Open the conversation, show the message you need, and use your device’s screenshot shortcut. On an iPhone with Face ID, quickly press and release Side + Volume Up. On most Android phones, press Power + Volume Down. The image is normally saved in Photos or Gallery in a Screenshots collection or album.
The exact buttons, preview controls, scrolling capture, storage location, and whether an app permits screenshots depend on the phone model, operating-system version, and messaging app. The steps below cover the common paths and what to do when they do not work.
Before you capture the message
- Open the messaging app and the specific conversation.
- Scroll until the sender, date or time, and message text you need are visible. Include enough surrounding context that the image will make sense later.
- Dismiss keyboards, menus, notification banners, and other overlays that could cover the message.
- If the conversation contains sensitive information, decide in advance what must be cropped or hidden before sharing.
A screenshot records what is on the display at that moment. It does not automatically preserve messages that have been deleted, expired, or loaded only after you scroll.
How to screenshot a message on an iPhone
iPhone models with Face ID
- Display the part of the conversation you want to save.
- Quickly press and release the Side button and Volume Up button at the same time.
- Use the on-screen controls to crop, draw, add text, share, or save the capture.
On current iOS 26, Apple’s support guidance says quick tools appear automatically. On iOS 18 and earlier, a temporary thumbnail commonly appears instead. The controls and timing can therefore look different after an iOS update.

iPhone with Touch ID and a Side button
Press and release Side + Home together. Do not hold the buttons; holding them can open shutdown or other system controls instead of taking a screenshot.
iPhone with Touch ID and a Top button
Press and release Top + Home together. This layout is found on older iPhone models and some iPads.
Edit and find the file
Tap the preview or open the screenshot editor to crop unrelated parts, mark the message, or share it. To locate the saved image, open Photos and go to Collections > Media Types > Screenshots. Cropping is useful for removing private notifications or other people’s details, but it does not by itself establish that an image is legally sufficient evidence.
How to screenshot a message on Android
Most Android phones
- Open the conversation and place the message on screen.
- Press Power + Volume Down simultaneously, then release.
- Tap the preview to edit, crop, annotate, or share, if your phone provides those controls.
If the shortcut fails, press and hold the Power button for a few seconds and tap Screenshot. Google recommends consulting the phone maker’s instructions when neither method is available, because button behavior varies by manufacturer, model, software version, and carrier.

Google Pixel alternatives
On a Pixel, open the app overview (the screen showing recent apps) and choose Screenshot for the visible app. Google also documents a voice-command option on supported Pixel software. The wording and availability can change with navigation mode and Android updates.

Where Android saves the image
On current Android versions, open Photos > Collections > On this device > Screenshots. Some older phones use Gallery > Albums > Screenshots. If you cannot find it, search the Photos or Gallery app for “Screenshots” and check that the capture completed rather than being only a preview.
Capture a long message thread
A normal screenshot saves only the visible screen. Android 12 and newer can offer Capture more after a screenshot on most screens that support scrolling:
- Take a normal screenshot.
- Tap Capture more (the label may vary).
- Adjust the selected range and save.
This is not universal. A messaging app can disable scrolling capture, and a view that does not scroll as one continuous page cannot be extended. iPhone screenshot controls do not provide a universal full-conversation capture for every chat app; use the app’s own export or sharing feature when available, or take several clearly ordered screenshots.
Why a screenshot may be blocked or visible to someone else
App restrictions
Some apps and conversation modes block screenshots for privacy or security. Samsung notes that protected screens may prevent capture, and the same behavior can occur in other Android apps. A black image, warning message, or missing Screenshot option can indicate an intentional restriction rather than a broken button.
Screenshot notifications
Do not assume screenshots are always invisible. Some apps can notify the other participant or otherwise reveal that a capture occurred, while others do neither. The available guidance does not establish one rule for every messaging app, device, conversation mode, or software release. If notification behavior matters, check the app’s current help page for that exact feature before capturing.

When safety is a concern
If capturing could alert or endanger someone, Australia’s eSafety Commissioner suggests considering a photo of the display with another device. That is a situational alternative, not a requirement for ordinary messages. Consider your personal safety and seek appropriate local support in a safety-sensitive situation.

Prepare a screenshot before sharing
- Crop deliberately: remove unrelated notifications, contact names, phone numbers, and other conversations while leaving enough context to identify what the image shows.
- Keep the original: save an untouched copy before annotating or cropping if the image may be needed later.
- Check readability: zoom the saved file and make sure names, timestamps, attachments, and punctuation are legible.
- Remove hidden assumptions: if several screenshots form one thread, number them or include overlapping lines so their order is clear.
- Share securely: use a private channel and check the recipient list before sending.
Troubleshooting common failures
Nothing happens when you press the buttons
Press and release both buttons at exactly the same time; do not hold them. Remove a tight case temporarily, try the operating-system menu fallback, and confirm that the buttons themselves work. On Android, use Power then Screenshot and follow the manufacturer’s model-specific instructions.

Holding a button too long can open shutdown, accessibility, or voice controls. Use a quick simultaneous press. On iPhone, verify whether your model has Face ID, a Home button with a Side button, or a Home button with a Top button; the pair is different for each layout.
The image is black, blank, or refused
The app may be protecting sensitive content. Test the shortcut on a normal, non-protected screen. If ordinary screens work but the conversation does not, the restriction is likely intentional; use an official export or sharing function if the app offers one.
The screenshot is missing
Wait for the capture animation to finish, then check the Screenshots collection or album rather than the main photo timeline. Confirm that you saved the preview. On Android, check both Photos and the manufacturer’s Gallery app; on iPhone, check Photos’ Screenshots media type.

Capture more is unavailable
The phone may run an Android version earlier than 12, or the message view may not support scrolling capture. Update only if appropriate for your device, try the app’s export option, or take a sequence of ordinary screenshots with overlapping context.

Can I screenshot a disappearing message?
Only if the app allows capture while it is visible. Expiring-message rules and screenshot alerts are controlled by the app, not by the phone’s standard shortcut.
Does taking a screenshot prove when a message was sent?
A screenshot can show a timestamp displayed by the app, but it is an image of the interface, not an independent verification of the message’s origin or history. Preserve the original conversation and any available export when accuracy matters.
