The quickest way to screenshot part of a page in Windows 10 or 11 is Windows + Shift + S. Choose rectangular, window, full-screen, or freeform snip, select what you need, then open the notification in Snipping Tool to annotate, extract text, save, or share it. For a whole visible screen, press Print Screen (often labeled PrtSc or PrtScn) and paste the clipboard image into an editor or document.
Choose the capture method that matches your target
| What you need | Best method | Result |
|---|---|---|
| A rectangle or irregular area | Windows + Shift + S | Image copied to the clipboard and opened through Snipping Tool |
| One application window | Snipping Tool > Window | Only the selected window is captured |
| The entire display | Snipping Tool > Full screen, or Print Screen | Full visible screen image |
| An irregular shape | Snipping Tool > Freeform | Capture follows the outline you draw |
| A menu or tooltip that disappears | Snipping Tool > Delay (1–5 seconds) | Delayed still image |
| A short demonstration | Windows + Shift + R | MP4 recording saved under VideosScreen Recordings by default |
These tools capture what Windows displays. They do not automatically create a scrolling image of content below a browser’s visible viewport. A browser-specific full-page capture requires a separate browser feature or service.
How to capture a selected area
- Display the page and content you want to capture.
- Press Windows + Shift + S. The screen dims and the Snipping Tool overlay appears.
- Choose Rectangular, Window, Full-screen, or Freeform mode from the overlay.
- Drag around the target, click the target window, or draw the freeform outline.
- Click the notification that appears, or open Snipping Tool, to edit and save the snip.
The initial capture is placed on the clipboard, so you can immediately paste it with Ctrl + V into Paint, an email, a document, or another image-capable application. Opening it in Snipping Tool gives you markup, cropping, text extraction, and sharing controls.
Rectangular snip
Rectangular mode is the dependable choice for a paragraph, image, dialog, or section of a web page. Drag from one corner to the opposite corner. Keep the browser zoom and display scaling in mind: the screenshot records pixels as rendered, not the page’s underlying text or layout.

Freeform snip
Choose Freeform when a rectangle would include unrelated material. Draw around the object with the pointer or touchscreen. The area outside your outline is excluded from the snip.
Capture one window or the whole screen
One application window
- Open Snipping Tool from the Start menu.
- Set the capture mode to Window.
- Choose New.
- Click the window you want, such as a browser, dialog box, or settings panel.
Window mode is useful when the window is not maximized because it avoids manually trimming the desktop around it.
Full-screen capture
In Snipping Tool, choose Full screen, then start a new snip. Windows captures the entire display visible to it. If you use multiple monitors, verify which display or arrangement the tool includes before sharing sensitive content.
Print Screen and paste
Press Print Screen to place a static image of the entire screen on the clipboard. Open Paint or another editor, press Ctrl + V, and use Save as to choose a filename, format, and folder. On some keyboards the key is behind an Fn layer; the Windows+Shift+S shortcut avoids that hardware dependency.

Windows can also be configured so pressing Print Screen opens screen snipping. Go to Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard and change the Print Screen setting. The exact wording can vary slightly between Windows updates.
Capture a menu, tooltip, or other temporary state
- Open Snipping Tool.
- Choose Delay and select 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 seconds.
- Select the snip mode and click New.
- During the countdown, open the menu, tooltip, or context menu.
- When the screen dims, select the target area or window.
Delay is more reliable than trying to press a shortcut while holding a menu open. If the menu closes before capture, increase the delay, reopen it later in the countdown, and keep the pointer away from the item that dismisses it.
Edit, extract, save, and share the screenshot
After capture, Snipping Tool provides common finishing tools:
- Pen and highlighter: mark an error, button, or area that needs attention.
- Shapes and eraser: add callouts or remove marks.
- Crop: trim borders and unrelated screen content.
- Text extraction: copy recognizable text from the image when retyping is inconvenient. Check the result manually, especially for small fonts, unusual characters, or low contrast.
- Undo and redo: reverse or restore edits.
- Share: send the finished image through an available Windows sharing option.
Microsoft says captured snips are automatically saved to the Screenshots folder by default. In Snipping Tool settings you can change automatic-save behavior or the folder. Use Save as when you need a second copy with a specific name or location; saving manually does not depend on the automatic-save setting.

Record a short screen video
For motion that a still image cannot explain, press Windows + Shift + R. Select a rectangular region, choose Start, perform the action, and choose Stop in the overlay. The recording is saved as an MP4 in VideosScreen Recordings by default. This is a recording workflow, not a still screenshot; use Snipping Tool’s image modes when you need a single frame for documentation.
Where Windows screenshots are stored
Clipboard captures
Print Screen and Windows + Shift + S initially place the image on the clipboard. Paste it before copying another item, or the clipboard image may be replaced. Clipboard history can be opened with Windows + V if enabled, but it should not be treated as permanent file storage.
Automatically saved snips
Snipping Tool’s default automatic location is the Screenshots folder. Open Snipping Tool settings to see or change the folder and automatic-save behavior. If you cannot find a file, use the app’s Save as command immediately after capture and note the chosen path.
Screen recordings
Short recordings made with Windows + Shift + R go to VideosScreen Recordings by default and use MP4 format.

Common problems and fixes
The shortcut does nothing
- Try Windows + Shift + S rather than relying on a physical Print Screen key.
- On a laptop, try the manufacturer’s Fn modifier only for Print Screen; Windows+Shift+S does not require it.
- Open Snipping Tool from Start and use New to determine whether the app itself works.
The screenshot was copied but not saved
Clipboard capture is expected behavior. Click the Snipping Tool notification, then choose Save or Save as. Alternatively paste into Paint and save from there.
The wrong window was captured
Window mode captures the window you click after starting a new snip. Close overlapping menus, bring the intended app to the foreground, and click its title area rather than another window.
A menu disappeared
Use a 1–5 second delay. Start the snip first, then open the menu during the countdown. Increase the delay if the interface takes longer to appear.
The result includes private information
Before sharing, inspect the entire image for addresses, account identifiers, notifications, tabs, and other monitors. Crop or cover sensitive material with Snipping Tool’s editing tools; do not assume a cropped-looking display has removed data unless you saved the edited copy.

The page is longer than the screen
Windows Snipping Tool captures the visible screen, window, or selected region. It does not document an automatic scrolling webpage screenshot. Capture several sections, use the browser’s own full-page feature if available, or use an external capture service.
Or skip the browser setup
For a reproducible page image, ScreenshotNeo accepts one GET request and returns PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. It removes cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing result. Its MCP server includes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for all options.

- Use delay for transient menus and tooltips.
- Use Save as when the file path, format, or filename matters.
- Use an automated service when you need repeatable captures, full-page rendering, PDFs, custom waits, headers, cookies, device settings, or an API workflow.
