. A normal HTML login form, an existing session cookie, and HTTP authentication require different code; there is no universal login selector or success condition.
The examples below use Puppeteer’s documentation version 25.12.0 as the reference. Check the API against the Puppeteer version installed in your project, because documentation versions can differ.

Set up a Puppeteer page and capture the protected URL
Install Puppeteer in your project if it is not already installed, then use its installed package to launch a browser. Replace the example URLs, selectors, and credentials with values for a site and account you are authorized to access. Store credentials in environment variables or another secure configuration source, not in committed source code.
This CommonJS example shows the overall flow for an ordinary HTML login form. The selectors and the authenticated marker are deliberately site-specific placeholders: inspect the target site and replace them before running the script.

})();The navigation wait and click are started together because Puppeteer warns that registering the wait after the click can miss a fast navigation. The wait can resolve with a response or null; the site-specific marker is the more useful confirmation that authenticated content is actually present. Puppeteer’s waitForNavigation reference describes navigation behavior, including History API URL changes.
For a single-page application, the form may update the page without a document navigation. In that case, wait for the known signed-in control or app state instead of requiring waitForNavigation(). After login, either navigate to the protected URL or verify that the login flow already redirected there. Check the final URL and a marker that belongs to the protected page before saving the image.

Choose the authentication method the site uses
Standard HTML login form
Fill the site’s actual username and password controls, submit the form, and wait for a site-specific success signal. A site may add multifactor authentication, CAPTCHA, redirects, or other steps; the example does not bypass them. Implement the flow the site permits and handle additional steps according to its requirements.

Existing session cookie
If you already have a valid session cookie for an account you are authorized to use, set it in the browser context before opening the protected page. Use the cookie data the site requires, including its applicable domain and security or expiry attributes. Never publish a real session-cookie value: it can function like a credential.

Puppeteer’s cookie guide covers cookie management; current guidance favors browser- or context-level methods. Browser.setCookie() sets cookies in the default browser context, while BrowserContext.setCookie() targets a chosen context. Consult the Browser.setCookie reference and CookieData fields for your installed version. Page-level cookie methods are deprecated in the current Page API; use Browser or BrowserContext methods instead. See the Page class reference.

HTTP authentication
For a site protected by HTTP authentication rather than an HTML sign-in form, configure credentials before navigation:

Wait for authentication and page readiness
A completed document navigation does not prove that the browser is signed in or that protected content has rendered. Choose a reliable condition from the target application and wait for it before capture:
- A visible account menu, sign-out control, or other signed-in-only element.
- A protected page heading or component that appears only after authentication.
- An application state or route that the site documents as the successful destination.
Do not treat an arbitrary delay as proof of authentication. A delay may be useful when the site has known rendering behavior, but pair it with a meaningful state check. For sites with client-side routing, History API URL changes count as navigation to Puppeteer; still wait for the protected content marker you need. The navigation reference explains this behavior.

Screenshot options support a file path and image type; PNG is the default. Quality is a value from 0 to 100 for formats where it applies, and it does not apply to PNG. Refer to the Puppeteer screenshots guide and ScreenshotOptions reference for available options in your installed version.

Troubleshoot failed or incorrect captures
- The image shows the sign-in page: Check the final URL and wait for a signed-in-only marker or protected content before capturing. The login may have failed, redirected elsewhere, or required an additional step.
- The click sometimes misses navigation: Start
waitForNavigation()and the click together withPromise.all(). If the app uses client-side routing, wait for the relevant content state as well. - A cookie has no effect: Confirm it is valid and unexpired, and that its domain and attributes match the target site. Puppeteer can set cookie data; it cannot make an invalid session valid.
- The URL changes but the page is not ready: A History API change counts as navigation, but the app may still be rendering. Wait for the protected heading or other target-specific marker.
- You only need one component: Use an element screenshot after waiting for that element, rather than capturing the full document.
- Options or output differ from an example: Check the documentation for the Puppeteer package version installed in your project; current docs identify version 25.12.0 for the materials used here, and other references may display different versions.
