On Kali Linux’s documented Xfce desktop, press the Print Screen key. When screenshooter opens, press Enter to take the screenshot. You can also open the quick-launch panel’s Screen-Recorder icon and choose Screenshot. These instructions come from Kali’s Xfce FAQ, so the exact shortcut can differ if you use GNOME or another desktop environment.
Take a screenshot in Kali Xfce
Keyboard method
- Press the keyboard’s Print Screen key.
- Wait for screenshooter to launch.
- Press Enter. Kali’s documented Xfce workflow uses Enter to take the screenshot.
The official FAQ describes this sequence directly: “Press the Print Screen key on your keyboard will launch screenshooter. Pressing enter will take the screenshot.” The FAQ was updated on June 16, 2025; see Kali Linux Xfce FAQ.
Panel method
- Find the Screen-Recorder icon at the far right of the quick-launch panel, next to the application menu.
- Open the icon’s menu.
- Choose Screenshot, not the recording option.
This route is useful when your keyboard has no Print Screen key or when a custom keyboard mapping has changed what the key does. You do not normally need to buy hardware; a USB keyboard with that key is only a conditional fallback.
Do not confuse a still image with recording
Ctrl + Print Screen is documented for launching the screen recorder. Pressing Enter after that starts recording. For a still screenshot, use plain Print Screen or select Screenshot from the panel icon.

Check your desktop environment before using the shortcut
The shortcut above is specifically documented for Kali’s Xfce desktop. Kali publishes packages for more than one desktop environment, including Xfce and GNOME, and their screenshot controls are not guaranteed to match. The Kali Linux Metapackages documentation lists these desktop choices.
If you installed or selected a desktop other than Xfce, treat the Xfce sequence as a scope-limited instruction rather than a universal Kali rule. Look for that desktop’s screenshot control or its panel launcher. A customized keyboard mapping can also alter the behavior of Print Screen even when Xfce is installed.
A practical decision path
- You are on the documented Xfce desktop: press Print Screen, then Enter.
- The key does not launch screenshooter: use the panel’s Screen-Recorder icon and select Screenshot.
- You need a video instead: use Ctrl + Print Screen, then Enter to start recording.
- You are on another desktop: do not assume the Xfce shortcut applies; use that desktop’s screenshot controls.
- Your keyboard lacks Print Screen: use the panel route first. A replacement USB keyboard is optional, not a requirement established by Kali’s instructions.
Troubleshooting Kali’s screenshot controls
Nothing opens after pressing Print Screen
First check whether you are actually using Xfce. The published shortcut is an Xfce FAQ instruction, not a promise for every Kali desktop. If you are on Xfce, a customized keyboard mapping may have reassigned the key. Use the quick-launch panel’s Screen-Recorder icon and choose Screenshot instead.
The recorder appears when you wanted a still image
That normally means the recording command was selected. Ctrl + Print Screen is the documented recording shortcut. Close or stop that flow and start again with plain Print Screen, or select Screenshot from the panel icon.

You cannot find a Print Screen key
The panel icon provides a software-only alternative. Open the icon beside the application menu and choose Screenshot. Buying a keyboard with a dedicated key is a hardware fallback, not a prerequisite for the panel method.
The instructions do not match your desktop
Kali supports multiple desktop environments. Because the source instruction is for Xfce, a different desktop may expose a different launcher or shortcut. Use the controls supplied by that desktop rather than repeatedly trying the Xfce sequence.
You are unsure whether the action is a capture or a recording
The menu labels are the deciding clue: choose Screenshot for a still image and the recording option for video. Kali’s documented distinction is also reflected in the two shortcuts: Print Screen for screenshooter, Ctrl + Print Screen for screen recording.
